wait4me tune or e fan

I am new to the site and have just purchased a 1998 s10 4x4 with a 4.3 and 5 speed. I am looking at doing my first mod to help get a little better gas mileage. which would be a better mod as for maximum gas mileage a wait4me tune, or switching to an e-fan? I think each mod would cost close to the same amount. Thanks for any info.

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

well you can do the efan for a lot cheaper if you use fans off of cars found in the junkyards.Go to the how to section will tell you which fans will work and how to wire them.

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

If you can afford it I'd do both, CAI wouldn't hurt either,

I'd do the pcm tune first.

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

I do plan to do both and probably a cai eventually but not all at once. However I just filled up for the first time and am very pleased. I got 21.7mpg and that is with no highway driving? Does this sound normal? I was expecting around 16. Either way it is a lot better then the 12mpg I was getting with my full size dodge. Thanks for your input!

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

pcm will add 1-2mpg depending on settings you get put in from what ive heard.

e-fan will free up a few hp and get better mpg because its not having the motor pulleys spin it, its just electrical now.

if your fan is shot, then e-fan will help the most.

the tune will also take about a week to have ti back in your hands. so the one thing i would do, is save, and do both at once. this way your vehicle is only shut down once instead of twice.

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

21.7 does sound exceptional for a 4x4. But the 5 speed obviously helps quite a bit.

Could be just the way it worked out for 1 tank. Let's see what the next 1 shows.

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

PCM is $75 plus shipping if you send your own. I was told that I could get 1-2 mpg extra but oxygenated fuel would hurt that increase. They can also change trans settings for better performance. You will get better use of a tune if you have mods made to the intake and exhaust.

Based on amp draw and setup, the fan you would want is an LS1 with the $95 control unit from Summit Racing. (available lots of places though, but I can't remember the name) Total cost would be about $200 if you do it with the control unit and get a nice deal on the fan. (wiring cost, spare shroud, aluminum angle for mounting) The controller will soft start the fans and ramp them up as the engine gets hotter. Amp draw is lower so you would probably be able to use the stock alternator. An upgrade 130 amp alternator is also available as a 130 amp version from newer trucks labeled as an AD244. It's larger than our stock ones but will bolt up and will run $50-$100 at a boneyard.

Personally I'm doing the fan first as I know I can do it plus I need to fix my A/C and the fan will help it out once I have everything fixed.

I don't know about that AD244. Henry J. said it will "likely" work, but he wasn't sure. Have you checked the connectors on one yet?

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

I have not checked it on my 96. I've read so much I think I'm getting confused. Figured that 98 up would be the same.

I think that the AD244 didn't come out until '00 or '01, but I'm not sure either.

having both, i`d say the W4M tune is the more beneficial, for both performance and economy...

huh? never have i heard anyone say that E fans do not work. Less drag on the engine = more power and in essence fuel economy.

if the e fan is on all the time it draws power from the alt causing constant drag = no mpg gain...but my fans dont come on till the gauge reachs just under the 210 mark and only does that when sittin in traffic or have the ac on

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

That's why you use a fan controller. You want to set them to come when the coolant by where the upper radiator hose enters the radiator gets above a certain temperature. The fans hardly ever come on with mine under normal driving. Just when it is idling. Don't know about you, but we don't have "city" driving out here.

I have both done also + a CAI and exhaust, and I have to agree with Crew Cab Sonoma, the e-fan is great, your truck has new "ready power" (throttle response) that it never had before. Your truck stays cooler, quieter and your AC works better, and you'll gain a little mileage.
But the wait 4 me tuned PCM is by far the best & cheapest mod. you can do, that will save the most gas, add torque, HP, tune your transmissions shift points are raised to a better point, speed up shifts, make it feel like "a different" truck (look at other post)
Do the e-fan mod. too, but do the PCM first, if you can't do them at the same time.

PS- if you can't lay up your truck for more than a day or two, like me, for $160, you can keep your stock PCM, and W4ME will send you a tuned PCM.

Ever heard of an adjustable thermostat? Thats the correct way to do it anyways. Your alternator is making constant power weather or not the Electric fans are on. I dont understand why you think that when the electric fans come on, the engine is going to be subject to the same amount of drag as it would with a engine driven fan. Thats not true.

No way!! The alternator load changes each time you or the truck switches some component on/off. The load is frequently changing, and the fans will most definitely load up the alternator when they are switched on.

Not quite true, the more draw the more the batt. loses it's voltage & current, the voltage regulator senses the low battery voltage and starts the alternator charging the batt. back up to it's set (or OK) usually around 13.5-14.3 volts. If it fed a charge all the time (as you're saying) it would over charge the battery & overheat the alternater and batt.& destroy them in a very short time.

BTW- I do agree on a thermostat or at least a switch, (but if you ever forget to turn the switch on, you may cook your eng., e-fans should NOT be just wired to run all the time

Re: wait4me tune or e fan

PCM programming first!! My 4 doors has definate improvements with PCM programming.

Next on my list: high flow muffler and e-fan setup.

The 145 amp later model alternator has the same plug. I installed one on my 83 Chevy. It has a serpentine belt setup with the alternator on the driverside.

1. Pay for the tune by pay pal.
2. Print receipt
3. Fill out the following questions about your car.
4. Print out the questions.
5. Send receipt, tune questions and ECM together.
6. ECM returned in ~7 workdays
7. Install and enjoy!!

Payment Details from Pay Pal
Amount: $85.00 USD
Transaction ID:

Subject: (96 or newer model) Jimmy PCM programming

We do need the following info in with your payment so Jesse can customize the the tune for what you want:
1. VIN Number:
XXXXXXX

2. Any Mods: (what have you done to your vehicle?)
Example: updated MPFI spider with poppets removed, K&N filter, rebuilt transmission (rebuilt before I bough it), NGK spark plugs, external transmission cooler,

3. Tire Size: 255/60R17

4. Rear End Gear Ratios (if changed from stock): stock 3.42 gears

5. What you would like to see out of the tune: Better MPG, firmer transmission shifts, better torque converter lockup (45+ MPH lockup), corrected speedometer, better tune,

Please add anything I may miss to improve overall performance and MPG.

Internet users state you remove part of the torque drive programming. Removing up to 75% is fine. Internet users seem pleased with the change.

6. Phone number and return address: XXXXX

7. Fuel: 87 octane

Definitely do both mods if you're looking for better gas mileage, but I'd go with the tune first.

With his truck being a 5 speed, how much improvement is he going to see with the PCM tune?
