Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well i got some work done this weekend. it was pretty nice to steal away this weekend and work on the truck. spent most of Saturday working the fuel rails and prepping and painting them. they are pretty good right now but i think i will wet sand them to get them perfect.( i had one run, cuz it was really cold out and i was trying to hurry.) then a few more coats of paint.

they are painted now but i don't have ne pics yet.

then Sunday i worked on mounting my a pillar gages and pod as well as wiring up the power and starting to run the harnesses.

i used some super strong double sided tape. they wanted me to use the little plastic push clips but i didn't want those to be visible and drill holes so the world could see. this stuff holds pretty dam strong i gave it some tugging and pushing and it wasn't budging.

pic of the back where i cut access hatches so that i can connect the wiring harnesses. as well as preform any adjustments on the afr gage, you can see the round "cut out" area so that a screw driver can get to the adjustment screw on the gage. (the one on the right) i also spend alot of time hand sanding the areas where the wires will touch so that nothing gets chaffed. the harnesses from aem are really well protected already.

mounted for the first time.

couple pics of them powered up

then on the way back home, this happened

the pics are kinda blurry but it got ridiculously foggy and cold, not that it wasn't cold already but it got WAY cold. visibility at times was down to 40-50 ft. totally nutz. especially in Colorado.

little hard to see but that says 1* F. I TOLD YOU IT WAS COLD!

truck ran great tho, i had the heater on the lowest fan setting and we were just fine. i could see out the windows fine too. i felt bad for all the other cars we saw there windows were all fogged to hell and they were all bundled up.

i was VERY happy with the truck this weekend! there was near white out conditions on they way down to work on it and then the fog on the way up, along with the snow and ice. She handled like a dream through it all. not regretting selling the camaro at all right now!

I'm going to be in Glenwood/Aspen. Not sure if I will be able to get that far north.

Blazer is looking good none the less

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

gleenwood is 3-4 hours east of Denver its a long drive. we go there every year for a family reunion. do yourself a favor and GO TO THE HOT SPRINGS. you will not regret it. i think it is supposed to be one of the largest hot springs pools in the world. (if not the biggest).

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

lil update yesterday or a couple days ago (cant remember, thats what finals do to you.) i got my oil drain flange from function 7. it is a really nice piece 7075 t6 billet aluminum, nice and thick and strong.

came with the gasket and hardware which all fit. def. worth the $20.

also received my 2 bar map sensor that i ordered from gm parts direct. tested it out and it all worked. very excited about it, now i just have to finish up the program i am writing to convert all of my tables to 2 bar and reprogram the truck and see if it doesn't blow up! i actually started it with the 2 bar today and it ran, much to my suprize, not great but it ran, no check engine light either.

finals are over now so hopefully within the next week or so i should be able to make some real progress. im very excited.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

yea man im still working on that, its been snowing here constantly so i haven't been too inclined to crawl under the truck. the ones that are in my exhaust thread are all that i have right now. i will get some as soon as i can. basically the passenger side is in the stock location and the driver loops up and over the diff and then around and out the back. ( i have a header flange on the diff crossover so that i can un bolt and take the whole system out if need be.)

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

yea thats defently(sp can some one please tell me how to spell this) true. it is my daily. i off road some but not a ton. i live in co and when the winter hits 4x4 is a defent (sp again) plus. a lift is an idea i am kinda kicking around, i don't know especially once boosted and the fact that i spend 95% of my time on pavement and its already a zr2 i kinda doubt ill end up doing it. plus i don't have any money. it sits pretty good as far as i am concerned right now. i would like to be able to hook a trailer to it and tow whatever i need. maybe some day it wont be my daily and then things will change but at least until im out of college and have some of my massive debt paid off i will prolly still be rocking it daily, which wont be so bad once i get the turbo on there. hell its not bad now.

also it is going to be a sleeper, totally. no one will know ne thing until im gone. its already black and i am going with the sleeper theme. it should come out pretty good. i hope everyone likes the build up and hope some people can learn from it to make their own rides unique.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well i finished up the fuel rails yesterday. i think they came out pretty well.

the paint is semi gloss.

what do you guys think? they will look alot less alone once they are in the engine bay and the rest of the plumbing is installed.

Sweet buildup. So how are you planning to hold the rails down, maybe could you take a mockup pic with your hold downs?

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well didn't get a whole lot done today, i am waiting on parts so we will see how that works out. i did manage to paint the edged of the gag pod (they didn't get covered very well.) and test fitted the grill, i think it looks pretty good. the bug guard will be gone when i install the new hood.

hope to get alot done later in the week once all my parts arrive.

stay tuned, i should have updates about every day this week, and hope to make good progress.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well heres an up date for you all

i got alot of parts today, i *think* that i have everything i need to install my 2114. so i will probably be putting that together later tonight and hopefully installing it tomorrow. actually as i am writing this i realize that i need one coupling for the intake, before it will work.

ne way here is the stuff i got today.

42 lb/hr fuel injectors (flow matched set) and pigtails to wire them in as well as flanges for both the inlet and the exhaust side of the "hot" side of the turbo. the first flanges got lost in the mail but one call to rpm and they made it right. they have been very good to work with and know their stuff. i recommend them to anyone. www.raceprovenmotors.com

also this should give you some idea of the plumbing nightmare i am facing.

and thats just most of it.

also i got my hood cleared today.

color sanded and ready for clear.

cleared.

things are starting to come together. still waiting on parts but i should be able to make pretty good progress soon.

stay tuned!

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

yea its getting exciting, i am dam near done ordering parts. ordered the last of my intake connections today and i think all i have left is a bov. got some more new parts today!

the coolant connectors for the turbo

these came really fast. all stainless steel. from www.buyfittingsonline.com good quality and cheap!

battery relocation kit (if any one has done one of these can you post pics to help me out, their instructions are a little vague). new coolant overflow tank. both of which are leaving to make room for the turbo.

98 ss i took your word on the plugs ngk iridium tr6ix so we will see if they work good. if not its your ass on the line.

and the 2114 and fpr coming together.

with the new 42lb/hr injectors installed.

one more pic of the hood i just couldn't resist.

you can see a few of the spots on the upper right, that need to be wet sanded. unfortunitly the last time i tried to polish something it cam out like shit!. but both of the times before that it worked great. so im a little nervous. hopefully it will work out.

Lol, if those plugs dont work for you, your doing something wrong.

Same coolant bottle and batt relocation kit I have.....we must send our paychecks to the same place. Lol

I love how the rails and lines look. My fuel lines are on the list of things to redo.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

yea thanks man. and i think we probably do send our money to the same ppl. i found out that the bat relocation kit is not nhra legal so i am returning it and ordering the kit from summit that is. it was only like 20 bucks more and i figure that if im building this truck i will probably end up at a drag strip once or twice.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

yo yo ur turbo looks gorgeous so take the time to paint the housing so it doesn;t rust, i think you will melt the rubber hose for the coolant on the turbo, and also no need for teflon tape on -AN lines jus a dab of Threadlocker. I'm sure they are fine but tef tape gives the risk of getting in the lines.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

hahaha go summit!!!! i have the same coolant bottle and battery relocation too. I had to change batteries to a top mount my 97 has a side mount and it would not fit in the box right. Also i hated the way battery clamp worked so i said fk it, and drilled 4 holes in the bed and bolted it down.

thanks i think the coolant lines will be ok, considering they are designed to handle high temp coolant. and the turbo will have a heat wrap. we will see.

also the Teflon tape is on the npt side they are an to npt adapters and npt requires it to seal. it is not on any of the solely an fittings.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

its a pain. I finally figured it out. you come up from the bottom through the clip, split the clip and go through the two pieces where the spikes are, put the clip back togeather and go under the other side between the strap and clip like a belt buckle.

did that make any sense?

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well here is a little update. i haven't been able to get any work done lately. me and my girl both came down with the stomach flu Christmas night. luckily we made it through all of the festivities before it happened. as a result the only thing i have been doing is praying at the porcelain alter.

i did however receive a few more parts.

couplers and t bolts

my intercooler

hopefully i will get feeling better so i can get some work done.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

nice intercooler i have the same one, looks like it was built for the truck and i don't think it could of fit any better or look cleaner.

I was under the impression that a drop of locktite on AN and NPT fittings. Then i jus asked my father and he corrected me brass NPT should have teflon on em.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

any npt needs teflon because they use the threads for sealing an fittings don't because they use the flange, or flare as the sealing surface. that goes for all other fittings that use the threads as the sealing surface as well.

yea about a year ago "ish" when i was doing all my research i had found that intercooler and saw that you got the same one. it is the best one i have found for the truck. you have any pics of it installed.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well little update i have been getting some work done.

i spent 2 days installing the remote battery mount kit and im still not done! that thing has been a majjjoor pita! i mean its pretty normal for some stuff to fight you when your working on cars but this has been total ridiculous. i have never had something go this poorly, and i been working on cars for a while. ..... in any case the bat is now mounted in the rear of the cab, not in the box lots of other issues there i think i will probably have to get a new bat to make it work. so ne body know where i can get an optima yellow topper for free???

other than that i have basically finished the 2114 and if it wasn't for 2 inches of fuel line it would be ready to install. but i will probably have to order another connector and set it up a little different than i planned to make it work.

i just finished up the turbo heat wrap tonight.

for those of you mumbling. yes i know how to sew.

inner liner.

sealed up nice and tight! i am very happy with the way this turned out. and rightfully so cuz it took long enough.

also been working on mounting the cutout switch for the bat to meet nhra specs. thats coming along, ill post pics when its done.

thats about all for now. let me know what you think and check back soon, hopefully i will get some more done.

i am pretty crazy busy right now because we are going to Mexico for a week and i am getting everything ready for that so i am trying to get as much done as i can before we leave so i can finish up when we get back.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

ok lil up date. i got the battery finally completely installed and relocated. that took forever to finish. but it cam out nice. i had to buy a new battery to make it work (mine was side post) but thats ok cuz the other one had been completely drained a few times and was probably on its way out.

it doesnt look crooked in real life... dont know whats up with that pic.

also while i have been doing all of this work i noticed my belt tensioner was almost dead. i thought it was starting to go when i replaced my idler pulley and belt on the side of a mountain above timberline in the snow. that was not fun. but it was crazy expensive in the mountain town where i got the other parts so i left it for the time. well i replaced it the other day while i had everything out, and as i removed it it literally fell apart. into every individual piece. it really was on its last leg, good thing i got it now instead of it dieing on the side of the road.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

whats up everybody!?

did you miss me?

well im back safe and sound. it was a pretty nice trip all in all. and nice to spend some time with the girl and family for a while. but, after a week, its nice to be back home now.

so i figured y not get a little work done on the truck.

i got the 2114 all squared away so hopefully i can install it tomorrow. hopefully.

that last 180* bend was the only thing left that i needed and it came while i was away. it was the only way to make it work with such tight quarters, and not being able to bend -10 hard line. (neither could any of the shops i called and i called alot.). ne way its all buttoned up now and i think it came out well, it should have good clearance to everything. i hope.

aerial view. brought to you by the good year blimp.

also i made little spacers for the forward 2 fuel rail hold downs as they needed them. so i will need some nuts and washers from the hardware store tomorrow and i am hoping to install it.

thats all for now
stay tuned.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

well see worst case i can make a new line and run it basically straight up at the passenger fuel rail and then over farther up. i think it will clear tho its pretty high if you look at the first pic you can see that it ends up as high as the tb elbow, well see tho there is some play in this set up to to change the angels and such.

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

only bad part if it does clear would be having to take a line off to do a cap and rotor change

Re: bad news... good news (turbo Build)

that looks really close man. i gotta say it looks to me like it wont fit, hope i'm wrong though. you could always loop it up and over the top of the dizzy, just turn the pass side 90 upward and swap the driver side 180 for another upward facing 90. thats kinda what i did. 10an line sucks to bend like you said though. i would have recommended using a Y block, run 10an feed to it, and do a 6an or 8an to each fuel rail so each rail has a fuel supply and one isnt feeding of the other

looks awesome so far though. your making great progress
