Smoke at start up 93 S10 4.3

I've been noticeing a little smoke at start up. I only have 72000 original miles. valve job already? I noticed this after a recent oil change. If a valve job is needed would I be better off finding the problem valve and repairing it or get them all done or just go with some new heads all together.

Re: Smoke at start up 93 S10 4.3

If it's a TBI or even the CPI back in 89/90 to 93 I believe GM installed the wrong valve seals. They were
the o-ring type. GM put aTSB out and I think a quiet recall out telling the dealers to change over
to the GM "umbrella" style valve seals. Mine started when I had about 65000 on it and it still does
it. once in a while. I never changed them out. I use Valvolines high mileage oil now and it doesn't
hardly do it at all anymore and I have 108, + on the speedo now..A GM screw up back in the late
80's to early 90's deal..

Re: Smoke at start up 93 S10 4.3

yeah sounds like valve seals if its only on start up. and easy fix if you got some compressed air. i think gm changed to teflon seals in 93 to solve this problem

Not necissarly bad valave seals. could be a bad ring. How much oil does the engine burn between oil changes?

Hardly any. Whenever i've checked the oil it was always right on or a little below so i'd say possibly a half quart. Do you guys use the recommended 5w40? or somthing different. I've noticed some seepage from the oil adapter underneath where it goes into the block. Is that an easy fix?

i don't understand people. how can you say this when you haven't done any diagnosis on the vehicule

first what you should do is a compression test. if you see a cylinder with compression out of spec then do a leak down test. put a few drops of oil in that cylinder(through the sparkplug hole) then do the compression test again. if the compression raises then you know you have a bad ring. If that test shows the rings are good then it is most likely your valve seals

Re: Smoke at start up 93 S10 4.3

your are rigth about perfroming a compression test cylinder leak down he has 72,000 miles on the truck i don't think he needs rings the valve seal become brittle causing oil to leak pass the valve . my truck has over 150,000 miles and it original internal parts

smoking only at start-up is 99% of the time bad valve seals , rings are generally all the time, often not noticable cruising

Re: Smoke at start up 93 S10 4.3

Doing the diag is the correct way to do it. In the meantime, I'll try and find the TSB. I made a few copies
of it off a Snap-On- Mitchell On Demand diag dics we had installed on a smog machine we had at
the shop here in SoCal..It address's this problem with the late 80 early 90's 4.3 engines when they
start the "smoke at start up" and then goes away. It points to the o-ring valve seal replacement to the
"corvette umbrella " style seal.
