The 270 cam swap finale!!

Well i decided that it would be nice for future cam swappers and for everybody else to create a thread to sum up my 270 cam swap. The swap itself is happening this weekend. We will post up progress and pics every night.

My truck is a 97 s-10 4.3L so this parts list will not apply perfectly to everyone.

To start out. Here is my entire parts list including part numbers for summit racing and costs.

Cam...CCA-09-420-8 $265.95
Pushrods...CCA-7808-12 $25.25
Retainers...CCA-787-16 $49.25
Rockers...CCA-1416-12 $121.95
Studs...ARP-100-7201 $49.95
Valve Covers...TRD-9458 $51.95
Valve Cover Gaskets...FEL-VS50086R $21.39
Valve Springs...The Ls6 beehive valve springs are found cheapest on ebay through lingenferter($58.26)
Timing Set... CLO-9-3154 $132.95
Timing Cover...RNB-635-502 $23.75
Transgo Shift Kit...TRG-4L60E-HD2 $77.95
Transmission Filter...Found at your local autozone($15)
Transmission Oil...Found at your local autozone
Corvette Servo...The corvette servo is best found on ebay($15)
Water Pump Gaskets...SUM-G6303 $2.00 (Sold as a pair)
2 Exhaust manifold gaskets...GIB-9250 $35.55
Lower intake manifold gasket...FPP-1202 $19.95
Wait 4 Me Performance Computer Tune...$160

TOTAL: The total for this swap is about $1150. The transgo shift kit and corvette servos are not necessities but they will help out a lot. I am also doing a Ford 8.8 axle swap w/ 3.73 gears during spring break. Also i am having a new 2.5" y-pipe made this spring. I cannot calculate the cost of these as i have yet to purchase them.

For the actual swap itself you will need to rent a harmonic balancer puller and installer.
You will also need a couple quarts of oil and it'd be a good idea to flush out your dexcool coolant and replace with a better brand.
FOR THE RECORD. YOU DO NOT NEED TO MACHINE ANYTHING IF YOU PLAN TO USE THE LS6 BEEHIVE SPRINGS AND TALLER VALVE COVERS

That should be the majority of the parts and. If i forgot anything i will post them up asap.

Plus since the aftermarket is massive im always lookin at mods and crap lmao. I will *hopefully* do a cam swap but still thinkin it over, plus funds need to catch up with the ideas lmao. good luck with your swap btw

lifted97....this should be nice for other people who just want some extra horsepower without tearing apart their whole motor and spending a fortune like me and spiderdallas so take some videos!! i know for sure i'd love to hear it

I forgot to add that to succesfully complete the cam swap you must rent a harmonic balancer puller and installer from autozone along with a valve spring compressor.

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Well bought my W4Me tune today. I am getting it tuned for the cam and rockers i bought. I told him all the specs of my truck and all what i have done to my truck. I raised my shift points to 5300 rpms, ridded of the speed limiter, running my truck on 92 octane.

haha my rod knock and all, ive been driving this thing the whole time...the built motor is sitting at the shop, i've looked online at the summit page about my account history or whatever, and i first bought my cam pistons and rings in june, and shortly after sent my block to the shop....so it's been a good 6 months now...can't believe my motor has been hanging on that long..lol...i was gonna pay off my motor next week and take it home, but im reconsidering so that i could afford to get my computer tune and y pipe before i get my motor home that way i can have my tune for everything i have done and not need to send it back when getting parts after the tuned pcm is already installed...

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

It is 1:41 am friday morning and the cam swap commences in 12 HOURS!! Also to do the cam swap you will need a small compresser and a pressure gauge so you can pressurize the cylinder making sure the valves do not fall into the cylinder while swapping out springs. And i will need to send my computer back once when i do the rear axle swap

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Well we started on my truck at about 3:00 pm and we called it quits at about 1:15 am. As far as progress goes we dissassembled everything except the stock springs and we havent taken out the stock camshaft. We will pick up on that tomorrow. Here are the pics of how everything looks so far!!

^^YOU GOTTA LOVE THAT DEXCOOL!!

Basically all of my stock engine components will be for sale as parts or as a whole whovever wants whatever. Just make me an offer. Its all in good shape and im cleaning them up tomorrow. As for tomorrow we will see how far we can get. Maybe get it all almost finished up. We took a video of how the truck sounded before and well make a bunch of videos of how it sounds after. And how it runs hehe!! I know the lower intake manifold gaskets are notorious for leaking and we will probably pick one up from summit tomorrow. What kind is most recommended, meaning like material or brand. The kind i was looking at is FPP-1202 on the summit website for like 20 bucks. So thanks for all the help and info along the way guys and we will keep the pics and the info coming. Hopefully we will finish it up asap and get some cam videos!!

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

So this morning has ****ing sucked. First we could not get the torque head bolts out of the camshaft retianer plate. We ended up breaking it off, not a big deal we will buy a new one. Well we go to put the new cam in and its about 1" too long....WTF!!!!! We found out that you have to buy the 56-420-8 camshaft because it is the only one compatible with the balance shaft only!!! Man this sucksss. So i guess were heading to summit to pick up a new cam, cam retainer plate, and lower intake manifold gaskets

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Well heres the game plan. We decided to get the 56-450-8 camshaft since it was the only one in stock. This is the 266 AHR Cam. The only difference is the LSA and the duration is 266/270. Performance wise i doubt we will notice a difference. LESSON TO ALL FIND OUT IF YOUR CAM IS FOR BALANCE SHAFT ENGINES OR NOT!! Also to add to the list of parts to get you need to buy PAG oil and A/C Refrigerent R-134A. I would also invest in engine degreaser and brake cleaner. So now were gonna get back to work. Pics will be up tonight!

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Well today did not go as smoothly as yesterday. We started at about 11 this yesterday morning and decided to call it quits at 6am this morning. We did however make a good amount of progress. Basically all the engine components are in and ready to go. We just need to adjust the rockers and than we will be ready to start re-assembeling everything else. We hope to have it done by around 1-2pm

Hopefully he got the Felpro Intake gaskets with PermaDry. Supposedly those will last a long time. I used them on a couple 3.8's I did. Sounds like you boys are having a blast lol. Will be nice once it's done.....this makes me wanna do this.

Yes sir i did. I also took back those valve covers i have posted up in the beginning. They did not fit. Instead i got the edelbrock elite series valve covers. They look ****ing sick. Right now we are taking a break and than all we have left to do is put on the valve covers, distributor gear, and crank pulley and than just put everything back on that we took off. We will have pics up this evening and probably some videos!!! Hopefully it runs well

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

The 56-460-8 is for non balance shaft engines. I had to ge the 56-450-8 which is the 266 cam since its the only one they had in stock. I really wanted a 270 but hey you gotta do what you gotta do. Well lunch break is over. Well post up pics when were done.

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Got it all buttoned up but have nothing but trouble. IT just leaks coolant every where
We took the intake manifold back off noticed the passenger side gasket slide somehow, so we took off the gaskets scraped all the rtv off and resealed it really good, let the sealant set-up for abt an hour. We drained the oil which was full of coolant, We decided to leave the oil drain plug out over night just in case. After the sealant set-up I dumped about a half gallon of coolant into the radiator and almost instantly it all came out of the oil drain plug. Whats going on here, How can the intake not be sealing that well at all? We left the distributor out and all the wires off except the heater hoses just incase this happened again. Any help?

goodluck with the rest you 2!! can't wait for the vids

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

i used the 56-440-8(260 ahr) alot better than stock... im swapping it out for a 110 centerlobe 525/525(56-430-8), did you look into lifters? or just reuse stock? if i remember correctly the cam you installed is good for nitrous apps too... dont ask how i remeber all these numbers either to much research... well good luck and looks good...

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Hope fully the 266 AHR is still a nice cam. I mean its really almost barely any different from the 270 but i was just so excited for the 270 swap haha. But it should be alright. We are going to get new lower intake manifold gaskets and seal everything up again but we are going to let it dry pretty good before we put the intake manifold on so it forms a good seal. I think before we were torqueing down the manifold before it was really dry and it was just pushing out all the gasket maker

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

did you keep the balance shaft functional?
if so, are you sure it got timed correctly?
if not, it could be a real shaker...
not trying to insult your abilities, but it
is easy to get it wrong.

alot of work, isnt it???

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

Haha yess we kept the balance shaft functional and we timed it according to the S-10 hanes manual and so i believe we have it right.
Once were able to get the intake manifold on and torqued down right we should be able to reassemble everything we took off in about 30 mins. Than we gotta put oil in the engine since we had to drain it last night. We gotta put refigerant back into the a/c and than we will put the coolant in last. After that is should be ready to fire up

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

yeah, always lots of little things you forget to
figure in when you try to estimate how long it will take....

also, it doesnt look like you dropped your oil pan.
did you have to trim the lip back on the timing cover
before reinstalling it?

The newer plastic timing covers dont have that lip that hits the oil pan. So it bolted right on

ah, didnt know that about the new covers. i re-used my original
cover, and just cut the lip off of it. its molded fiberglass, so a
sanding drum on a dremel tool made short work of it...

We figured it out!! You have to use the MS 95817 gaskets from autozone. It works amazingly and now were are buttoning it up!! Videos and pics to come soon

Looking good, damn you guys took a lot of things off that I didn't the first time I swapped my cam in years ago! Looks like you had a lot more space to work with, the only stuff I removed was the grille/radiator/condenser!

Looks good and I bet it will sound great. I'm pretty sure the 56-460-8 will work with balance shaft engines cause it is the 270AHR grind that is computer compatible. What size bolts did you use for the valve covers?

Re: The 270 cam swap finale!!

So here is whats up...we couldnt get the truck to ****in start. We buttoned everything back up and we just cant get it to start. We figured it was the timing...sooo we redid the timing and we are pretty sure we got it perfect after like 4 tries. But we still cant get it to start...so basically my truck is gonna be sitting until friday and friday me, my cousin, and our other friend are gonna see whats going on. If we cant get it to start by like sat evening im taking it to a shop because i need my truck. I just dont understand what it could be. We checked all the wires and everythings plugged in. We checked all the grounds and looked over everything. Either we just dont have the timing right or were missing something really small or somethings ****ed up internally. It cranks over and it'll fire like once but than it just wont start. We need some suggestions to take in for this weekend so lets hear em....
