Another 2.8 question
I believe I had a head gasket go bad on my 84' 2.8. Most of the coolant entered the crankcase. However there was no indication coolant was entering a cylinder. Is this a head gasket issue or is it possible that it was the intake gasket or are there any other possible places for coolant to get into the bottom end?
Thanks in advance! |

Re: Another 2.8 question
Head gaskets typically fail one of 3 different ways - water in the oil, oil in the water, or coolant smell coming out of the exhaust - but as mentioned, sometimes a failed intake manifold gasket can be mis-diagnosed as a bad head gasket. Either way, you're going to have to pull the intake manifold off and replace those gaskets, so I'd start by pulling the intake and seeing if there's any obvious signs of failure there; if not, then you're going to have to dig deeper and get the other gaskets you'll need to service the heads.
But hey, look at the bright side of it: While you've got the intake off, it'd be a PERFECT time to take the manifold down to a machine shop and have them bore out the two TBI holes to match a 4.3 TBI base gasket so you can slap on a 4.3 TBI unit and pick up a couple extra horses when you put it all back together. |
