Maybe a carb issue?

I just got back from a 900mile trip in my 83 s-10 and when i was close to home i got off of the freeway to get some gas and as soon as i stopped giving power to the motor it would die. It would not idle at all but i could still kinda drive it. Next day same issue but it would idle when it wanted to. Than today i started it up, started driving and as soon as the cluth met the pressure plate the motor would bog down and die. With no load on the motor i could feather the gas to keep it running but as soon as a load hit the motor it would jerk, bog down and eventually die. Any advise? I was going to start at the carb but even than i am not sure where i should focus. PLEASE HELP!!!!

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

start simple first - check all vac lines, all tune-up items, fuel filter. What's the carb's condition (overdue for cleaning and rebuild)?

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

I believe the carb was rebuilt years ago but only around 8,000+ miles. I am going to check the vacuum lines now, will let you know how it goes. Thanks

Unhappy Re: Maybe a carb issue?

So i went throught the vacuum system and everything seems to be in place except i did find a few hoses just hanging there attached to something with three ports. Two of them are much larger than the third with the smaller of them on top. The smaller on and next one down are in line while the third one is turned 90 degrees clockwise. I am guessing it is for emissions but am not sure. I took the hoses and hooked the up to two ports on the back of my carb, both of them large in size and hooked another hose into a port the comes out just under the carb on my driver side. This helped with the idle issue however i still cannot put a load on my motor.

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

At this point I would look at fuel pressure and volume, then ignition.

Finish here first, based on your reply it's time to check vac line routing- shore up this first before moving fwd (add in checking tuneup parts as well however).
add: you're far from complete carb diagnosis just yet (vac pulloffs working, choke working, carb rebuild parts issues, full cleaning, etc ?).

Pics might help here btw

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

So yesterday i also ran a diagnostic on the intake manifold vaccum. That told me either my carb needs adjustment or i have a leak on the intake manifold. I took it in for a second diagnostic and it was confirmed i have a leak so i am working on that now. They where also able to tune the carb to enable my truck to idle, so its running pretty good but needs that leak fixed. I am also prob looking at a new carb in the near future becuase at some point the the past the adjusment screws where either chisled out or where tightened to much and damaged the carb. Any good websites or recomendations on a prefferably rebuilt carb? I was also able to get a diagram for the vacuum system from the garage today so when i am putting everything back together i am going to follow it closely and try to find any rotted hoses. Thanks for the help!

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

Better prices: http://www.guaranteedcarbs.com/
But are you sure you can't rebuild it yourself?

Vac pulloffs look in poor shape (gotta check 'em to know for sure), and I would bet it's far overdue for rebuild/cleaning judging by pics.

leak: did they say it's a vacuum leak or carb/fuel?

Explain the pics, why are you bypassing it?...and what about the inlets photo?
What are you asking here?

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

It was a leak intake manifold gasket. That has since been replaced. I have it running ok however a new carb is still needed. It is beyond a rebuild as it has had many in the past and has been monkeyed up pretty good. Seems to have some leaks and is a challenge to tune. The entire vacuum system is also in working order.

Re: Maybe a carb issue?

So after a new intake manifold gasket, new carb, and a new water pump, my baby is running smooth. Some small issues need to be fixed. I have less power but i think it is a choke/timing issue. Thanks for all the help!!!
