4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
Hello, Im new here and looking to get a little insight before a purchase. Ive had my share of s-10s from a 98 4x4 stepside with a 4.3 to a 96 with a 2.2 2wd to a 91 4.3. Im looking at getting a 99 GMC sonoma with a 4.3 2wd with a 100k on it. Im wondering just in general what I could expect to get for all highway driving. I drive about 65 miles one way to work on a 60mph road. I was getting about 29 with my 2.2. How might this Sonoma compare?
Thanks alot |

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
you've driven more s10s than i have, so it sounds like you know better already....?
id get a tuneup and throw some seafoam in there maybe a couple times and see how much better it runs if you decide to buy it.. |

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
I would figure with a 4.3 auto, around 21-24 mpg highway, doing 60 mph. You could probably do a couple mods to improve your mpg's but the biggest increase you're going to see is by keeping it at/around 60 mph.

not an auto trans, but I have a 5-spd in my '97 S10 4.3 and get a solid 23-24 mpg at highway speeds (65-70 mph). Engine has 177k miles.

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
thanks, it's actually a piece...ive beat the shit out of my truck...and ive also got hit by a suv in the snow that i used the money to pay off bills instead...and my front bumper is kinda mangled...and also its getting a new motor then ill start fixing things...
but anyways... you can get a computer tune that everyone swears by...either wait4meperformance or the pcmsforless....that'll increase mpg if you get tuned for that... and theres a couple lil' things too....i honestly couldn't tell you what my mpg is... |

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
Haha well i have a 97 4.3 with about 4.5" of lift and running 30"x9.5"x15" tires. I think the highest i have ever hit was 19.7 but that is also considering i have never gone a whole fillup without flooring it a couple of times=]. Right now i have CAI, Cat-back exhaust, and transgo shift kit. Soon i will be adding a 270 cam swap, internals, ford 8.8 w/4.10 gears, 2.5" y-pipe, and W4M performance tune. After all that this winter i want to be able to pussy foot it and get into the 20's lol. I think that would be pretty good for a lifted truck lol.

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
I average 16-17 in 70% city 30% highway and I have a 5 speed 2wd 4.3l, I do admit to the heavy foot however LOL. My 02 Blazer Xtreme averaged 13 same driving situation as I am a creature of habit and do not go many places, that truck was new off the lot and my pickup has almost 128k on it now.

No to the hypertech programmer. You can put the $150 towards the PCM tune.

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
agreed. you can get a "wait4Me" tune for just $10
more than that Hypertech. and W4M will deliver considerably superior results than that Hypertech ever could. |

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
You go to the website, and email them. They should reply to you, you tell them what you want and you can go over the things you are looking to gain from the tune.

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
If and when you do the PCM tune, you should keep track of your fuel mileage before and after the tune to see an exact gain on the mpg.

Re: 4.3 ave mpg on a 2wd s-10
I have a '98 w/ 160k on it. It's a 2wd 4.3 auto extended cab. I average 19-20 with a 50-50 mix of freeway (70ish) and around town. I've put the last 100k + on it and I've never driven it nicely!
