Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Hello everyone, I'm new to the whole turbo thing and I was wondering if you guys could help me out a little. I have an 89 Camaro that we just dropped an older(89ish) 4.3 motor from a 1500 in. I want to put a turbo on it.

I'm not looking to spend a whole lot so I've been looking on eBay and found this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/GMC-S...#ht_5011wt_939

Is that a decent setup? ^ im prolly gonna need to buy more pipes? Lemme know what you used and where you got it

Also, where to start? I know fueling is a big issue with turbocharging. What else will be needed? New intake? I've heard of the marine intakes--whats so great about those? Injectors?...etc. as I said before, I'm new to this.

All the help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

That kit does not include the manifolds you will need. Also with the marine intake manifold you can fix all the fueling issues by converting to a true MPFI set up and allows you to upgrade fuel injectors.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

I was thinking I would turn the stock manifolds around so they come out the font. Wouldn't that work?

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

I think that you can do that, I believe that someone on here did do that, I did a rear mount so I don't have much info on which exhaust manifolds will work, but I think someone in this section did just flip the stock manifolds and made them work.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Ok I'll look into it, thanks. What exactly is the rear mount? I haven't looked into those

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Well I just mounted the turbo underneath the truck, mine is mounted right up under the bed in front of the right rear tire. Look at my thread as well as parish's and spestis.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Alright... So the only difference is where it is mounted?

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Pretty much, oil system might be a little different since the return won't be gravity return you will need an oil scavenge pump to put the oil back. Do some research on STS kits, they make rear mount turbo kits for corvettes, gto's, fullsize trucks, camaros, etc. Go to ststurbo.com and read up on the rear mount idea. I love my rearmount setup

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

If you have a non vortec engine then the sy/ty stuff will bolt right up, intake and all. What fuel system is on your 4.3 right now? Do you know if you're running the same PCM as the 92 sy/ty?

Here's a link to a guy selling a Typhoon turbo set up. http://www.s10planet.com/forum/showthread.php?t=24680

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Geoff- Will do. Thanks for your information!

12sws27- Yeah it's the non vortec engine so that might be a good route to take. The stock fuel system is on it now--not sure what that is. and I have no clue about that last part haha but im sure I can look it up. Thanks for the link, I'll think about buying his stuff

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

Seems there are sy/ty guys selling their exhaust manifolds quite often. So it won't be the last time a set pops up.

You really need to consider how you're going to fuel it. IDK how well TBI (if that's what you have) will provide the fuel needed for boost.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

The S-trim when it was out for the 4.3L gave you a small spacer with 2 injectors mounted in it to provide the extra fuel. Or go to a Holley setup were its easier to get bigger injector sizes to compensate.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

I was thinking maybe get a throttle body from a 5.7 or something. Would that provide enough fuel?

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

So I've been doing some research and I haven't seen any TBI turbo setups. Is it even possible?

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

You'll have to use parts for a blower. Its gonna be a custom kit.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

the problem with the TBI being boosted if that s is harder t tune, becausse you go from using one injector per cylinder to two injectors for all 6 or all 8. So the injectors hve to be gigantic.

Being new to turbos, I'd suggest buying a kit specifically designed for the 4.3

That first link posted for the syclone stuff might be your best bet. It may not be completely bolt on, but it wont need to be completly fabbed and pieced together.

I'd say with that kit all you'd need is a fuel pump, intercooler and piping, computer and wire harness, and you'd be pretty much good to go.

Re: Turbocharging my 4.3 Camaro

I do know that the 454 TBI has larger injectors, I cant remember how big but they are larger naturally.
