1980 Chevy C10

OK here is the build up of my 1980 Chevrolet C10 long bed with the 4.1 inline 6 cylinder. I am going to finish my stock floor body-drop after i finish this truck because this will be my hauler. I started off buy Z'ing the frame four inches and modifying the stock lower control arms to fit a Contitech 2800. I moved the transmission tunnel up 4 1/2 inches to clear the transmission. I built a new transmission crossmember and cut the frame down so it will lay body. I put the SD 10 inch step notch in and i am doing a custom bags on bars Triangulated Six link. i build one custom Air tank and installed a 3 gallon to give me about 9 gallons. Heres the build up you will see this truck at indy truck bash this year. Thats why i am posting it and the goal it to have it done a week or two before i go!

I dont smoke that much i just cleaned and threw the butts in there lol haha

The tanks would not fit between the crossmembers and i channeled it so it would go up farther the channels are where the bed slats go across

Re: 1980 Chevy C10

yeah i was thinking that too. I put a plate on the inside of the frame to sandwich the frame i might go back and brace it more. It sounds weird because i over engineer everything but you have to see it in person i think it is strong enough I dont know yet. We will see.

Re: 1980 Chevy C10

how long are your lower bars??? i have a shortbed thats half bagged for right now and i believe the leafs are the same.why didnt you just make a 4 link with the bags on the lowers??? can you blow that pic up of the lower control arm?? i cut mine so i didnt have to run a lower cup but i ended up rubbing a little. are you using suicidedoors.com's upper brackets for the front? looks good so far. why the 2800's??? what rims are you planning to use?

My lower bars are 28 1/2 Eye hole to Eye Hole. i did not do bags on bars on my lower 4 link bars because i wanted to use the stock leaf hangers and there is not enough room between the bars and the frame for the 2800's. i am using suicide doors upper plates! i just wanted to go overkill because its my hauler! ill post a better pic of the lowers at a later date

the bed is not even bolted down! I have to put some shims in the back of the bed to get it level and BOLT it down. I have to do the pedals, wiring, brakes, finish the ring and pinion, front frame horns, tub the bed, fix a sticking valve, and the steering linkage. A bunch of small stupid stuff. I should make my deadline. I dont know how nice it will be but ill make it down. thanks for the complements

Re: 1980 Chevy C10

Hey do you know any one around with a bed for one of these? I am in need of some body panels, I have had one sitting around my house with the same motor, I dont want to get into building the frame until I have the body. I am from canal fulton so if you got any spare panels let me know.

Hey just wondering, why did you Z the frame instead of notching the front cross-member the width of the frame rails?

Re: 1980 Chevy C10

i got a Q about z'n too..........once you Z the frame did the motor clear the stock hood? and do you think the 305 would clear the stock hood? and another thing, after you finished the Z, did the transmition lines and pinion angle where the driveshaft goes into the tranny have any probs?

Not sure what you mean about notching the Front Crossmember. The problem i was running into was the bottom of the control arms would lay out before the crossmember would lay out. There for i Z'd the frame. It is an easy mod ( as long as your a good welder)

Well since i ran the inline 6 the only thing that didnt clear was a pcv valve on the top of the valve cover. The original fan did not clear either. So i cut some of the support out of the hood where the PCV valve stuck up and cut an Inch and a half out of the fan blades. WEll the truck ran fine for the first hour then started over heating so i replace the stock fan with an E fan. Not sure on the V-8 i know its been done. I would say it works with some more work. But i Made a new transmission crossmember and i set the engine and trans at 6 degrees and the drive shaft coming out of the trans is level to the ground. It looks level it might be off a couple degrees. You can see what i did with the carrior bearing. Everything lined up really well.

Sorry i didnt take pictures because it wasnt anything fancy. I Z'd the frame 4 inches and cut about an inch and a half of the bottom of the frame to make it lay body and plated it in with 2x2 angle iron 3/16 wall
