turbo/supercharger question
hey guys.. i have a 94 4.3 liter.. one of my friends did a 350 swap into his s10 from a 4-banger and now he wont stop running his mouth. is there any way if i turbo or supercharge the 4.3 that i'll have a chance to beat him or is it going to take more mods than that?

Re: turbo/supercharger question
you think just putting nitrous on the 4.3 would beat that?

Re: turbo/supercharger question
The 4.3 is really a 350 without 2 cylinders, and putting nitrous on will do more than 2 cylinders would do.

I already have a MIG welder, and most of the supplies to do the work, and I know a friend who lets me use his post lift, and pipe bender at the shop so that save me having to pay someone out the yinyang to do all the custom bending and welding and enything else that goes wrong in the process. Your bigest deal is going to be computer to handle the fuel issues, your going to have to upgrade your fuel delivery system, I don't know if you are running TBI, CPI or MPFI Reply to that question if you would and i'll try to answer it. You are going to have to get an aftermarket computer to handle the different pressures and demands of a turbo, Megasquirt is one such unit but the kicker is that you have to program it yourself, however once you get the programing down it is by far the better way to go because you can fine tune it and tweak it yourself from a laptop instead of having to pay some one to burn you a custom chip or to program it for you. Very nice flexibility ONCE YOU LEARN HOW TO MANAGE EFI PROGRAMING it's not for the faint of heart. MegaSquirt's website, lots of good things to read and it will help you understand what you are dealing with on EFI custom tuning... http://www.megasquirt.info/index.html But the bottom line was that for me to go to a MPFI V8 (like an LT-1 or LS-1) was going to cost over 4000.00 by the time I got done converting the ENTIRE fuel system to higher fuel presure(I run a TBI @ 20 lbs MPFI runs @ 40 lbs of fuel pressure) and buying the V8 and the computer acc and so on... I figure that the turbo rig will end up costing me about 2 large when it's all said and done. But i'm planing on buying another 4.3 off this forum( they run about $200-300 ) and have it rebuilt from the crank up to handle the 15lbs of boost I intend to run on it. You can run up to 8 lbs on the stock 4.3 motor without problem, just remember that all turbocharged engines are custom engines, you cannot throw 15lbs on any old motor and expect to get away with it for very long, same goes for juice. use it in small amounts (not over 75) and be carefull you can use it time and time again, hold it for a sec too long... BOOM hope that help man, sorry it's so long but it's not a simple matter turboing our 4.3's. one the new 4.3 is done hoping to run about 400HP or slightly less, just compare though... a V8 LT-1 puts out about 290HP, a LS-1 about 330... your stock 4.3 put out 150 but by the time you put 4 grand into converting your V6 into a V8 you have exactly this $4000.00 for 290-330HP if your cheap on everything else and beg borrow and steal parts... you drop $4000 into a 4.3 you can have it rebuilt, have all the internals forged and treated, brand new rods, pistons, head gaskets which can take the increased boost, and a turbo puting out over 15 lbs of boost which is going to hurl you down the road between 360-412hp depending on what components you choose to use and so on and a BRAND NEW REBUILT MOTOR WITH ZERO MILES...so it's pretty clear as far as dollar VS dollar, yes a V6 is the better option (unless you just throw a cheap old 220hp v8 into your dime) ... also you getting bragging rights... ( my v6 s10 just trashed this dude's LS-1 V8 corvette) hows that for insiration?? ok thats enough i'll shut up now ![]() Last edited by zeldalord : 01-10-2006 at 09:16 PM. |

Re: turbo/supercharger question
Yeah, those pics are a little old. I took those when I first got it. I need to get some more pics. So far I've rebuilt the dash with Ultralite gauges, reworked the brake system to use an F body master cylinder, all new door seals/weather strip, tan carpet, installed the tan leather seats, started sanding/primering, and I put the 17x9.5 275/40/17 TT2s from my TA on it. Not so ghetto anymore.
BTW, I hate that show. If you want to submit some pics to Overhauling I wouldn't object. ![]() |
