Better way to change starter

Is there an easier way to change the starter than dropping it a little bit and twisting it for 20 minutes trying to get to the wires?

Can you unbolt the inner wheel well to get better access to it?

Re: Better way to change starter

I find it is a lot easier to change it with the motor out.

What year truck? I can get to my wires through the wheel well, with part of the well gone.

Re: Better way to change starter

the starter will be to far back to reach from the wheel well, and the transmission and short cords will make it hard to get out from that angle. your best bet would be either put it on a lift, or yank the motor. Removing the engine may be easiest to get the starter out however I feel that doin this causes more work then needed. I've changed the starter on my 97 in less then 20 min jus crawlin underneath on my back, it aint the most comfortable but you could always jus jack up the front a lil for clearence.

Only about 100 miles south. A couple of miles from Portsmouth, NH. Real nice right now, but I'm not much for the winters.

pull the passenger side motor mount thru bolt out, take the nuts off the rear trans mount, jack up the front of the motor on the passenger side front corner oil pan rail. take the bracket for the starter to battery cable off the block. remove the inspection cover, drop the starter down. then push the starter into the hole between the mount, and tilt it up towards the exhaust, then twist and turn and make the wires end of the solenoid point down. take the wires off, push the starter back into the hole by the mount, and drop it out nose cone first.
