Odd Question...

I have an '85 4x4 Standard cab short bed that I want to turn into a 2wd dropped with a V8. Can I just take the 2wd suspension off a 2wd truck and bolt it onto mine?

Re: Odd Question...

if you pm me the measurements of your spindles from ball joint to ball joint i can measure my 2wd spindles and see if its the same height..

i always wondered if you wanted to remove the 4x4 stuff, if you could just put 2wd drop spindles and 3" drop keys and a 5in drop

Um I could do that.

I was also wondering if I could just remove all the 4x4 stuff and put some coil springs and shocks in there and call it done. But I figure that it would be easier to just get 2wd a arms and spindles and bolt those in.....

Nitemare your so fixed on this any explanation? or are you just positive that this doesn't work. 2wd truck are kind of hard to come by in Colorado and I'm rather cheap and don't need a 14th truck on my property

Re: Odd Question...

A 4x4 can be converted over to 2wd but its a ton of work and more headache than its worth. The 2wd spindles or a-arms are no where close to fitting the 4x4 frame. Even with you managing to convert it over you will still have to treat it as a 4x4 with the swap parts. You can get rid of the t-bars but the closest thing to coils you will find to fit are coil overs and the kit is about $900, designed for typhoons and syclones. You have to part out the front cv axles and run the outta part in the spindle but will get rid of the front diff.

Just find a 2wd frame if your so attached to the body and swap that over. Even better find a bravada t-case and front axle and make a AWD v8. Another option is to find lowering keys and just lower the 4x4, I think you can safely go down almost 4 inches before the front axles start with binding problems from being too low.

Re: Odd Question...

I am kind of attached to this body, I love this truck just want to take it a diffrent direction than origonally planned. I would love to find just a frame that would be perfect! I don't want to deal with an AWD or a 4x4 for this truck otherwise I would just drop it.

Thanks for all the input, I guess I'll start looking for a frame if not a truck to do a body swap on. Maybe I can trade my Neon for one!

Re: Odd Question...

Yeah, douchehammer may be fixated on the answer he gave, but you are really set on keeping that body. It is going to be a real headache. I have seen some really nice static dropped 4x4s. Either try and work with that, or find another truck. Maybe just trade your neon for a 2wd and keep your 4 wheel drive. I am sure you will miss having a 4wd when winter comes back around. Good luck

Re: Odd Question...

if the spindles are the same height ball joint to ball joint and the distance from the centerline of the ball joints to the hub is the same then 2wd spindles would bolt right up with no issues and they are very close by the naked eye, i just dont know the specific dimensions....

so yes you could lower it with spindles and keys like i said providing the measurements are close...they dont even have to be the same. as long as they are close he shouldnt have any issues

Oh I have 2 other 4x4's which is why I don't want this one 4x4 any more. I have my daily driver '00 BlaZeR2 and my '88.5 Suzuki Samurai with close to 8" (if not more) of lift and 33's which is my toy. I have 13 trucks/cars/motorcycles already and don't need another one. I eventually want this truck to be bagged and I just don't see that happening to a 4x4.

I have already put the word out on some local forums that I'm looking. I even found one on craigslist that has already started the V8 swap and contacted him but haven't heard back yet. But I'll see what happens. This is just my next project in line that I'm going to work on while I'm working on my wifes '52 GMC so I thought I'd start my research.

Re: Odd Question...

Pics of the 52. I am looking for a classic to build. I think I am set on a 60-66 c10. I think your best bet would be to trade or sell the truck for another then.

Thanks! We have been looking for a few years now and couldn't find one in the right condition and right price. But we just happen to see this one on the side of this store and thought why not look at it. It's all there but the motor and about 90% rust free! So $900 later we got it! I have a friend who has two origonal motors for these trucks sitting in is storage yard and said I can have one! So I hope to have it mobile by christmas!

Re: Odd Question...

Hey Nick,
I was looking for a 2wd 2 door Blazer for a V8 project when I came across a decent '85 that is a 4x4. It was so close to what I wanted and at a good price that I just went ahead and bought it.

I started asking alot of the same questions and ended up removing the front diff with plans to swap in a V8 and 2wd 5 speed. Also want to lower it a few inches and run some "street" tires and wheels, basically lose the 4x4 look.

Here's a link to the front drive removal and stub shafts I've done, hope this is helpful to you.

I got some lowering blocks for the rear I'm gonna try and plan on adjusting the torsion bars to lower the front. I'll be posting some pics of that too as soon as I get to that part of the project...

Huh...that's really good info. I keep looking for a little while for a 2wd because around here 4x4 are sought after expecially this time of year when the snow starts flying.....

If I don't find something by summer I might just have to go this route. But on a positive note I might have a lead on a Syclone shell.....
