code help p0446

have a 99 gmc sonoma with 4.3l v6 that has code 0446. replaced the evap vent valve, the one near the spare tire at the rear. rest code and drove 100+ miles; filled the tank and got an additional 25 miles before code came back. can anybody shed some light on this for me?

thanks in advance

***Hint*** #1 is what you should be doing with all newer vehicles.
In another thread I posted the questions above...your problem can be a result of #2

These valves were designed to process fuel VAPOR not raw liquid fuel.

Gasoline (liquid) destroys the valves and their components.

That's why you need to follow #1 above to avoid this happening.

Re: code help p0446

Many times a loose and or old gas cap can set Evap codes as well.

Do a search here using code 0446

Re: code help p0446

finally broke down and had it inspected by a shop. was told the Fuel Tank Pressure sensor needs to be replaced, or check the wiring. Does this make sense?

the four components that it could be due to the end of the pinpoint
diagnostic sheet is Evap Vent Valve, Evap Vapor Canister, and Fuel Tank
Pressure Sensor, and then replacement of the VCM.

so if you already replace the vent valve, and a TECHINCAN stated its a Fuel pressure Sensor, Me being a service advisor at a dealership here in TX, thats what they get paid doing is to fix cars, then i would agree that it would be a fuel pressure sensor.

Re: code help p0446

I also have this code I am planning on cleaning the valve first to see if that resolved the problem. My question is will this problem cause the engine to bog down on occasion or is there something else amiss. So far this the P0446 is the only code that is displaying.

Re: code help p0446

i'v got the same problem and will be looking into it. do you have to to drop the tank to get to the pressure sensor?

And i'v been filling the fuel literally up to the nexk so I understand this happening now.

Re: code help p0446

Gah! The dreaded SES light... Sadly I am in the same boat - P0446 among other codes...

P0446 - Evaporative Emmission Control System Vent Control Circuit
P0441 - Evaporative Emission Control System Incorrect Purge Flow
P0101 - Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor or circuit fault

Well I figured I'd start cheap and work my way up to more expensive parts. Today - I replaced the Purge Solenoid Valve attached to the canister, Fuel Filter, Air Filter and sprayed out the MAF with MAF cleaner.

(decided to do the throttle plate mod too since I had the air inlet off )

Got it all buttoned up - reconnected the battery - fired right up no problems...until the *&^%'n SES light came back on after about 5 minutes. Gonna scan it again tomorrow and see what comes up...

Re: code help p0446

Scanned it - now I have these:

P0449 - Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Valve/Solenoid Circuit Malfunction
P0452 - Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor Circuit Low Input Conditions

At least the MAF one is gone and I'm slowly closing in on the emissions system problem. I really don't know why I would get a 449 since i just replaced the vent valve... I'm going to do a front to back check of all the wires (make sure none of them got chaffed or damaged). Also going to try replacing the fuel tank pressure sensor next. Ill keep you all posted.

The Fuel Pressure sensor is located right on top of the fuel pump. Might be easier to simply raise the bed vice dropping the tank - I have the tiny crew cab bed so that's what I'll be doing

Re: code help p0446

Replaced the Fuel Pressure Sensor. Didn't help - still reading P0449 and P0452. I have absolutely no idea where to go from here - what the hell am I missing? The truck idles and drives just fine - doesn't shake or run funny. I'm running out of ideas.

I was able to get to it without dropping the tank or lifting the bed on the crew. I just removed the inner fender plastic on the driver side and it was right there. I was also able to access it by reaching it from underneath over the driveshaft.

It's not likely to be a vacuum leak simply because the truck runs and drives just fine - a vacuum leak anywhere would surely cause the engine to run like crap - speaking from past experiences. However, I guess I can't rule it out at this point. Maybe new intake gaskets are in order...

.

Hopefully once the new purge valve is installed I can clear those P0449 and P0452 codes and finally get the SES light to STAY OFF. I guess it's good to replace all these parts anyway - after all its 10+ year old truck.

Re: code help p0446

Still reading P0449 and P0452... Everything emissions related has been replaced -

Now "Check Gauges" light came on - overheated. Popped the hood and discovered a coolant leak somewhere near the thermostat - 1 gallon low on coolant - still have to isolate the leak.

Ordered an intake gasket kit, new thermostat, and new coolant, flush kit. - Ugh it's one thing after another! FML

Getting more motivated to yank this ungrateful 4.3 out and throw an LS1/LS6 in it.
