Depending on the size/scale model you're doing, the smooth round pencils make an excellent tube chassis. Do mitre cuts and since they're not hollow (like ink pen housings) they will glue solid as hell. Then you can use the round plastic "parts frame" from a regular plastic model for bridge bars, link bars,etc.
