Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
i jsut did this mod today and i had the same problem idle high, i realized you have to plug those holes that the rivets came out of, bc i had an extra one from another intake i have and i just cut around the rivets to leave em in and i out that one in and it ran fine, so either put new rivets in the holes or aluminum weld or solder maybe

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
so i did this today, truck ran great.... decided to go out and hammer on it for awhile and ended up blowing my fuel line off at the fuel filter below my drivers door. not sure why this happened, got it back together enough to limp it home then got some new clips and got it back together.... just wish i knew why it happened.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
I did the same mod yesterday to my 98, but I also descreened the maf and opened up the stock air box also. i will say throttle response it there. But I am unsure on any power gains. I just wanted the quicker throttle response and I know it was because of the lip removed.
I also cut mine off with tin snips with no problems. Make a whole bunch of cuts from outside going towards the tb blade itself and than cut away all the tabs. |

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
so i definitely only had a sawsall sittin around and used that but i dont have that little nipple on there so i could just hack it off. i also just left the rivets in there. im doing a marine intake and just figured that i might as well do the mod while i was at it!

hey guys, i also did this mod today...took me twenty minutes also
i have had my truck for a year now, it is a 96 sonoma 4.3. Throttle response is alot better, and the truck doesnt lag with the AC on anymore. I recommend this mod to everyone. Along with my cold air intake, and exhaust system I am definately happy I am also looking into a hypertech power programmer, a high flow cat, and possibly hedders or something, and I will be ordering my cragar soft 8's soon. If any of you have a performance chip, I would also appreciate it if you could let me know of any improvements at allSincerly Nick |

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
OK guys I did this mod and put it all back together. I drill out the rivets and put in new bolts with red loctite. I maintained my idle of about 600 rpms at operating temp. Little bit better acceleration so not bad. My problem tho, is that I have a high wine coming from the TB. I put it all back together with a new gasket and I am getting this annoying wine that "makes me want to punch infants". Really high pitched! It will be there for about a minute then disappear for maybe 10 seconds at cruising speed, then it will come back. Anyone have any idea? ALso vacuum lines are good and solid. 01 4.3L auto

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
It's probably just the air whistling, and if it is then the only way to fix it would probably be to put an OE blade back on it.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
So I opened up my TB took a quick glance at the TB blade and to my surprise there was no restrictor to be found. And yes I have the correct engine/year for this. I'm also the first and only owner of this truck. So go figure.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
It is the only variable that has changed. I went and picked up a used throttle body assembly at the pick n pull for 10$. Gonna put it on and see if it changes. If the noise goes away I am going to take it back off and clean it up and just cut the flap off, not drill out the holes. Will keep yall updated. Dillon |

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
so i went ahead and did it, i left my rivet gun at work so i left the holes open from drilling them out. Not a good idea. i would start my idle at 1200+ and it would fall at about 1k. and i would gain enough speed to hit about 50 55mph on the highway WITHOUT TOUCHING THE THROTTLE!! haha well i fixed it and now it all better, i like the response i get from it.
one more thing, does everyones blade have that nipple looking thing on it? mine is missing so i have a hole there as well just wondeing if i should plug it up as well. |

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
to gain power on the topend you would have to put a cold air intake on and a high flow MAF sensor and housing because these 2 parts restrict the airflow almost as much as the stock throttle blade but aftermarket throttle bodys build 8-15 more horsepower so this mod builds power as well and the better gas milage depends on how you drive

You don't need a high flow MAF.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
as far as you 4.3 liter not haveing the baffle it was either change to aftermarket blade already,gm also offered a high flow throttle body that may be the case here or the thin alum baffle ripped threw the rivets and fell in the plenium witch is possible i had it happen once they get loose the air will tear it off eventually.when it happened to mine it idled high and set codes p0507 and p01509 the baffel didn't make it into the cylinders thank god but did make me some work.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
Is your TB off? If not...pull it and try whatever you can to get it out.
If you cant... drill it and find another screw :/ My bit got stuck in it somehow... and i had to pull the entire TB off. Didnt want to risk the bit coming out and droping into the engine. Last edited by circa : 11-04-2009 at 11:30 PM. |

Has anyone had any trouble with the SES light coming on after the throttle plate mod? Or does the computer automatically learn the new air flow and adjust for it?

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
Just joined this site... I just did this mod on my 2002 GMC Sierra 4.3 and now the throttle sticks when the truck has been turned off for awhile and you turn the truck on and shift into reverse or drive. It sticks in the un- depressed position causing me to peel out on my first take off. I thought I might have tightened the torx bolts too tight, so I backed off on them and it still does it.
If I press the gas a few times before I start the truck it is good. I just cut the lip off and left a little tiny lip, did not do anything with the rivets or nipple. I love this mod, it is awesome, except for the sticking throttle. Thanks, Brad |

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
It seems to have fixed itself. Haven't had any more problems. It does seem like it isn't as strong at higher speeds like 70+. Maybe it is just because the lower end is that much improved and the top end is in my head.

Alright, its doing it again. It only seems do to it when it is cold and raining from take off and I can kinda feel it when going at slow speeds. I guess I'll just make sure there are no burrs or anything and sand some more.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
I fixed it this time. I took it apart, cleaned the inside of the intake and tightened the torx bolts tight. I also adjusted the throttle linkage. I believe it was due to the carbon buildup causing the throttle blade to bind. It was very interesting when I was just driving along and my rpm's stuck at 3500. I had to put the truck in neutral with the parking brake on, pop the hood and manually close the throttle.

This thread is hilarious with the number of failures involved LOL, It's such an easy mod.
Undo the throttle hat with your hands, take out the torx screw, Take the blade out, grid off the lip, put it back. der. |

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal
Well, I did mine almost a year and a half ago, and the truck and I are still happy with this free and easy mod.
Just a little advice and help for those who are thinking about this but are concerned with what they have read earlier in the thread about the possibility of the engine running lean in certain cylinders as a result of this mod... I pull my spark plugs every year in the fall to check the overall running condition of my engine, and just recently pulled them. I didn't remember this thread or I would have snapped pictures. But the results were that all six spark plugs were a nice healthy color. NONE of the cylinders are running lean, and after a year and a half it would definitely show. I'm afraid the posts in here saying that this would cause some kind of engine damage are simply spreading misinformation. There is no possible harm that could come from doing this mod. In fact, if I have time I'll pull them again sometime soon and post pictures to end the whole 'debate'. The short of it is to go ahead and cut away, you'll be happy, and so will your truck. . . . |
