I'm wondering how hard it is to replace the front crank seal on my 85 S 10 with 2.8 v6. I'm assuming that the seal cracked from lack of use since the previous owners rarly used it. Only other leaks that are obvious are the vavle covers, no biggy there to replace.
Is there anything that would require me to lift the motor, like an oil pan removal. Or can I do this with out lifting the motor? Thanks for any responses. Will be getting a manual for it soon, but not sure it covers crank seals. |

Re: Front crank seal replacement?
on my 89 2.8 its easy... pull off the water pump and any accesories that are in the way take the carnk pulley bolt loose and use a pulley puler to take the carnk pulley off. you need a torxs bit set to pull the timing chain cover off and the seal is in the timing chain cover... it should take less than 4 hours

Sad to say though that once its that far apart you best replace lots of things cause Murphys Law will get ya.

Re: Front crank seal replacement?
Thanks darks10. I wasn't sure if I was going to have to lift the motor, I've heard that some motors this would be the case to remove the oil pan to replace the seal. But at least the pu should of had an early good seviced life since it was a state fleet vehicle. Just would like to eliminate oil leaks to prolong it's life since I'm using it for a work truck. Now if I just had a garage to work in life would be good. 350X I hate murphy's law, He likes to torment me alot haha ha. Got a lumina van that needs work also cause of murphy's law. I like the 3.1 thats in it, got good gas milage too. But need to find out if the block has been damaged since a freeze plug popped out from a cold weekend. Had drained the radiator but there must of been to much wtaer in the block, had leak problems so I had been running it with water in it till I had resolved it but winter had other plans.
