Carb base gasket
I recently purchased an 84 with a 2.8 that wouldn't stay running unless you kept your foot in it for a few minutes, then it would idle all day long. It sounded like it was sucking air so after misting some carb cleaner around the intake I decided to replace the carb base gasket. I picked up a gasket from work, pulled the carb and noticed that the old gasket has two wires (that weren't connected to anything btw) and a screen on it. The gasket I bought doesn't have that. Will it hurt anything to use the one I got, or could those unplugged wires be part of the problem?
Thanks Terry |

Re: Carb base gasket
Somebody will chime in that knows more but if I remember right it was some kinda heater that was supposed to help cold cranking and emissions but rarely worked right. I wouldn't worry too much about them

Re: Carb base gasket
Sounds good to me, thanks for the help.
After looking at it a little closer the screen looks a bit melted, so I guess it is a heater of sorts. Thanks again |

Re: Carb base gasket
Yeah it's a heated EFE gasket ($70-80 at stealrship).
It actually does 'help" with cold starts/running at really cold temps. I used a heated EFE before a rebuild and putting on a non efe base gasketand there is a bit of difference - but again, only in regard to really cold temps outside. If your old one was melted/degraded to any degree it's most likely shot or more of a hinderance than help, so yeah the new one you have is still probably better than nothing. |
