best engine flush

Well i decided today with my truck reaching 250k it was time for a engine oil flush and a good crank case cleanin.

whats the best thing to use to clean and flush all the high mileage gunk from the ole s-10? i wanna find something to use that'll get all the sludge so when i take a valve cover off she's looks new again under there

Re: best engine flush

I would not do that if I were you - last time I used engine flush I flushed the engine down the toilet. I did flush and then changed oil and it ran about 10 minutes and oil light came on and that was it. I assume it broke some deposits loose and it got into the oil pump. I am not the first to have that happen either, most flush is basically kerosene and think about how thin 5w30 is to start and then thin it down by adding a quart of kerosene to it and imagine how that will be on your internals.

Re: best engine flush

I have used the gunk engine flush before but not on my blazer. I used it on my 2g eclipse.

Re: best engine flush

An experienced old time mechanic told me years ago to run a half to one quart of type f tranny fluid in the old for a week. Then change it. Ive done that quite few times. Oil sure gets dirty in the fewdays to aweek.

X2. Worst case scenario, but not at all unlikely. Even if you don't wreck your engine, you'll probably develop a lot of leaks.

Re: best engine flush

I can get a hold of some if you want to give it a try.
You're welcome to try it out at my cost, as long as you let me know what you think afterward!

I think the recommendation is to run it in the vehicle at moderate to low(er) idle for 10 mins, then dump the oil.
As an alternative (or in combination with a light engine flush use), you can try an oil that has more detergent additives and you may get a cleaner motor gradually as you reach consecutive OCIs.

Re: best engine flush

i just use a high quality oil (synthetic) and change it when it gets black after about a month then put some new synthetic in it and run it for 3k mobil 1 is good about cleaning things out without damaging anything.

Re: best engine flush

Seafoam is the BEST all around engine cleaner you can buy. I would say it's comparable to a BG flush in the job it does.
I put it in the oil, go for a short drive then change it. Afterwards there is a big difference. I do it in my Firebird every spring when I bring her out, then about mid summer again. Plus have run it through the crankcase of many friends and family cars.

Ditto. It it really is that boogered up, then running a solvent like kerosene through it is just going to cause problems. A gradual approach would probably be best. A little ATF would work or my dad used to swear by CD-2 detergent http://automotive.neebo.org/cd-2-oil-detergent-15-oz. His engines always seemed to last forever and never had any sludge. Just use it for every oil change and you'll be all cleaned up before you know it.
