Making sure im going in the right direction here

Built my cross member today for my 4link b.o.b just want your opinions and suggestions before I get too far with this (the old black cross member close to the cab will be coming out.) and the old bag mounts will also come out.

Looks good. Just make sure you bevel everything to get the best weld possible. And NO downhill welds! Can't tell you how many of those i see on here.

I saw you didn't miter cut the pieces in another thread. I really would suggest doing that because it is stronger and looks a lot more professional. Rather then some backyard hack who stacks pieces of tube together. Miter cuts are not hard by any means but they do take a little more time.

Also I would make it as tall as possible before it hits the bed floor and throw the driveshaft in to make sure all is good.

whats wrong with downhill? I run down all the time. It's flux core you're supposed to run vertical up. (though, I would guess this is flux by the color around the tacks to the frame)

bevel! If you insist on grinding down welds, I can't stress enough the point of beveling your weld joints.

also, just cosmetic, I suggest some sort of sanding disk to finish out your grinds. There is no getting a stone wheel to look good.

welding downhill does not get great penetration. Sure it looks good but the weld is not thick at all. I would not trust downhill welds on something structural like a frame.

i think with proper technique/heat... you won't have any problem with material >1/4.

I welded up the first pass, cleaned it up, then went down for asthetics.

That welder welds everything we do. Trailer (semi) frames and anything around that. Turn it up and 1" steel is butter

they look fine. just go slow and take your time. if you rush welding, you will see it

I dont rush the welding. heck I aint rushing any of it lol. Iv got about 45 hours in the back half so far. Probably 25 of that was staring at it and moving my hands where parts would be moving to see in my head if anything was going to bind or hit.... lol
