Just got my Mandrel-Bent frame rails-let the games begin!

Well I finally got my mandrel-bent frame rails for my S10 project-I feel like a kid at Xmas! The rear end in an IRS from an RX-7. I am not using the S10 front suspension either, I have ordered a Super-Slam front airbagged set up from Scotts Hot Rods. It is similar to a Mustang II set-up, but WAY better. It is custom built to my specs for track width, will lay out on 20's etc. The biggest advantage is that the upper and lower control arms, as well as the airbag and mount all mount to the crossmember, making it super clean. I hope to have the front suspension stuff within a couple more weeks, it take Scot's 4-6 weeks to build it all. And the truck will have a small block chevy, has a stepside bed and of course will lay body. I'm so excited to get started, I wanna pee my pants hehe. the frame rails as I ordered them are 1 foot too long, and the area where the rear clip will weld to the front clip must be trimmed too. Kind of hard to explain but I'll post new pics as I start to get it all put together, it will be clear to see then. I'll attach a couple pics

Thanks for all the nice words guys. The motor will be an over-cammed gear-drive .030 over 350 cuz Florida has no state inspection . I ordered the rails from Auto-Weld in PA. Real cool guys, built to my spec, and actually didn't mind doing an "out-of-the ordinary" job. I called some other "better-known" companies, and told them what I am building, and that I have all needed measurements, etc, and they all treated my like sh#t and didn't want to mess with it-oh well!!

Re: Just got my Mandrel-Bent frame rails-let the games begin!

Hey guys-thanks for the support! Well I'll get started on this thing within the next couple weeks, after my front suspension stuff gets here. I'm really anxious to get this thing together as a rolling chassis. The frame rails are 2 x 4 x .120, as are most manrel bent rails. They also do 2 x 3, but the 2 x4 will be much stronger for minimal gain in profile. I'll definitely post pics as it goes together. I'm excited to use my new Pro-Tools tubing bender for rear crossmembers, fuel cell crossmembers, etc. Somebody emailed me to ask how the front and rear frame sections will join, I'll post pics when its actually done, for now heres a crude drawing to give you an idea...............

Re: Just got my Mandrel-Bent frame rails-let the games begin!

Hey guys, whats up? I would have no problem recommending Auto Weld, they did a great job. Originally I was going to make my own frame rails, cut the angles, and weld it up. Then I thought about it and with all the $$ I spent for the new IFS set-up, I need to look into mandrel rails. I am so glad I did, these are so much cleaner than angle welded rails. For all rails as you see them they were $1600.00. With the price of steel now I would have had $500 in box tubing, so the extra grand for a much better result is well worth it to me. DimeBag, check the link out dragginbalz left for more info, maybe they are close to you. If anybody is looking to balk half their truck, Auto Weld can custom bend back half rails for about the same price of the steel alone-a typical balk half set of rails(no xmembers) only runs about $400-really a bargain for the end result. Thanks again, I'll keep ya posted as I go

I could remeasure it and send you them within the next couple days. Of course the rear clip dimensions are set up for the RX7 indy rear, which is why they had to kick up that far. And my front kick-up is 6", where stock is about 4.5", and this is because of the Scotts Hot Rods front IFS set-up I am using. I'll put some measurements of it together for you in the next few days. Right now I am building a frame jig, so I don't have it mocked up still, but I hope to have the jig built within the next few days

Re: Just got my Mandrel-Bent frame rails-let the games begin!

Hey guys, whats up? Well I got my frame jig built over the weekend, used 2" x 4" box tubing I got from the metal salvage yard. I got about 75 feet for only $41.00-way cheap. It had light surface rust, but I quickly ground it, Ospho'ed it, and hit it with rustoleum. Then I modified two engine stands I had to do a poor mans rotisserie-crude but effective!. Once my front IFS stuff gets here(hopefully within a week) I can weld up the front rails. Then I can take them off the jig, weld up the rear rails and crossmembers, etc the put the front and rear clips on the jig, and instant(kind of)chassis hehe. The nice thing about the rotisserie is I can spin it so I can always weld in a comfortable position, with no upside-down or out of position welds needed, so the results will be way cleaner, cuz I don't want to grind any welds, I want them to show. Sorry for the book, heres a few pics of the front rails on the jig............
