Spiiting, sputtering, code 44.

Hi,
My 87 s10 Blazer is spittering and sputtering. When sitting and idleing the rpms vary slightly. Under part throttle, it spits and sputters a lot. Under full throttle it seems to run ok.
Do you think the o2 sensor could cause this or do I have a massive vacuum leak?
Any places to look?
Thanks,
Mike

Haynes manual says a lean condition exists. Check for loose connections at the computer, check for vacuum leaks, replace O2 sensor. I just don't think a lean condition alone, could make the engine spit and pop. Am I wrong?

I have no idea. I would check all the basics if you havent already. PCV valve, fuel pressure, observe the injector spray, fuel filter, etc...

Re: Spiiting, sputtering, code 44.

I got it, every bolt , nut on the intake manifold was loose. I tightened them up and it runs great. I have driven it for a couple hours and it has only spit once at pull off 3 or 4 times. I am afraid that it damaged the intake gasket being loose for so long. Oh well, at least I know what it is now. It runs better than it has in years. Of course I also changed the timing chain, Dissy cap and rotor, pcv, and gas cap.
Thanks Guys

let me get this right, every bolt on the intake was loose? I bet that thing was dumping oil out of the engine as fast you could pour it in.

Re: Spiiting, sputtering, code 44.

Neo,
I could not see any oil leaking from the manifold. The engine leaks very little oil compared to how old that it is. The engine is copletely covered with a layer of grime, oil. There is thick oil residue in the valley between the valve cover and intake. I had assumed that it was coming from the valve covers.
I was thinking more of an internal vacuum leak? I don't know. It runs better than I ever remember it running.
Torque settings for the intake are 23 lb. ft. I'm guessing the all were at about 10 lb. ft.. When I first checked with a 3/8 drive ratchet they all turned easily. I broke out my torque wrench at that point.
I'm very happy with how it is running.
