Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
Ok well 10am truck got strapped down to the dyno and tuning began. Me and the tuner enzo worked side by side the whole day and after 2 hours of part throttle he started sweeps. Knowing ahead of time of a small exhaust leak on the driver side bank, on the crossover. Which was small at 10am and grew to a big crack by 430pm. So after 15 pulls i threw it the towel and he promised to weld up the crack no charge and strap it bak down for a final run.
First pull Stock timing 12.0afr 40 degrees out 9.5psi boost 336whp Then after adding 2 degrees in timing, we picked up 15hp around 5000rpm which gave me a smooth power band from 4200rpm pulling all the way to 5500rpm+. Adding more than 20 degrees worth of timing did not result in knock just a loss in power, so we never had to dance that line of knock vs. power. 18.5 degrees to 4800 then 20 degrees to 6000rpm. Changing the timing resulted in 341whp peak but extended the power band 15hp till 6000rpm. As opposed to the first run which peaked and then tapered down to 315whp. Next 5 runs all were repeatable 12.0afr, with a slight peak to 12.2- 12.3 where we made peak power. 340whp-342whp since we were all dialed in we went for power pulls, my RR tire had 20psi so we threw 30psi in both tires and put down 351whp!!!!!!!!!!! :-) at 9psi Best power pull was 351.5whp @ 5100rpm 397 ft lbs torque @4400rpm we later did a pull for 353whp but only brought it to 5100 and got out of the throttle. By this time the exhaust tubing crack grew so next thursday he will weld up the pipe and hopefully i will see boost earlier with more power. another test pull we made 353.2whp @5100rpm |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
my goal for the day were 350whp at 9psi, i really would like to keep the boost level at 9psi for awile because i have a relatively safe setup. I will put on a boost controller and kick it to 11psi-12psi and hopefully hit my 400whp mark and that will probably be the most i want to push this setup.
The secondary injectors worked very well, granted we had to tune the stock # 19lb injectors around then because then have two dials, vacuum boost as well as gain. But other than WOT at full boost coming into boost needed a considerable amount of tuning. If the SDS system had adjustment to take away or add fuel at a certain rpm that would have been ideal. two notes this was on a dyno dynamics but calibrated for dynojet numbers. As long as we did not leave too much power on the tables i was content with dynoing 330whp or better. Last note: Holy S%^T i had no idea how much an air filter kills the turbo. I was running without air filter and front grille to monitor the engine better. End of the day we ran it with the air filter lol dropped 8hp with the air filter and it richened up the fuel to 11.9 |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
two 96lb injectors at 351whp pushed them to 75% cycle duty. I got to see the leds under the hood on the dyno run. Not that i will need another but if i ever needed more fuel i'm sure i could split the injector harness and use three secondary injectors |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
i got the exhaust manifold and xover pipe crack welded today, the tuner weld the crack as well as putting a collar around the weak spot out of 16 gauge stainless. It came out great except the xcrossover no longer lines up. the flanges are together flat but off by 1/2". So yet another couple of days and more money.

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
lol yea i have plently of room. My current cooling setup is not sufficient i'm jus not overheating because its 20 degrees out. August rolls around and i'm sure cooling will be another problem.
I switched from a 5spd radiator to a automatic radiator out of a blazer. It was much thicker. Idk if using a better fan system will solve the problem. The temps under the hood must be ridiculous now that the turbo exhaust piping is there and thats definately the main factor of my cooling problems. Options Bigger Radiator Hood scoop to get fresh air in, or a cowl. better fan and or fans Picking up a 10 bolt from jersey with a LSD and 3:42's (no slicks on this rear) Finish interior gauges Tuning adjustments, I was not happy with some aspects of my tune. I have to work on slowly leaning out the truck for fuel economy. Throwing new tr6;s in gapped at .030's More weight reduction. Truck gets put bak on dyno next week Progress video is in the making. |

I'd give the LS1 fans a try. They may move enough air out of the engine bay when they're on to lower ambient temps.

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
I have the same problem. With my intercooler and A/C, the damn thing will overheat in slow traffic when its warm out. My 16" S-blade Syclone fan will not keep up. I'm thinking of modifying my inners to allow air to flow into the engine bay and maybe working something out with the bumper. I wish there was an easy, cheap radiator swap... I couldn't find anything

i believe the c4 corvette has similar dimensions to ours, i never followed thru wit it. I wonder if a hood scoop would help reduce engine bay temps, but then again if u are in traffic it would be pointless

You would be wise to get some thermal rapping on your down pipe. Double it up so it really insulates. It will aid in keeping your underhood temps down. PEACE>Tony

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
ok, well, since you got the hose taken care of, what you gonna do as far as fans? now that you can play with the computer, you can enable the cooling fan via ecu, much like mine with the jetDST. i use the flex 220 (w/o controls) it covers the whole rad aswell. just a relay for each fan and a ground to the ecu to turn it on. (i give credit to RAT for this.) keeps my 4000lb bohemeth cool in the summer. along with my Cowl hood
if you have any questions as far as the relay set up, just it me a PM and ill draw one out for ya |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
A cowl hood was a idea i was toying with, I have one 16" fan, on a flexalite temp switch. Thermostat is 180 and 180 for the fan. I might take the underdrive pullies off, go with a bigger rad, run remote oil cooler to take the load of the radiator. I had mine hooked up with a relay but didn't like the fact that the fan shuts off with the engine. Water inside heats up and opens the thermostat then hot water has no pump moving it. So by running a hot all the time I make sure i don't cook the motor is i shut it off fast.
I'm still trying to troubleshoot fuel pump issues, school and a new job have kept me occupied. Last edited by meyers2211 : 03-18-2008 at 10:06 PM. |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
The remote coolers will definitely help out the stock radiator. I wouldn't go so far as to take the underdrive pulleys off, they'll help out your turbo spooling more than they negatively affect your cooling.
The easiest way to get your fan to run after the truck is off is just to wire it directly to the battery rather than a switched ignition source. The amount of time the fan runs isn't very likely to drain your battery. But, if you are worried about that, you can always get the flex-a-lite VSC controller which is an all-in-one unit. Mine was ~$80 off summit, but I love it. It came with all the wiring I needed, I didn't have to mess with any relays, and it lets the fan run for 30 seconds after the engine is shut off. here it is: ![]() Last edited by BudRacing : 03-18-2008 at 10:27 PM. |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
thts neater than mine, i no longer run the relay it stayed on for a day. This is my 4th efan install and just like u find it best to hook directly to the batt
Update After a few nights of racing and having one section blowoff i decided to go and fix the problem. Problem was SDS system i bought had injector bungs welded in a steel 2 3/4" pipe, well they don't make adapters for em. So i sleeved a 3" pipe over the outlet and a 2 1/2" pipe sleeved on the inside. This is what is looked like in stages. Now that i have pipes i can work with. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Last edited by meyers2211 : 03-18-2008 at 10:41 PM. |

Yeah, I ran the $25 adjustable one for a little while, but it wasn't a very clean install and lacked the features I wanted... so I upgraded. I think your best bet is to run separate tranny and oil coolers.

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
what i was meant to say with my last post though, that running the fan through the stock ecu. you can change things like, ON and OFF temp, and run time and off temp after the ign is off. that way itll keep the car cool with the ign off and you dont have to worry about flippin a switch or leaving it on too long you can also have the fan turnoff at whatever speed since it;; be useless over a certain mph or so anyhow. and i think you have the JetDST, so all itll cost is a relay and some female connectors.

did you run seperates? I don't have/ cant really have a tranny cooler, i have a 5spd. I'm running synthetic to help cope wit the turbo temps, but i jus hope by using an external oil cooler it will rid my overheating issues. |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
I don't currently have separates on mine right now since I really don't have cooling problems... but I may do it someday. I've been around several other projects that did benefit from them though.
What temp do you have your fan come on? What kind of shrouding do you have around it, if any? How many CFM's is your fan rated for? and finally, how close is your fan to the radiator? |

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
The fan is mounted wit the efan plastic ties that work great. I have no shrouding and the fan was rated for a shit load more than it actually flows. tough to get a setup in there that is shallow that doesn't cost 250
I ugraded from 5spd rad to automatic radiator which was thicker. I think i will do the remote oil cooler and see how that affects the overheating. Has anyone received good cooling results from the cowl hood? I can;t part wit 500 for a hood unless i was gonna get some major heat exhaustion |

I think a sheet metal shroud and spacing the fan about an inch or two off the fins would help that out a lot.

Re: Built 4.3 turbo underway Pics will talk
It finally got started again after 2 months of being dormant. New windshield, new bumper new mirrors, and a i finally washed it. It went back on the dyno yesterday, 330whp with new exhaust system, so i'm expecting 365whp with the exhaust cutout.
Next set of obstacles The rubber grommet for the the IAT sensor is leaking fuel and boost. My wastegate makes up for it but since my secondaries are firing fuel i have fuel pushing out. What have you guys done with your IAT sensor??? |
