Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

not enough room for the filter to be located under the block on an IFS 4x4 unless you have one of the 5 or 6 inch suspension lifts installed.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

I just did this repair , 2 hours , $15 later , this repair is a No Brainer , if you want to save some cash .

Very easy to do.

If not , buy new lines, its up to you .

It's too bad that Hotwire is Banned from here , The Guy has alot off info to Share.

There are alot of Hotwire Mods to Both of my trucks.

Thanks Jeff !!!!!!!

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

I did this mod to my 95 Blazer. I bought 10 ft of trans. line and I have enough left over to do my wife's Blazer now.

I'm extremely pleased with the outcome and I saved a wad of cash. And if the lines ever develope a leak in the future it's even simpler to repair. Just loosen a couple hose clamps and slip on some new hose, tighten hose clamps and you're done.

I would definitely recommend this to anyone needing to replace leaking oil lines.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

sockjoch, hotwire specifically states not to use tranny lines. I did however for a while with no issues but they start to feel soft/springy. Use the heavy duty oil line.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

NAPA didn't have any of the heavy duty oil line at the time. Were you using the red 250psi rated trans line? If mine start getting soft I'll get the HD oil line. At least it'll be an easy swap.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

I used approximately 4 to 4 1/2 feet of line and yes it was 1/2 inch. It was very tight going on.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

My line was "multi purpose" but is extreemly hard right now and my odo reads 183ish. Yes you are right when your order of good line rolls up, you can swap it in for the soft tranny line.

I wonder what kind of real pressures that line sees because my oil pressure gauge with 5/30 puts it in the area of 70psi on the gauge but perhaps the lines come before/after a different pressure area?

Anyhow mine are rated 250psi of OIL pressure and that is the key. I also noted that the original lines were stronger than the hand of god. It is amazing how they put aluminum crimps on steel braided nylon reinforced hoses. If only they went stainless this would never even become a problem imo.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

My old lines were very soft and much more flexible than the trans line I used.

Seeing as so many people have problems from the factory crimped lines you would think that GM would have come up with a better line or just attached them with hose clamps to start with, so they could easily be replaced at a lower cost.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

i know i am a little late to the party on this one, but this does work.
i have put on about 4000 miles with the lines this way and it works just fine.
easy enough to do as well. the whole thing cost me 16 bucks verses the 170 quoted at the part stores.

the kicker is when i talked to them about the leaking issue the reply was, "yeah but there under lifetime warranty, just bring'em back. its common for them to leak a little after time."

glad to say no leaks with the homemade method, would recommend to anyone.

thanks for the great tip.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

Very nice sticky....

I have the same problem with my '99 dime. $70 for these stupid lines? MEH!

Also...
The A/C compressor
the fuel gauge
the front suspension
the intake gasket (fixed)
the tailgate straps on my '94 fullsize (sure the ones on my dime will go soon)
the cat
the door pins and bushings (fixed on driver's door)

Yeah, glad those engineers get paid so much...wanna bring costs down?

Fire some of those morons.

I'll be doing this repair soon and, as I'm not a COMPLETE moron and I can follow simple instructions, I think it will be a very sound repair.

Thanks hotwire...

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

I just replaced my oil cooler lines on my 2000 Sonoma 2Wd today with the Dorman lines what a pain in the ass Dormans QC is the shits as the forward bolt bracket was put on ass backwards had to yard the whole set out and turn it around do get it right then getting the lines to "snap in" was a PITA as well the good folks @ Dorman just didnt make it real easy to do but I finally got it with a lil massaging with the tubing bender but they are in and no leaks on fire up either so im good to go for awhile..........

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

I posted this on my jimmy resurrection about clamps that i found, They are called Mikalor Clamps they are 5/8 wide t-bolt stainless steel clamps 17-19 mm.They have a really great bolt to tighten with, and great clamping power.Alot better than worm drive clamps.

Talking Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

180,000 miles on my original lines before they actually sprung a leak under the radiator support at the plastic clamp . of course this was during a long trip and I pretty much roasted my engine LOL!!!!
picked up a 1993 4.3 out of a full size truck and new cooler lines total cost so far $280 the new / used engine has 72,000 miles on it from a totaled truck .
Don't ya just love the S-10 's

just try to repair a ford ranger or dakota under the same circumstances for less ....

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

Just relocate the filter straight to the block all you need is a piece from a small block, to connect the filter to the block all you have to watch out for is the drive shaft clearance, shouldnt be a problem for normal driving

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

Hotwire, im planning on using the 4x4 adapter on my 2wd s10. Then i want to run lines from the remote filter threw an aftermarket oil cooler instead of using the dual cooler radiator which I dont have in the 2x4. I am running the melling hi-flo pump. What do you think about the aftermarket engine oil cooler in this situation?

Also, Im on my 3rd 4x4 s10 and all of them had the leaky factory lines. I want to fix them like you explained in your sticky. I also wanted to do the 2x4 lines in the same manner.

Thanks for the detail about the crimp.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!

cali90, Hotwire got banned for whatever reason and is gone. If you want a complete strangers opinion, the high volume pump is worthless and can actually be bad to have (I'll let you search on your own for the specifics) but you still should be fine with the line.

since this has been kicked up...

my 2nd set of doorman lines (warranty) also had the bracket on backwards... took 10 minutes of spinning it around and messing with things trying to get the holes to line up before I realized it. lol.

Hopefully the 2nd set lasts longer than the 1st; at least rockauto was kind enough to replace them under dormans warranty 3 yrs after I bought them, a definite thumbs up for that.

Having poly motor mounts sure makes changing these damn things a lot easier. Those ****in bracket cage things aren't surrounding the mounts like they are on the stock engine mounts... so I dont have to disconnect them and jack up the motor to change the lines
