resurfacing of the flywheel doesn't cause chatter just half ass work

Re: hows my heads look?

Got it on the power. I've had mostly very good results with having flywheels resurfaced, but I did have one done that was not right and had to take it apart and redo it. The guy that cut it the second time said it was out .012". Not good and chattered badly. A reputable machine shop can do this with no ill effects and normally you only replace when the flywheel gets too thin or the heat cracks can't be removed.

Re: hows my heads look?

well I have had my same flywheel for 5 years and turned 3 times, and neutrally balanced by myself. I personally havn't problems with it or any of the other 100+ clutches I have installed. circumstances like the one from above are rare but do happen.

Agree, I only had it happen once, but took it to a different shop and it was out. Either the machine or the machinist, don't know which.

Re: hows my heads look?

Actually resurfacing the flywheel DOES indeed move the clutch farther away from the clutch lever/arm. It moves the entire assembly towards the engine. It may only be a few thousanths, but it can in some cases make all the difference.

The recommended procedure when resurfacing a flywheel is to use a shim between the flywheen and crank equal to the amount shaved off the flywheel itself, to keep the geometry of the clutch release mechanism proper and within proper travel distances.

In older cars, there could have been so much difference between astock flywheel and re-srufaced flywheel that some times the clutch wouldn't disengage properly, causing the clutch to be essentially slipping and over heat the clutch on shifts, due to the friction. Most people wouldn't notice this in daily driving, but for those of us that drive spirited, we usually noticed in a hurry.

That being said, I don't recall ever using a shim, since I've only ever had to remove a couple thousanths at most when resurfacing the flywheel and it doesn't seem to have made for any poor drivability.

Re: hows my heads look?

Re: hows my heads look?

Never shimmed one and never had a problem. Either with a hydraulic clutch or mechanical. There is plenty of adjustment in either to make up for the material removed. In older cars (mechanical) you adjusted the threaded linkage to get the proper clearance.

Lapping?

If that's the case, go buy a lapping tool, it looks like a stick with two suction cups on it, because well, that's pretty much what it is, and some lapping compound. It's pretty easy to do. You should have a guide in your Haynes manual.

Re: hows my heads look?

finally got the crossover pipe figured out cause i had time to lol.. pretty much a straight shot using a 90degree.. i just need the other side to bolt it together, only prob is i had to take off that brace underneith the tranny for it to clear.. but it should sit more then high enough so it wont drag.. also figured out a much better way to do the piping for the exaust side.. gonna be tricky but its possibly.. pretty much run it over the crossover pipe and between the valve cover and cab.. kinda hard to explain but it makes sense in my head..

Re: hows my heads look?

as of probly 15 min ago i finally finished plumbin the exhaust.. after many many trips to the exhaust shop for bends its done.. i just need the pipe welded since its all tached together.. but now motor can come out and be built up while truck gets paint!!!!

that crossover pipe will sit a few inches higher when done..

and for the muffler just gotta stick my turn down on the end.. and the muffler will also sit higher once the bracket is made to hold it..

The alternator is the tensioner on the above pictured engine.

Using a spring loaded tensioner is definatly a better way to go though.
