[Project] Bodydropped 95 S-10
Heres the next project in the shop, the rework of the 'Draggin Daddy' feature truck. Many people may remember this truck under that name, but it has since been sold by Dennis to my buddy Brian, and its in die need of some changes. Ill be reworking all of the suspension to something more fit of a feature truck, as well as some body mods and a tune up of other components.

Here is the current setup. It used to be all covered up with tweed and carpeted panels, for good reason. Its just bare bones air over axle suspension with monoleafs, stacked 1" and 4" blocks, 255C bags, and some 2x2 box tubing with some flat stock and angle iron thrown into the mix. The original compressor died so that monster Blowjax 550 comp was put to work. The valves are haphazardly sitting over a hole int he bed floor.

Heres what it looks like after a short session with cutting pliers. The tank was half bolted half welded to the floor and some wires and tubing ran under a piece of fiberboard to feed the rear setup.

This is what came out from the bulkhead, a piece of fiberboard for the comp to sit on, a tweeded panel and a piece of 1 x 4 wood with bent nails sticking out of it? Strange place to hind some lumber..

Dont do this, securing the valve wiring to the bag bolt isnt the best way to ground anything and it certainly doesnt look nice.

Heres where everything ran thru the bed floor..not good. Nothing is protected and the edges are quite jagged. you can see the green wire has been involved in a short, its bare wire most of the way and whatever insulation is left is melted and scorched..We also had a problem with a gauge line feed being cut here and had to run a new one.

Heres the valve setup, its about the same for front and back. Theres about 15 extra fittings in here and its no wonder the truck couldnt hold air for more than 3 hours. Most everything is Home Depot brand and to run the gauges they used a bunch of compression and PTC fittings to get the job done. Not to mention the adaptors at almost every connection.

I went under to remove the taillight wiring and I found a huge nest of wires all taped together and a large assembly of butt connectors..This is getting changed anyway so it was all cut out.

Another prime example of a "show" truck...lol...some pretty paint and a tonneau cover hide alot. Looks like you've got a nice little project on your hands. Fixing somebody else's mess is never fun. I can't wait to see the end result though...should be sweet...

Damn I thought Dave was doing a body drop, I was like hell yeah.
Why is it that all of these bad ass "show" trucks that I have seen a long time ago turn out to be like that, seems like show trucks have no practocality to them, thats why I do my own work to my daily driver. |

Uh I am not bodydropping it or redoing that work, I am redoing the suspension since it is shit. I just titled the thread liek this because I couldnt think of a better name, but I guess Ill change it.
Got some pics of the carnage up! Here is the custom structural support beam that was welded in ever so carefully..Dont try to adjust your screen, yes its THAT crooked. |

From the side...you can notice here that they couldnt even find a piece long enough so they welded a short section onto the longest piece they had..It kinda has a small arc in it now from the welding I suppose..

Shot of the suspension setup..This is great, some real artistry. Heres the list of componets from left to right..
- 1/4" plate steel for homemade notch - 2x2" box tubing - 2" angle iron - 1/4" plate steel - 2" angle iron - 2" round tubing |

Inside of notch..of course the pieces they cut didnt meet the edge of the metal so a couple beads of weld fills the gap right in there..mmmm..
You can see the amount of crap thats welded into this frame and I may just cut the rails right off and backhalf the truck. |

This is something I cant quite understand yet...Everything that is going from the rear to the front of the truck is run thru the cab..like thats a better idea than just running along the frame rails. It totally sucks and not only do the holes look like they were made with an airchisel, the wires and line that run inside are all glued down under the tweed..I dunno wtf they were thinking but here you can see the 3/8" feed for the front valves is going into the back cab wall..

Pass side..heres the 2ga wiring for the battery (!!) runnign thru the cab wall..The melted white wire with yellow butt connector was the feed for the switches..

Heres were everythign accumulated in the front of the cab...you can see this great job they did of extending the battery. They just bolted 2 wires together and called it a day. Not only that but they used the bolt as a splice point for about 5 other curcuits they had goin on..All this was just wrapped in a mass of black tape. You can also see the 3/8 feed line coming out..

This truck has no a/c so instead of making some sort of nice cover or smoothing the firewall out the shop took a piece of 3/16" fiberboard, bolted it to the cab, then spray bombed everything black. This is it off the cab with the painted side down..

Work like that gives shops a bad name. That is the work you get when you save yourself a couple hundred bucks. Always check out the shop and there work, Ask for refrences and such. It's your truck, your money and your life make sure it's done right!

It's kinda sad that it's come down to this...as long as it looks good from about 10 feet away, it'll get magazine coverage. I wish I could count how many total hack jobs I saw at shows this year, but they always drew a crowd because they were bodydropped and tukin big ass wheels. Nobody seemed to care about the reverse 2-link, broken shock mounts, drywall screws holding the body drop on the bed together, the grass poking up through the holes in the cab floor. But dammit, it was tukin lugs....
At any rate, that notch is killer..lol. Between that, the wiring and those bad ass stacked blocks, whoever's been driving that thing is lucky to be alive...You've definately got your work cut out for you on this one, AV... Last edited by low-blazer : 12-06-2003 at 11:27 AM. |

Wow Dave... you sounded kinda flustered on the phone the other day, when telling me about this truck. Now I see why.
Don't worry, as overwhelming as it might look, once you get all the crap out of the way, it will be just like any other job. |

Thanks guys, Ive pretty much decided to hack it off midway thru the gas tank and build 2x3 box tubing the rest of the way back, should be fun and I wont have to deal with that mess of shit.
