rough idle and ticking

just put a 4.3 from a donor truck into mine. but heres the problem i have to give it full gas for it to start and when it does start it makes a loud tick. every little thing has been replaced but we haven't opened up the engine. i checked the timing chain wasn't loose, but i haven't got the chance to track down a timing gun and i heard from a friend that if the distributor isn't sitting right in the oil pump it also could be the problem. so what's the first thing i should do to get closer to solving my problem? any input is greatly appriciated.

Re: rough idle and ticking

missing "key information", did the engine run good before? If so(I presume) check your distributor;
1. remove #1 spark plug (drivers side-front).
2. remove all plug wires at cap, then remove cap also.
3. unplug connector at coil.
4. try to plug #1 spark plug hole with your finger while
having someone crank-bump the engine over. bringing piston to the top of compression stroke(you'll feel the pressure).
5. with flashlight, look for timing mark(keyway) cut on harmonic balance-should be fairly close, show assistant and have them guide you to right on. get under truck and turn crank using a 5/8-1/2 drive deep socket to align.
6. check rotor position to #1 on the cap(just hold cap over distributor) It's around 7:00 position I believe.
Reassemble.
As far as the oil pump shaft goes, when you remove dist. or shaft via oil pump, when the dist goes back in it usually wont "set/seat" all the way but still will be meshed with camshaft. Simply crank/bump engine and dist. will align with pump shaft and drop down the final 1/4". You may have to apply very slight downward pressure on dist. at times....
These dist. are not adjustable, the bolt locks them down.
If asking/wondering, it's a relatively painless/costfree procedure which is fast and easy and has no shortcuts. Good Luck, let us know how you made out! I just did this and finished tonight...but I went thru the donor quickly.
