[Project] Bagged 98 S10

Ok so this is just another customers truck, his name is s10r0b on here. I bagged the front of it a while ago and dont have any decent pics of it but this one..He has billet 17s on it now and other shit..

Im doing a standard air over axle setup with a bridge kit from Suicidedoors, as well as a forward 4 link with the stock gas tank. Heres a shot of the bridge crap tacked up; Ill prolly change the bars in the future for more clearance..

I made a custom gas tank crossmember that not only raises the gas tank so it doesnt drag, but provides a mounting point for the upper bars AND has dope diamond plate ends

Im using the stock hangers but moved them back on the frame rails so they dont drag and to get the upper and lower bar lengths closer to each other. The problem with most bolt on kits is they have the hangers in the stock location, so the lowers are much longer than the uppers causing significant pinion angle change at the extremes of the travel.

Since the bags are over the axle, there isnt much room for the upper bars to mount to the axle tubes, so I bent this piece of 1.5" steel with a torch to bridge the pumpkin. If this was an import or another truck I can weld to the center section, but the diff housing is cast on s10s and a typical MIG weld will eventually break out and fail. The bridge is a lot safer.

Ill update the pics as I work on it..

Re: [Project] Bagged 98 S10

Looks great Dave. Why are you doing a 255/224 bag instead of an F9000? Is the kid going to hop it a lot or something?

lol..nothin wrong with double convoluted over the axle, its just a basic tried and true setup thats easy to install and holds up well, just doesnt ride the best and doesnt give the best lift..

as for f9000s, heres the one i did last year..

Re: [Project] Bagged 98 S10

Ok couple of pics of what I did tonight...built the lower bars and upper wishbone...oohh look at the sexiness, you love it..

If case youre wondering, I use chains to set the axle at drive height, then jack up the front of the diff to dial in the pinion angle..this method works well for me.

Re: [Project] Bagged 98 S10

I took this pic to show the bars relation to each other. You can see they are almost parallel, which is actually what you dont want, thats why its ALMOST parallel heh.. In this pic the lowers are at 4° and the uppers are at 6° meaning the instant center of the setup is somewhere up front. Actually it doesnt really matter because Im not building a drag car here but its good to know the setup is in good shape...werd

Re: [Project] Bagged 98 S10

no..thats a standard notch size. ya see, when you have a 'bridge kit' the bars and bag mounts are already set at a determined height on the notch. so the notch size isnt in question, you have to find out how high the axle needs to be to lay out on a specific tire, then add half the axle tube to get to the top of it (1.375"), the axle mount (1.5"), and the height of a compressed bag (3"). That measurement is how high the bag mounts need to be in relation from the center of the axle to the frame. You then set the axle mounts (which is the notch in this case) to that height and weld em in. Of course it usually ends up the notch is a couple inches higher than it needs to be but thats fine, only leaves room for bigger wheels in the future heh..

Re: [Project] Bagged 98 S10

Ok people have been asking about the driveshaft tunnel so I took pics of the one I just did. Of course this is just a general overview, youll need to test fit your driveshaft to make sure you clear.

The real problem is the hump underneath the cab, but once thats cut the pinch weld at the back needs to be cut too. Here I cut up as far as possible without cutting into the cabin. Theres quite a few pieces of metal here so you can cut them all out and just leave the fold. Afterwards weld the seam if you need to, or just seam seal it. Also Im satisfied with the cut because it hits the shaft the same time the shaft hits the gas tank crossmember, and I know it doesnt go that high so Im good.

Re: [Project] Bagged 98 S10

Inside I dont need a huge cut, maybe just an inch of clearance underneath, so what I did was cut the floor out then bend it up out of the way, and then continue the cut on the thicker bottom panel so it was gone. You can see the two layers here..

I then straightened the floor panel out, trimmed it down, and bent it back into place. This will leave a gap between so filler pieces will need to be made and welded up. Once finished, just seal the hell out of it and youre done.

A tunnel like this wont even hardly show thru the carpet, and this one is actually an inch higher than the shaft. If you need anything bigger then I suggest cutting the floor out to the back wall and making a replacment tunnel.

Lemme get this straight, your doing this bc of his set up and also b/c he has a reg cab right? ... From what I've read... but havnt confirmed is that you USUALLY don't have to worry about the shaft rubbing if you have an extnd cab?

Right, because ext cabs have 2 part drive shafts, and I think long beds do also...? not sure....
And on the reg cabs it depends partly on your tire size
