FPR going out the door???

within the past id say 3-4 days, i my blazer cranks for a little bit then starts. i noticed it at first cause i went to start it and it cranked for about 5 seconds. so i stopped. and cranked again and it started right up like normal. i know if it sits for atleast 4 hours it will do it. so i just went out and started it after sitting about 5 hours and cycled the key 3 times and it started up like normal.

is this my fuel pressure regulator? fuel pump? something else? any help, id like to fix the problem now before it gets to the point where im broke down somewhere.

Re: FPR going out the door???

Wait a minute, have you checked the fuel pressure key on engine off when cold (when it would crank long?)

Does the fuel pump run when you first turn the key to run?

Have you checked the fuel pump relay?

What year is your truck?

Have you checked the fuel pump grounds to the frame rail?

Have you replaced the fuel filter yet?

Re: FPR going out the door???

http://store.getgmparts.com/fuel-pumps.html For pump prices maybe.
www.rockauto.com or www.acdelco.com for part #'s

Should be around 60 key on engine off. (will drop a little when running as injectors are firing and lowering pressure slightly.

The Oil pressure sender will run the pump after the engine developes pressure (about 4 PSI).

I would buy a filter and replace that before I even had the pressure checked, leaving a bad filter on can cause a pump to fail, so can running tank empty all the time. Just FYI. :-)

Re: FPR going out the door???

if it sits overnight and i check it in the morning before cranking again should it still show around 60? or do i need to let pump cycle once before checking?

and yeah, i run my tank dry usually lol.. its got 1/4 tank right now.

Re: FPR going out the door???

OK i went out and checked the fuel pressure.

i hooked up the gauge, turned the key to on position, fuel pressure went up to 58psi, then bled down to 57psi.

then i shut key off and let it cycle one more time and it went up to 58 psi and stayed there. so i started it, but stayed in this like half idle/ half wanting to die stage for about 5 seconds, then i gave it a little gas and it idled fine. the psi was 56 when running.

then i shut it off, and then cycled the key one more time and the fuel pressure sat at 60psi.

Re: FPR going out the door???

56 running isnt bad either (is lower because injectors are opening.) When you go to crank it (cold, would act up) can you hold pedal to floor (flood clear mode) if you have a leaky spider or FPR it could be flooding you out causing your rough running/ hard starting.

so i need to let it sit atleast 4ish hours to where i know it will do it again and turn the key on to let it cycle once, and then crank it with the pedal to the floor? and by doing that it will let me know if i have a leaky spider or my fpr.

wheres the spider thing? under the intake?

Re: FPR going out the door???

The Spider is the Fuel Injector setup that houses the injectors and has little tubes that run to poppet valves at the end that are stuck into the intake runners (looks like a fat spider), the FPR is the Fuel Pressure Regulator (diaphram is notorious for getting a pin hole and leaking), the Spider assembly would come with a new FPR and the new ones convert the CSFI to a MPFI setup (instead of the poppet valves you have actual injectors at the end of the legs). But you need to see what is going on first as it is around $300 also.

Re: FPR going out the door???

How does she run at higher RPMs, some people are having issues with top end RPMs when spider is bad, (FYI the FPR is available separate from the spider). To really check and see you would have to pull everything apart (top of intake and see if there are some clean spots.)

And you may have something totally differnt than this wrong.

Re: FPR going out the door???

That almost sounds like a leaky FPR, can you take the tube off the intake, open the throttle and look down in with aflashlight and see if there is a clean area? Should be alot of black gunk around, but if you see a clean spot it is probably getting cleaned by raw fuel.

Re: FPR going out the door???

Depends upon the pressure and the flow characteristics, but I guess if you find one that will work it would work.

Re: FPR going out the door???

Chris -

You've got good pressure at key on engine off. It drops to 50 when you start cranking. That looks like it could be a wiring problem. Looks like the pump is not getting enough power while cranking.

I would check the fp ground on the frame rail - driver's side. Take the connection apart and sand all surfaces, reassemble.

Next, disconnect the fp wiring harness and look at the plugs real close. Look for dirt, corrosion, or a burned connection. Clean if necessary and try the gauge test again.

Also try changing the fp relay with another known good relay in the box.

The way that the pressure is in the vid, I'd be afraid that a new pump would do the same thing.

you were showing prices for entire fp modules, get the pump number while u have it apart and buy just the pump, u dont need a whole module, i dont think u would.

Re: FPR going out the door???

well thats just my luck.. i go to drop the tank to check out all the wiring, it all checks out fine, go to jack it up and somehow the tank slipped off the jack and ripped all 3 lines off with part of the fuel pump.. so i had no choice but to go buy a fuel pump. bought one from advance. one year warranty. not one i wanted but its my only vehicle so i had to do something. ill let it sit for a while and hopefully that was the problem. this one is alot quieter.

Re: FPR going out the door???

i still have the problem i did.. i havent got around to checking the pressure. i have a new fuel filter for it, so im going to change that tomorrow and check the pressure. i was real lazy today. figured might as well be, dont get paid mondays off alot lol..

but it runs like normal when started. i cleaned the frame to bare metal for the grounds. the connections are good. ill make a video of it starting tomorrow morning. it may not be bad, but it used to not crank as long as it does before starting.

so i will report back with updates around lunch time tomorrow..
