** 145PSI or 200PSI? what is the Difference? ** INFO

For my numbers I am going to use this setup,

(1) 5 gal tank
(1) Viair 480 Compressor
(2) 2600 size bags in the front
(2) 2600 size bags in the rear

----

First fill time,

110~145PSI switch

0~145PSI = 3 min 58 sec
110~145PSI = 1 min 35 sec

145~175PSI switch

0~175 = 5 min 36 sec
145~175 = 1 min 41 sec

165~200PSI switch

0~200 = 7 min 11 sec
165-200PSI 2 min 12 sec

The higher the pressure the more work the compressor has to do, for example,

To fill only 10PSI

135~145PSI = 32 sec
165~175PSI = 38 sec
190~200PSI = 43 sec

See how the same 10PSI takes longer at a higher pressure?

BUT the higher the pressure the more 'air' that is in the tank.

For example.

Same tank as above.

Tank start pressure = 145PSI
Fill 4 bags to 100PSI tank will drop to 105PSI
---Drop in pressure =40

Tank start pressure = 175PSI
Fill 4 bags to 100PSI tank will drop to 135PSI
---Drop in pressure = 40

Tank start pressure = 200PSI
Fill 4 bags to 100PSI tank will drop to 160PSI
---Drop in pressure = 40

The bag will still use the same amount of air from the tank but a tank at an higher pressure will hold more so after the same lift the 200tank can still lift your truck a few more times.

Also the higher pressure will 'push' the air through the system faster. Think of it as a hole in a tank the higher the water level the faster the water is forced out of the hole.

This is why you hear people say 200PSI is FAST!... It is

Things to think about,

High pressure
PROS:
Fast fill speed
More fills
Small tank size

CONS:
Compressor runs longer
High pressure components are needed
You will have more water in your trap and the air will be hotter.

Low pressure
PROS:
Fast compressor refill
No special components needed
Longer life of components
Cooler air with less moisture

CONS:
Slow system speed
Limited play time
Larger tank size.

One last thing to mention,

Tank size remember how I said high pressure has more 'air' ?

Let me explain,

A 5 gal tank at 200PSI
Filling (4) bags twice to 100PSI
Final tank pressure is = 120

A 12 gal tank at 145PSI
Filling (4) bags twice to 100PSI
Final tank pressure is = 112PSI

They are equal but the key is now you can have the same play time as a 12 gal at 145PSI with a 5 gal at 200PSI

great read.. thanks.

so, i'm in the middle of building mine now.

i've bought everything from a few different people..

i have 2 5 gallon 9 port tanks from avs.. they are rated at 150psi

and for comps i have 2 viar 380c's

the pressure swtich that came with the tank is 145/175

jerid at sd told me i should have no problem running 175 on a tank that's rated for 150... your opinion??

also, you mention a few times in your post, that higher pressure requires special parts.. what parts do you mean??

i have the two 150 tanks. the two viar's , and 8 smc 3/8 valves. running 1/2 line. front bags are re6 and rear bags are re7

i wont be looking for speed, just play time, and will also be running fill and dump controls to slow it all down.

jsut curious if running this pressure switch will be bad, or if it will be ok. and making sure i dotn need any special components.

thanks.

Almost all DOT approved Air tanks are 1/3 safety ratted for example if it has max 150PSI Take that X3 and you get 450PSI that is about the pressure it will burst at. So even 200PSI is no problem on those tanks.

As for special parts.
Most compressors are only 145PSI but your 380's are 200PSI
Most valves can not operate at 200+PSI your 3/8" SMC's will work intermittent at 199~210PSI 175 is no problem.

I hope that helps.

Re: ** 145PSI or 200PSI? what is the Difference? ** INFO

cool info man i bought everything i have to run 200psi. kind of a stupid question but, does the pressure affect the dump valves? i have 1/2" smc's for fills and 3/8" smc's for dump (i like a slower drop). this is ok right?

Re: ** 145PSI or 200PSI? what is the Difference? ** INFO

yes the pressure affects the dump valves.. so make sure you dont go much over 200 psi at all. Doug and i tried this test a few yrs back on my truck. Running all 3/8" smc valves, we filled my tank to about 240 psi then slowwly drained the air out while hitting the switches. the valves wouldnt do anything until we got it down to 209 psi in my air tank. the 1/2" will operate at higher pressures so if anything goes wrong and your comp over fills your tank worst case is you will get stuck up in the air.

Doug, why don't you just go ahead and tell the automotive industry how to run alternate fuel at a low cost so we can lower gas prices, we all know you that you can do it. LOL

i'll guinea pig myself for that. i already get upper 20's on the highway, but 40mpg would be nice.

hondas can do it, but will never look anywhere near as good as an s10

does anyone even really come close to 200 psi in their bags? for it to effect the dumps?
