stupid 2.8
Ok so I have a 2.8 liter in my 88 s10, the motor is out of a 93 if that makes any difference. I am getting really crappy fuel millage it seems.(haven't calculated it for sure but seems to be doing worse here lately then it has been in the past) and it is throwing a code 13 witch I don't know what it is yet and a code 42 witch I know is a something about spark timing something, I know it has to do with that wire under the dash that you unhook when checking the timing and it is connected and always has been since I have had the truck. What I have found the code 42 could be from a short in the wiring around the dist, bad ignition module(witch is less than a year old), problem with the ecm, or knock sensor.
The other problem I am having with the truck is the turn signals, sometimes they will work fine, sometimes you turn them on and they just stay on until you cancel the lever, and for a long time the left one would work correctly or maybe blink a little fast and the right one would just stay on when u put it on. I have put like 4 different blinker solenoid things on it (the thing under the dash on the fuse panel that is like the relay for the turn signals) and that didn't do anything. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks |

Re: stupid 2.8
I made a nice post that was made into a sticky (only one int his section) about codes and reading them and you are the first one since I've made it to ask about them, hmmm. Theres even a link in it to tell you what codes mean.
Anyways cause I'm bored code 13-O2 sensor, open oxygen sensor circuit---indicates that the oxygen sensor circuit or sensor was open for one minute while off idle code 42-est, ECM has seen an open or grounded EST or bypass circuit. As far is it goes I'd say you prolly can't tell me the last time the O2 sensor was changed (they do need to be changed) so replace that and see if it fixes that problem. While your at it make sure all connections and wire look good. For the EST: http://www.autozone.com/shopping/rep...00c1528003d465 The turns (while not the right section) sound like a bad canceler, its behind the steering wheel. http://www.autozone.com/R,NONAPP3821...ductDetail.htm Last edited by neo71665 : 06-20-2008 at 11:42 PM. |

Re: stupid 2.8
Yea sorry I missed the sticky. Im not in the 2.8 forum very often. I already knew how to get the codes anyway. But I picked up an o2 sensor and a timing light. I found what I think is the right wire to unhook under the dash on the passenger side by the floor and it makes no difference on timing weather it is unplugged or not. So according to that autozone thing, that means that I have a problem with the EST. So does that mean I need to replace the ignition control module? And the initial timing is way off if I am doing this right, the timing light is showing the mark at like over an inch before(counter-clockwise when looking at the front of motor) the plate that has the timing marks on it. When I rev it up it advances like it should. Just to be sure the number 1 clylinder is the one closest to you on the passenger side when standing in front of the truck right? Here's a pic of the wire I am talking about.

Re: stupid 2.8
The cylinder numbers are on the intake and yes that looks like the correct connector.

Re: stupid 2.8
I had a 42 on a saturn and the ign module fixed it right up.
You are probably only getting static timing which is what you get at WOT, yes it goes up with RPM but you could get a lot more timing at partial load/cruise which is what's now killing your gas mileage. Last edited by eljefino : 06-29-2008 at 02:22 PM. |
