HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

Ok so i had the day off so i decided to try the Throttle Body Blade removal. First and foremost this does not add any HP!!! All it does is is give you much better acceleration. Ok well lets start this with a list of tools you'll be needing...

T15 Torx Bit
Brake Parts cleaner
Dremel or other cutting tool
Adjustable Wrench
Vice or Clamp
Sandpaper or File
LocTite thread locker

Now the first step is to remove the air intake. Its held on by a clamp by the throttle body. After its removed it should look like this.

Now that we have it like this its time to remove those Torx screws. There are 2 of them. You can see them it the middle. Now once you have them removed. Grab the throttle cable bracket and pull it to WOT (Wide Open Throttle) like so.
It should look like this. (After Pic)

Then Pull out the Throttle blade and it should look like this when its out. It will be very dirty and most likely have lots of carbon buildup.

Now its time to cut. You need to cut along the red line pictured above. Then after you get done cutting file or sand down the burrs left from cutting. This is what you will be left with...its trash now.

And now is the time to clean the blade with brake cleaner. I just sprayed it on and wiped it off with a clean rag. Here is what you should have when you done.

Now its time to put everything back. The throttle blade will slide in the way it came out. Make sure you put it back the way it came out. Apply some LocTite to the Torx screws and put them back in. Don't tighten them has tight as you can...if you do it can stick. It should look like this when your done.

Then just reinstall your Air intake and now enjoy your much improved acceleration. When i did mine it made a HUGE difference. Acceleration is much smother and it got rid of the lag when i hit the gas. i recommend it to every S10 owner.
If this is good enough I would like to see it made a Sticky so we don't have a new thread about this every week.

He was trying to say, if you over tighten the screws the throttle might stick

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

In my opinion, it's better to just pull that whole flimsy thing off of the blade, pulling the rivets through the holes, and then have the two holes welded up. That's what I did, and I don't have that flat thin piece laying parallel to the under side of the blade.

If you can weld aluminum, or can get it done by someone else, it'd be a cleaner, better way to do it.

I removed the diffuser, but instead of welding the holes up, I just put new rivets in them.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

96+ at least.
I just did it on my 96 at lunch break. Only takes 20 min.
Drilling out rivets and putting rivets back in is much better. The two holes left behind (if you didn't put too big a drill bit through) is 13/64 in size.

Fixed. Welding them up, is "better". But new rivets is just fine also, and for the level of difficulty, probably the more practical solution. I just happened to have a guy handy who could weld AL, so I went that route.

I wouldn't trust the solder method. Seems like that's just asking for solder pieces down into your engine.

I haven't taken mine apart yet, but the OP says nothing about any rivets. What rivets are you guys talking about re-riveting/welding?

Look at the pics in post#1. There are 4 holes in the throttle blade. 2 are for the torx screws that hold the blade to the shaft. The other 2 holes are what is left after you grind down the rivets holding the diffuser and remove the diffuser and rivet stubs. Gotta plug the last 2 or it will mess with your idle speed.

Good info, especially on the rivet size. Now for the question I have always wondered, why did GM even put that there in the first place?

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

It restricts the airflow at low throttle opening so that the accelerator is not so "touchy". It prevents taking off too fast.

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

probably the same reason as it was on my 1st gen 2.5l, it had some tube that restricted air intake for driveability or sometihng.

probably have this on there for driveability so its easier to hit the gas down without drag racing it.

i just did this to my 2000 gmc jimmy 4x4, took about 20 minutes to pull around the block, get the air tank full of air, and clean it off.

i played wit the torx screws to see how tight they were, and tightened them down tight with loctite, but not overdone, blade moves freely.

went out and i could feel an accelerational difference right away.
coupled with a cut airbox, it actually sounds fast and feels fast.

recommend it to all!

i think i was in luck with mine, the only carbon buildup was on the cup part itself and a small chunk on the back bottom.

Thumbs up Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

i did this and i like the lower rpm shift i get

before with a couple of mm of gas paddle = shift @ 3000 - 3500 rpm
After = shift @ 2000 - 3000 rpm

* this is just cruising speed* (the i don't want to push down the gas paddle because i dont want to break the egg under it) driving

Re: HOW TO: TB Blade Removal

and yogi is right on the touchy.

before and after, is a big diffrence.

before it wasnt touchy at all.

now.. its really touchy.

i go to take off and if i dont baby it out of the hole, the front end starts to lift like im halfway to popping a wheelie.

pretty funny sometimes.

for $0 and 20 minutes, its not all that hard, since its aluminum it can be done with just a handfile and more time.

took longer to remove it than to modify it.

but i think it would help MPG because you can get more air at lower rpm
& like i said before your shift are at lower rpm (A/T)

that would be the only thing i would worry about is the mpg, it's not that great as it is to begin with. has anybody checked to see if you get better or worse?

Ditto!

Also, in regards to the OP, if it makes the truck accelerate faster by adding more air and creating a more free flowing intake, it is in fact adding horsepower. It's a similar effect to adding a CAI, except this TB mod actually works apparently.

Now only if we can determind how it effects MPG.
