Fuel Lines

Well I reckon I learned not to leave the truck sitting without fenders and inner fenders . Some jackass kid had loosended the fuel lone on the TBI and crimped the metal line when he done it , bad thing is It overheated also , looked like mud in the radiator . Got danged kids .
So my question is I am pulling the motor now sense it overheated so bad and guess go for a rebuild after all the work I put into it over the past month . Will I have to replace the metal fuel line or can I cut the crimped part and add a pressure gauge or something , it is the line on the driver side back of the TBI on my 89 .

Re: Fuel Lines

Just cut out the crimped portion and reconnect the 2 lines with a tubing union. Get Swagelok fittings if you can find them.

Re: Fuel Lines

You can more then likely use a union to fix it, the pressure gauge if I'm not mistaken goes on the return line on tbi's.

Re: Fuel Lines

I didn't think that the return line would show any pressure since the fuel is just free flowing back to the tank???

Re: Fuel Lines

Since the regulator is inside of the TBI, the pressure on the return will be zero, or close to it, so the gauge needs to be on the supply side. Now if you put an external regulator on, that would go on the return, and the gauge would go on either the supply side or the return side before the reg.

Re: Fuel Lines

What size line is it ? I will just fix it for now . Picking up a350 to rebuild for it in a couple weeks . Guess that will be my new project , that is what I was originally going for anyways but decided against it . But I guess this 4.3 isn't workin out for me .

Re: Fuel Lines

well the crimp is right in the bend , so could I cut it out and use a rubber fuel line to fix it ??? The only way to use a union is to find a 45deg angle one and no luck on that

Re: Fuel Lines

Since it is low pressure (TBI) you could use rubber fuel hose. I would want to flare the ends of the tube to keep the rubber tubing from sliding off. Or, you could install hose barb fittings on the cut off ends of the metal tubing. Or, you could bend a new piece of metal tubing at a 45* angle and use 2 tubing unions to reconnect.

Re: Fuel Lines

next time, use a wrench on the line nut, and a wrench on the fitting that goes to the injector, then the line wont twist.

lemme see if i can bend one up for ya, i have the flaring tool for that stuff too.

Re: Fuel Lines

Dorman Products sells fuel line pc's that you can graph
in. It will have the proper flare for the o-ring, etc.
You bend and cut it to fit.

This is a 2.8 isn't it ?

Re: Fuel Lines

The repair line I lined to will work fine. It even comes
with it's own bender spring tool. Any GOOD auto parts
store should carry Dorman or can get it.

Re: Fuel Lines

im looking for the dorman number now......

that was my solution also.

just bend it so it goes over the back of the intake, and down close to where the original line went.

Re: Fuel Lines

I went to Oreily and got a peice of rubber 3/8 ID fuel line Last night and a pack of Fuel Injection fuel line clamps . Used a tubing cutter and cut out the bad line and pushed the rubber line on and used 2 of the above clamps . It works fine , no leaks .
Grand total spent was $2. 38

Re: Fuel Lines

Did you use regular fuel line or fuel injection hose? The regular line will hold up but it tends to swell from what I hear.

Re: Fuel Lines

Reg fuel line . This truck only gets started and idles , only time it moves is if I move it round the yard or test drive down the road for now. Bed is off and so is front clip .
I will redo all the fuel lines before it goes on the street as a driver
