Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
I got my top end back today. Along with my new cam that took 4 weeks and some change to custom make.
After finding out the block I blew a hole in cylinder 3 that cylinder 4 was cracked. So I decided to change hopefully for the better . The heads I had to have changed for the new lift of the came so they would expect the springs plus the head surface was checked for smoothness.![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() For those that talk spring rate the new springs are dual Nextex springs with 265LBs at the seat and 650Lbs open. The nitrous can flow through with ease. |

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
The new cam for this thing is a full custom nitrous solid roller cam from Crower Cams. Its a round lobe hardened Billet steel cam since they did not have a core to make it from. Measurements off the cam card read .683 on intake and .707 on the exhaust side with adv dur. at 306 intake and 317 exhaust and @50 duration measures 270 on the intake and 278 exhaust with lobe Separation at 114. You gotta love it.

You can buy it for your own setup for a arm leg and a couple of organs to offset for the econ.

That cam sounds just beautiful for nitrous, you going to install it with about 2 degrees of advance on it, or straight up? That's a HELL of a lot of lift, are you going to run lower rockers so you get faster rockers to go with your solid lifters or are you just running really long valve stems with those heavy dual springs.

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
Actually either gonna run strait up or negative 2 degrees on cam. The cam was built for the intention of running 1.6 rockers since that is what I already have. The valves are already longer then stock do to the fact of the Brodix head. The machine shop set them up to wear I can max the spring at .730 inches of lift and only worry about floating, I can get other springs and re shim and be good for .800 inches of lift before worrying about getting longer valves then I already have. Unfortunately when you go solid the lift goes strait out the roof. Guess that is just part of the deal with that.

Thats crazy man. That cam has the specs of a super nasty big block or LSX. That little 4.3 will have a very intresting idle.lol Mad props on building up a 4.3 instead of an old gen 1 or 2 sbc v8 like everyone else.

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
I plan on getting it to the track before the end of the season. I'll have the bottom end back next week. Then I can take and measure for the head gaskets order them and get everything back together. If I get the bottom end Monday I can have the gaskets by Thursday and as long as no one bugs the hell out of me I can have it back in the truck that weekend I got this thing down to a science were I can pull motor and trans in like a hour and a half and vice versa. Setting the damn rocker arms takes me the longest of anything.

Well got the block back from the machine shop the other day. Now the heads and valve train are set and this weekend it will be going in.

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
If you want old valves and springs that aren't worth anything. Most of the valves are pitted from nitrous or knife edged and the springs are the old factory ones. Was doing some cleaning. All the good springs and valves a tucked away in there boxes.

I like your front cover. i wish there was some solution for the timing chains for the balance shaft motors

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
honestly I bought the cover some time ago and wish I bought a 3 piece to make cam timing adjustment easy. At least though there is no need to pull the pan. I wonder if you can modify it to work on the balance motors.

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
or wanting a quick-change setup, i could understand wanting a different cover. but you would have to have a pretty wild valvetrain to need antything other than a stock single roller timing set for durability, unless youre wanting an adjustable set. |

BTW, Disturbing V6, do you use any kind of oil spash shield
on the intake, or in the lifter valley? |

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
No I have never used one as of yet. Over the winner I'm toying with the idea of making the intake a two piece were I can take the runners and everything off and leave the valley tray on. Might add some sort of splash shield but if I do a two piece I really don't see the need of a splash shield unless to redirect were the oil goes.

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
Im thinking that's what I have. Its a 5/8 ? chain....i remember talking to cloyes when I was building the motor and I got the strongest they had for the balance shaft. They said that the oversized single was almost as strong as the double.
Im wondering of you can run the older non balance crank in a balance block.... i think the snouts are milled back farther on the older blocks. so if the castings between the blocks are mostly the same on the face (sans balance shaft)....you might be able to use any of the sbc stuff |

Re: Top End for the nitrous fed Beast and the stick that Thumps in the night
in my truck had only minimal wear or stretch after 71K miles. it wasnt easy to distinguish an appreciable reduction in slack in the new timing set... |
