Engine knocking
I have a 92' s-10 2.8 5 speed and today when my truck idles it knocks pretty loud on the passenger side of the engine compartment. What could this be? I thgought it was my alternator at first but my friend said it sounded like it was coming from the valve cover. Any thoughts?
Thanks Jamie |

Re: Engine knocking
is it a knock or a tap? if it is tapping it is most likelt lifter tap. Take a stethoscope, if you don't have one use a long screwdriver. Put your ear to the handle and touch the screwdriver to different places of the engine. this will help pinpoint where the noise is comming from

Re: Engine knocking
What would a knocking sound like? This does sound more like a tap, tap, tap. like something is ticking. its weird but this sucks cause i've put all the time and money to fix my truck and now i can't drive it.

Re: Engine knocking
is the noise that bad that you can not drive it? what does your noise sound like, tapping? if it is you can try on you next oil change to do an engine oil flush. this might be able to unblock the oil passage on your lifter.(if it is indeed your lifter that is tapping.) the reason lifters usualy tap is because thay are not getting enough oil

Re: Engine knocking
if it is just a idle it could be that your motor is running incorrectly( like its idleing too rich) and the motor is moving around, this could be causing the exhaust to be ratling somewhere. My blazer does it now and then.

Re: Engine knocking
it hasn't lost any power and my exhaust is all tight. i'm going to check my rockers and make sure there all tight. Its pretty nasty inside the valve cover. all gunked up. I won't be able to get to it til tomorrow though and I have to go by a new gasket.
Thanks Jamie |

Re: Engine knocking
K i fixed my problem. today when i went to move my truck to my garage to take the vavle cover off i went to start it and i heard this nasty squeling noise. I noticed my alternator wasn't turning and my truck wouldn't start. so the problem after all was the alternator which i thought was the problem in the beginning. It had seized up so i went bought a new one and slapper her in there and there was still a problem. My truck wouldn't turn over to save its life. I think it was flooded from earlier trying to start it and i just stomped on the gas a couple times and it started out rough but now is running perfectly smooth. I happy it wasn't a engine problem. Also does anyone know of a cleaner of some sort that will clean out inside the valve covers cause if you look inside its all gunked up?
Thanks Jamie |

Re: Engine knocking
you can run a oil flush product. you put it in before an oil change idle the engine 10 minutes then flush the oil. it usually does a good job
