smoke on startup
I just recently picked up a 93 2wd blazer in excellent condition, only has 75000 miles on it, vortec 4.3L I had to replace the oil filter plate gasket because It had started leaking, no big deal, but after I turn it off and it sets for 3-4 hours it gives a puff of smoke, smells like oil, I've been told it was the valve stem seals, if so how long should it take to replace them? It only smokes after it sits 3-4 hours, I can leave it parked overnight and it does NOT smoke at all, I have yet to figure that one out. My money is on the valve seals, because it sat up for about 8 years without being driven, I'm thinking they are dry-rotted like the filter plate gasket was because there was no oil running over them. I just wanted some more opinons on it before I start tearing the motor down.

Re: smoke on startup
I agree on valve stem seals. I also think that you will eventually replace alomost every gasket on the truck since it sat for 8 years.

Re: smoke on startup
Just wanted to add that it's not coolant smoke because the resivoir and radiator is still full and the coolant looks good, and there's no coolant in the oil either. The exhaust pipe is clean, no soot or anything.

Re: smoke on startup
So far the filter plate was the only bad seal, it was thinner than a dime and hard as a rock, I dropped it on the floor and it shattered. lol But nothing else is leaking yet, front, or rear main and the valve covers are bone dry.

Re: smoke on startup
The hardest one to do is #3 because you usually have to disconnect the steering shaft. And you might have a compressor to deal with....
Good luck. |
