Damn, you were sent the wrong carbon brush assembly. You have an older style motor. The newer ones have a bearing in the rear cover. You can either send it back, or sell it to someone who needs it - but you'll need a different assembly to work with your motor I'm afraid.

It goes on top of the piston... Remove the screw, swap the intake valve and replace the screw. Use some blue loctite on the screw thread. You may want to shape the intake valve slightly if it does not lay completely flat against the top of the piston.

Your the man Lance! Im sending a PM to you right now. Is there anyway I can tell if my comps are the older style or new? I got these rebuild kits for 2 450's and want to make sure they work ok. I know the leader hoses are good (1/4" NPT) but will the intake valve rebuilt parts I bought work? The part number is RK199. Says its good for 450C/450H,460C.

If you have a bearing on the tail shaft of the motor, then it is an "older" style 450C. Newer style 450Cs have them in the rear cover. The intake valves and leader hoses are transferable, so no worries there.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Bro-ham, do a continuity test on those commutators before you take another step. They're awfully rusty, and you may have some problems going on with the motor... Would hate to see you spend time on something that may be wasted or nearly wasted.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Also, if you feel comfortable with it, you can remove the tail shaft bearings and just use the newer style rear cover. Can you get a photo of it so I can check to be sure which side the armature bolts load from?

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

I was thinking the same thing too bro. Is their anyway I can take the casing out with the magnet and brush the case off of all the rust with a wirewheel or anything? What ohm reading should I get between the 2 commutator ends? .2 ohms? Thanks for the help man!

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

I'm glad I came across this thread, i've been having issues with my 380's latly.

They started blowing fuses last summer, I wired in multiple different style fuses to no avail. Eventually I replaced all the wiring that even involved the compressors, found a couple burnt spots and figured all my problems were solved... Untill about a week ago they started blowing the fuse again. It's a 40-amp blade style fuse with all new heavy gauge (8) wiring.

So i'm starting to think my 4 or 5 year old 380's are crapping out on me and pulling way to many amps. I haven't had a chance to take them apart yet and see what the winding's look like yet, but does that sound like where my problem might be?

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

If you read anything, you are good. You're just looking for continuity.

If you have the rear cover off - just pull the motor housing clear of the motor. There's nothing else holding it in place besides the magnets. Be careful not to slam your fingers when you put it back together.... that can suck large.

Have you looked at the leader hose? If the check valve is slightly stuck it may cause the spike of amperage on intial start up. Maybe Lance can help ya out!

Gently wire brush the commutator and external surfaces of the motor in photo #1. #2 looks as clean as its going to get. If you rebuild, you need a new O-ring kit for the pump, or you need to remote mount your air filter. Too much moisture is getting into the motor compartment.

I'll bet that the cylinder walls are scratched and that your piston seals are failing, albeit slowly. Do a tear down and inspect them. If they still run, they can usually be rebuilt.

They still run fantastic, and I beat the hell out of them. 2 380's on a 12 gallon tank that runs 180 psi.

I was assuming the problem was going to be in the windings, i'll have to take them off the truck and tear into em and see what's wrong.

I'll gladly send you O-rings bro.
Have you pulled the bearings off the end of the motor shafts yet?
If you can do this, you should be able to use the new carbon brush assemblies without a replacement. (IE - its the same thing).

Nah man I havent yet. I will take them over to my buddies shop this weekend to try and get them off. Dont wanna mess them up trying to get them out. He has all the tools over there to help me out.

When im checking for continuity on the commutator...should I be putting one lead on the commutator and the other to ground? Confused on where exactly to check for a reading.

No, continuity is checking for continuous electrical conductivity. Touching a power and a ground would not show continuity. Touch a section of the commutator with one probe and a section right next to it with the other. You should see continuity all the way around the commutator.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Wow haven't been on here in a while,
but this is a pleasant surprise to read about Viair.
Not sure when Lance became part of Viair, but sure wish
he was around back in 01 when I was having issues with some 550C's
on my buddy's dime, and all they did was give me the run around.
The guy I had to deal with was a tool, and refused to take a compressor
back that fried literally out of box, and never fixed the situation after
sending the unit multiple times.
Enough ranting, it's good to hear guys like Lance are bringing a good name
back to the company.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

All I can say is, I try. Working with a good company is the biggest hurdle.
VIAIR has always been a good company, that produces a quality product. This is why I stuck with them when the owner first came to introduce his product to me when I was the Editor of Mini Truckin'.
I saw a quality product back in the day, and an owner of a company (VIAIR) that saw the air suspension market as the ultimate proving grounds for 12-volt compressors. Now, some 10 years later, VIAIR is the first choice for air suspension air source, bar none.
As far as customer service, there is a reason that you go to an air suspension parts distributor to buy your parts for your builds. Why? -Because that distributor hopefully knows what you need when you do not. Back in the day, VIAIR customer service may not have fully understood your needs. Fast forward to today... I know exactly what you need, and how to help you get the most out of your hard-earned dollars spent with VIAIR. I understand that times are tough, and this company respects your decision to buy and use VIAIR products so much, that I have the ability to help anyone anytime I see a need. I attribute the level of VIAIR customer service to the owner of VIAIR who has given me the freedom to serve our valued customers.

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

thanks for the quick update on the tracking info lance, cant wait to see two pretty chrome 480s sitting where my dingy old 450s were. Should be a whole lot faster too, and i cant wait to put that 200 psi pressure switch in!! running 145psi on a 5gallon tank is super lame. Lance you are the best!!!!!

Lance got an issue bro. I think the brush end block you sent me was the wrong one (Or I am retarded LOL). The ones on my 450 have 2 holes on the ends to allow a long threaded bolt to go into. The one you sent me does not have them. All it has are the 4 corner allen head screw slots. Any help bro?

The newer style carbon brush assemblies bolt together reverse. As in, the bolts that hold the rear cover on, load from the front of the compressor. Do you have holes in the front motor cover to load the bolts? If not, I'll have to send you a different carbon brush assembly, and have you send the freebie back.

At first glance, I'd say you need to replace:

Cylinder Wall - (P/N RP091))
Saddle Plate - (P/N RP022)
Piston Assembly (older style - P/N RK160)

If the head was put on incorrectly, you're lucky that the output shaft didn't snap off. Before you spend any more money on the compressor - remove the piston assembly and check the output shaft to be sure is straight/true. If it is bent AT ALL, do not use this compressor. It will eat any parts you replace very quickly and is only a matter of time before the output shaft fails.

If the head is stripped, you will have no choice but to drill it out - all the way down to the output shaft. Be sure to use a cutting oil on your drill bit to keep from killing the bit.

The set screw is loctited in place, so we usually advise the use of heat to weaken the loctite before you try to remove the set screw. Did you use a 3 mm Allen wrench? (I believe that's the size needed for the set screw).

No...both the bolts load up from the end block to the front of the compressor. Damn...so I need to send this one back to you then?

Re: Viair Is Awesome!!!

Dude Viair and Lance both suck!

JP Lance

Really tho now that I'm thinking back I have gotten the best customer service from Lance since I started working on my truck. I'm still amazed at those little 450s on my 5gal. They are little troopers.

Just to check, I had to get creative with my air filter on my passenger side, think any issue will arise?
