Question T3 turbo on a 4.3? (2003 s10)

Hey guys,

I've never done a turbo/supercharger setup before and a friend of mine recommended that I get a T3 if I want to turbo my 4.3..what is your opinion of this and what type of price range would I be looking at for a complete setup? (And what are all the additional requirements aside from the turbo kit? ie: New fuel system, etc.) I have a 2003 s10 with a stock 4.3 (another friend of mine believes it's not completely stock and thinks there might be a cam in it but I cannot verify that). The only add-ons that I'm aware of include my K&N CAI and my Jet Performance Programmer (after I upgrade my exhaust and everything I plan on selling it and getting a W4M tune).

And if I do decide to put a T3, what's a proper boost rating on a stock 4.3? I don't want to decrease the life span of the engine or damage it..from what I've read on the forums the 4.3 can handle up to 20 psi safely, is this true? I was thinking about keeping it below 10 to be on the safe side but I'm still a total noob to the turbo game. Thank you.

Re: T3 turbo on a 4.3? (2003 s10)

There are not going to be any T3 chassis that will produce controllable, or reliable boost for a 4.3. If you have no prior expearience with forced induction I would strongly reccomend performing a great deal of research before you even crack a bolt loose on your engine. Most of the turbo 4.3's are going to be custom set up's even using syty manifolds and turbo. This is one of those if you have to ask you cannon afford it kind of things.

If you want to do it, research, and understand that it will not be done the right way cheap. The n/a 4.3 will handle boost if fueled and tuned properly. The more boost you run, the more expensive the project is going to become. Putting a hard number on it is impossible because of the custom work, and the zillion different ways you could go about doing it.

very true, on my 2.2 project you can do a very basic turbo running like 5 lbs of boost and its somewhat ok without intercooler, bov, and alot of the bells and whistles. but once you get 8lbs+ thats when you have to start spending alot more money. Just do research and you will find alot more info on what can be done and what cannot.

This.

And for how much? I love my truck honestly, I was just thinking about putting a turbo on it to give it some more power..I'm actually pretty apprehensive about the whole idea though, considering I have no personal experience with engine modifications.

Only one way to learn and that's to research and do it.!!!! Buy books about turbocharging (corky bell) and just look up some cases were people have done full builds with pics and write ups. I don't believe in the saying "if you have to ask you can't afford it". What does not knowing how to turbocharge something have to do with how much money you have??

Anyway, good luck and learn that's how we get other ideas for our platform by more people doing things to them.

Things you will need to address.
custom chip tune / fuel system upgrade with adjustable regulator/ custom headers or SYTY manifolds. wideband o2 and the list goes on!!
Im running 26psi on my stock longblock with good luck. To do this I run 117 octane C16 in it at all times. 20psi can be done with methanol injection if you dont want to bother with the expense of race fuel! All in all, get ready to open up your wallet!!!

Re: T3 turbo on a 4.3? (2003 s10)

To the OP, if you want more power out of the 4.3 start looking and researching as much as you can find on this site and other sites to see what's been done with other peoples setups. If your just looking to have more power and not break the bank then look into doing bolt on mods, like y pipe, electric fans, intake mods, and a tune. If your good with a wrench and feel like getting your hands dirty then a cam swap would also be an option. For many people that want to boost these motors not many bite the bullet. I for one am going nitrous for a while till I feel like I have enough money to do the turbo route.
