Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
not enough room for the filter to be located under the block on an IFS 4x4 unless you have one of the 5 or 6 inch suspension lifts installed.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
I just did this repair , 2 hours , $15 later , this repair is a No Brainer , if you want to save some cash .
Very easy to do. If not , buy new lines, its up to you . It's too bad that Hotwire is Banned from here , The Guy has alot off info to Share. There are alot of Hotwire Mods to Both of my trucks. Thanks Jeff !!!!!!! Bob |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
I did this mod to my 95 Blazer. I bought 10 ft of trans. line and I have enough left over to do my wife's Blazer now.
I'm extremely pleased with the outcome and I saved a wad of cash. And if the lines ever develope a leak in the future it's even simpler to repair. Just loosen a couple hose clamps and slip on some new hose, tighten hose clamps and you're done. I would definitely recommend this to anyone needing to replace leaking oil lines. |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
sockjoch, hotwire specifically states not to use tranny lines. I did however for a while with no issues but they start to feel soft/springy. Use the heavy duty oil line.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
NAPA didn't have any of the heavy duty oil line at the time. Were you using the red 250psi rated trans line? If mine start getting soft I'll get the HD oil line. At least it'll be an easy swap.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
I used approximately 4 to 4 1/2 feet of line and yes it was 1/2 inch. It was very tight going on.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
My line was "multi purpose" but is extreemly hard right now and my odo reads 183ish. Yes you are right when your order of good line rolls up, you can swap it in for the soft tranny line.
I wonder what kind of real pressures that line sees because my oil pressure gauge with 5/30 puts it in the area of 70psi on the gauge but perhaps the lines come before/after a different pressure area? Anyhow mine are rated 250psi of OIL pressure and that is the key. I also noted that the original lines were stronger than the hand of god. It is amazing how they put aluminum crimps on steel braided nylon reinforced hoses. If only they went stainless this would never even become a problem imo. |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
My old lines were very soft and much more flexible than the trans line I used.
Seeing as so many people have problems from the factory crimped lines you would think that GM would have come up with a better line or just attached them with hose clamps to start with, so they could easily be replaced at a lower cost. |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
i know i am a little late to the party on this one, but this does work.
i have put on about 4000 miles with the lines this way and it works just fine. easy enough to do as well. the whole thing cost me 16 bucks verses the 170 quoted at the part stores. the kicker is when i talked to them about the leaking issue the reply was, "yeah but there under lifetime warranty, just bring'em back. its common for them to leak a little after time." glad to say no leaks with the homemade method, would recommend to anyone. thanks for the great tip. |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
Very nice sticky....
I have the same problem with my '99 dime. $70 for these stupid lines? MEH! Also... The A/C compressor the fuel gauge the front suspension the intake gasket (fixed) the tailgate straps on my '94 fullsize (sure the ones on my dime will go soon) the cat the door pins and bushings (fixed on driver's door) Yeah, glad those engineers get paid so much...wanna bring costs down? Fire some of those morons. ![]() I'll be doing this repair soon and, as I'm not a COMPLETE moron and I can follow simple instructions, I think it will be a very sound repair. Thanks hotwire... ~archi |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
I posted this on my jimmy resurrection about clamps that i found, They are called Mikalor Clamps they are 5/8 wide t-bolt stainless steel clamps 17-19 mm.They have a really great bolt to tighten with, and great clamping power.Alot better than worm drive clamps.

180,000 miles on my original lines before they actually sprung a leak under the radiator support at the plastic clamp . of course this was during a long trip and I pretty much roasted my engine LOL!!!!
picked up a 1993 4.3 out of a full size truck and new cooler lines total cost so far $280 the new / used engine has 72,000 miles on it from a totaled truck . Don't ya just love the S-10 's just try to repair a ford ranger or dakota under the same circumstances for less .... ![]() |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
Just relocate the filter straight to the block all you need is a piece from a small block, to connect the filter to the block all you have to watch out for is the drive shaft clearance, shouldnt be a problem for normal driving

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
Hotwire, im planning on using the 4x4 adapter on my 2wd s10. Then i want to run lines from the remote filter threw an aftermarket oil cooler instead of using the dual cooler radiator which I dont have in the 2x4. I am running the melling hi-flo pump. What do you think about the aftermarket engine oil cooler in this situation?
Also, Im on my 3rd 4x4 s10 and all of them had the leaky factory lines. I want to fix them like you explained in your sticky. I also wanted to do the 2x4 lines in the same manner. Thanks for the detail about the crimp. |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
cali90, Hotwire got banned for whatever reason and is gone. If you want a complete strangers opinion, the high volume pump is worthless and can actually be bad to have (I'll let you search on your own for the specifics) but you still should be fine with the line.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
since this has been kicked up... my 2nd set of doorman lines (warranty) also had the bracket on backwards... took 10 minutes of spinning it around and messing with things trying to get the holes to line up before I realized it. lol. Hopefully the 2nd set lasts longer than the 1st; at least rockauto was kind enough to replace them under dormans warranty 3 yrs after I bought them, a definite thumbs up for that. Having poly motor mounts sure makes changing these damn things a lot easier. Those ****in bracket cage things aren't surrounding the mounts like they are on the stock engine mounts... so I dont have to disconnect them and jack up the motor to change the lines |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
Mine are leaking, have been for the last few thousand miles : (
Anyhow I am going to replace the line with the same stuff I had because I think it was the clamps and not the line itself. O and I have just under 201K so I think I put about 40K on the lines. The worm style clamps need more BALLS so I'm going to look into the above posters recommendation and see whats what. Will report back asap! |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
so as far as how bad mine were leaking...heres a pic for a general idea...lol
![]() and after taking off my oil filter...wow...im ****ed ![]() i was going to just delete my oil cooler lines in all, but after taking the first bolt out no problem, i managed to strip the 2nd one...so i was like wow wtf?!?! i sprayed the shit with liquid wrench twice before i even tried and let it sit for like 5-10 mins each time... so now i just replaced my linesfor the time being, they only have to work for a good couple months and thats it, that's if my motor can even mange to keep on truckin to and back from work til i pay off my motor ...glad i got a milkshake for oil now though...makes me feel great. ![]() and btw, this whole process was fairly easy...i actually ended up taking the oil cooler lines off completely, from the remote oil filter adapter, to the radiator, cut the bitch in half where the rubber hoses are, and replaced the hoses with new ones and double clamped those ****ers! haha....seems to be working just fine for now.. and also...if anyone ever has any trouble tryin to take off a stuck oil filter, after 2 or 3 unsuccessful tries at taking it off, i put on 2 pieces of sandpaper back to back and wrapped it inside the oil filter wrench onto the filter to get a nice good grip, came out no problem. lol...thank god too. |

Thanks to Hotwire. Your repair did the trick for me. I have a 95 S10 4X4 and it was next to impossible to remove the rear part of the oil cooler line. I chose to try your repair as an alternative. So far it's holding up well. Thanks again.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
Help a newbie out here. I'm purchasing a 98 s10 this weekend... 2wd,4.3, 5speed. This forum has been my crash course on S10's. I didn't know this problem existed, and would have never thought to look for it.
So if you guys could help me out a bit... Is this a problem on ALL 4.3's, all years, 2wd or 4wd? or just a few specific models? The pix are gone on the O.P. Could someone post more so I know what to look for and what this mod looks like when finished? |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
jack up your truck and crawl underneath, the lines connected to where your oil filter is, go to the radiator, driver side. theres a bracket holding them on in the middle held on by one bolt you'll have to take off which is no big deal...i don't know how many people do it but, i completely took my lines all the way out, cut the rubber part in the middle in half on both so i could take the lines off from each side alot easier....cut them off near the clamps, put the new rubber hose on, double clamped them on both sides on both hoses, installed the ones on the radiator first, ran the hose back where they were, put the other end of the lines in on the oil filter adapter bullshit, then in the middle, clamped them together with 2 hose clamps on each and called it a job....it really wasn't that hard.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
You better fix the coolant leak into your oil before you wipe out the bottom end. 2WD you could delete the oil cooler but 4x4, I wouldn't, they put it there because the engine is so cramped, this also helps the engine run cooler and the oil last longer. |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
haha ya i know huh....my new motor is almost done, it can't be an intake gasket cuz that was just replaced a year maybe year and a half ago...but my new motor is 2 weeks away from being home, im paying half of the 700 i owe left on it tomorrow, and then in 2 weeks when i get paid again ill finish that thing up...and bring it where it belongs...im just gonna run my truck til it dies i guess...i assume its a head gasket, but wouldn't my truck be running worse? and then constantly get worse? is there a slight chance i could have gotten water in through my oil cooler lines? trust me, i put them off for as long as possible and near the end they were leaking so god damn bad....i got a picture to prove it...lol....
sorry jesus that is a big pic...my bad! |

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
I am wondering if you could use steel braided line just to fancy it up a little that is what I am thinking of doing and then using the blue and red hydro fittings and tap and thread the adapter for the part that goes between the filter and block.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
Braided hoses and Earl's fittings? I think the OP did this to help out the po' boys like me and most of the other guys on this forum. I guess this is the "budget" repair to your leaking oil cooler lines.
But, yes, to answer your question you could definitely use braided hoses and fitting and probably won't have to worry about leaks for a long time. |

Yeah I just spent a lot of money on my motor build so don't want to go cheap on anything unless that is the only thing they make which isn't the case on oil coolers.

Re: Repair your leaking oil cooler lines!
here is exactly what i did, since i dont have any pictures to show ya ill explain it the best i can...
jacked up the truck, unscrewed the 2 bolts holding on the oil cooler line to the oil filter adapter....went to the middle of the oil cooler lines, noticed a bracket holding the lines in place on the frame, took the bolt holding that off, went to the radiator...found the other end of the 2 oil cooler lines, took them off...so now i have the whole setup off the truck...leaked some oil but thats ok...can always clean it up... then...took a pipe cutter and cut off the ends shortly after the black hose stopped, cut the new pieces of the new oil cooler hose i had for it to a lil longer than the old ones, and double clamped each on to the end closest to the radiator before installing it all back on...i then put the oil cooler lines back into the radiator, and the opposite ends of the cooler lines back into the oil filter adapter, leaving the middle section of the lines d/c, that get thrown onto the oil filter side of the lines...lubed the last 2 lines up and double clamped those onto that other end....and put the lines back through the lil bracket and bolted it back to the frame...called it a job...haven't leaked yet...its only been several weeks though....lol hope that helps, im not the best at explaining things, but i took the whole oil cooler line setup off thinking it'd be easier to not have to work from underneath the truck the whole time...goodluck |
