Ebay cold air intake?
What do you guys think about an ebay cold air intake? I know it would be kind of ghetto but it should do the same job as a $300 one right. Im thinking if a get a k&n wrap I should be safe right? (I think theyre called wraps lol)
Should be some good, cheap horsepower. |

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
They work great and do what they were intended for. I would rather use a K&N filter over the one that comes with it though like you said. Try it out.

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
people said the k&n air filter, because they're so greasy and oily will dirty up the maf sensor faster causing problems...i got a 30 dollar ebay cai on mine.....it's throttle response is better but it's actually a lil bit quieter than when i had my stock airbox in with a hole cut out the side...i like the sound of that better than the CAI, but the butt dyno likes the CAI better....there's some kinda heat shield/wrap thing on ebay for like 20 bucks you can use too...?

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
I picked up a Spectre intake which is the same as the $60 full intakes on the other thread and is the same as the AEM intake for about $300 more. I thought it was the same as the K&N but I forgot K&N has that crap ass clamped on piece at the TB which kept coming off when I had one on my Xtreme. With only an intake you'll lose a little bottom end torque but will gain some mid and top end power. You need an exhaust to take full advantage of the intake. That's next on my list in the spring.

Found a how to!
Just types in "make your own cold air intake". First thing that came up was for a 4.3 blazer ![]() Looks like a good idea! http://s702.photobucket.com/albums/w...view=slideshow What do you guys think about this one? Save up $60 and get one of the real complete kits with a heat shield. Cheap ain't always cheap when it's junk parts.

I bought this one:
http://rover.ebay.com/ar/1/711-53200...4&toolid=10001 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150409233355 I was very impressed. Heat shield is solid, the intake tube is 100% better than the cheezy stock tube with 1 plastic nut, and I definentally notice a difference. I also bought a modified throttle body butterfly ($40) that doesn't have the huge baffle on the back, and with these two upgrades I have noticed a difference in response and mileage (when i'm not driving like an ass ) . I have an '00 ZR2 which are notoriously thirsty, and I logged 19mpg highway a few weeks ago with a cap w/ racks and a snowblower in the back. My buddy has a '99 ZR2 andcan't get any better than 13mpg! I've blown $100 bucks and gotten a lot less more times than I care to think!PS: if you put one on, just don't over oil it, or you'll shxt up your MAF(learned from experience, you can clean w/BC though) Last edited by gmjunkie : 01-31-2010 at 11:01 PM. |

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
and this time when i cleaned the MAF instead of just blasting BC into it, i took it apart, it's just 4 torx bolts and was able to spray the resistors off really well.just be careful if you take it apart, pay attention to how it comes apart (it's keyed, but still save yourself the headache). i think mine kept messing up because there is a track where the BC can pool up if you don't take it apart, so when I put it back on all the crap was just running back onto the bridge circut. but if you're noticing hesitation at takeoff or throwing lean ses codes, than cleaning the MAF is a cheap easy solution.I can't take full credit for the solution though, s15vortecpwr sugested it to me when I posted about my hesitation issue. Also my buddy did what you were taking about and just cut the baffle off the throttle body valve, but I was willing to spend $40 and not risk flecks of metal being sucked into my intake. Plus i'm learning not to half ass stuff in my old age, as it always seems to come back and haunt me. But to each there own.Good luck with your mods! |

I got mine from Chromeintakes (from Ebay) for like $30 bucks. It didn't come with a heat shield (I thought it did) but whatever. Didn't notice anything but I didn't expect to either.

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
Could you maybe try and find out what is missing, if its something I can get at home depot, then ill do it but im not gonna go through the hassle of making some weird plastic peice. BTW does anyone think one of these things will ever pay themselves back in gas mileage? |

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
Its possible depending on how you drive. Theres a member on here that made his own intake and gave a few to other members to try. One of them even made a thread about how the install was and what he thought about it. He gained mpg with it. The think DAVEMAN was the creator of it

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
You shouldn't clean the MAF with brake cleaner. It's pretty corrosive stuff. Either get electronics cleaner or specific MAF cleaner. Someone told me to use brake cleaner a long time ago and I did it once but thought it was pretty harsh stuff to use on a delicate electronic sensor. I found MAF cleaner for about $5 or $6 for a can and I've done several now and it's not even half empty.

30 is a little cheap from what i paid lol the only thing its really missing is the piece that like bolts the front air intake tube to the truck. its like a rubber thing. u see the bracket thing on the metal tube? thats where it went. other than that i have everything else.. the screw the heat shield came with and the pieces to bolt the air intake to the trottle body. i believe it may be sold already.. |

I have it on my stock truck. It gives a bit more mid range power but you lose a bit of bottom end. I need a new exhaust this spring to take better advantage of it.

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
Ive got exhaust, stock y pipe though, and the throttle body mod. I put my stock intake on for smog and i noticed the power loss. These ebay intakes do not have the carb sticker so it should not pass visual inspection. Thats in cali, not sure about other states.

The Spectre intake I have that I got for $60 which is the same as these is CARB exempt and came with the sticker. I think I even have a spare sticker from the other kit I bought that was missing parts.

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
I had a crap ton of issues with the cheap ebay intake on my SS/SC 'balt. put it on, sounded cool for the first 5 min of revving it up, then it decided to fall on its ass over 4K RPM. Turns out the MAF is super sensitive on that car and the intake didnt like.
Lesson: cheap ebay intakes are not engineered, they are just crappy copies of engineered intakes |

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
Most ebay intakes are just a pipe with a big filter stuck on the end. This kit is actually used by AEM and Spectre which both test them. The others are copies since at least the Spectre is made in China and we all know how the Chinese love to copy everything.

And we have NO inspection at all, which is cool I guess, but I still wanna move to cali. I have a smashed y pipe thats half welded if thatll make a difference. Its got a little hole now so it pops when i let off the gas and sounds like a badass civic lol |

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
For a air intake if you wanna do like what i did you might find it even better.. I waited till i found a good deal on a used K&N cold air intake and bought it. Or you could buy the cheap one and get a K&N later on and always sell the cheaper one on here to someone looking for one. lol |

Re: Ebay cold air intake?
Used K&N's are still $100 or more and has a dirty filter and might be missing parts from the ones I have seen. I'd rather spend $60 on a brand new kit.
