'93 2.8 TBI- Help!

I have a 1993 2.8L V6, standard transmission. I bought this truck and it didnt start or run. Put a new battery in it, all new plugs, set the timing, ran a compression test, adjdjusted the valves, and after all of this.. it finally started up and runs. But it runs like it has absolutely no power. In each gear, it will reach speeds of maybe 20mph but acts as if it is stuttering/surging and wants to die. It seems to be getting fuel just fine at idle. The vac lines also seem to be hooked up correctly, but will replace them anyways incase they are rotted.Any ideas on what this problem could be?

would placing my hand at the end of the exhaust and checking for air coming out be a good enough check? or is it more complex than that?

Take look at the Fuel pump and filter. Pull out the filter and see if you can blow through it. If you got to pull the pump, get a buddy and just pull the bed off.

Oh, try unplugging the MAP sensor. Sometimes a bad MAP sensor will kill power. Unplugged, the ECM will use default codes to run better.

You should be able to just look at the TBI injector to see if they are pouring gas in.

Re: '93 2.8 TBI- Help!

1- checked the cat converter...and it turns out, it was already cut out and removed.

2- there is plenty of gas being sprayed out of the injectors during idle, so im guessing its fine when i shut the hood and drive it (even though its not going very fast or far).

I should be pulling the fuel filter and all that out this weekend and ill give that a try. thanks for all the input so far guys

mine is the same way, i put a new fuel pump and filter in, still is slow a poop. sounds like a beast at idle but when i take of its not goin anywhere to fast. i drive it every day to school but i cant stand how slow it is. i can hardly keep up with traffic without flooring it.

My list of guesses:

1. Throttle position sensor (check voltage to specs and/or replace)
2. EGR valve stuck (remove and clean or replace)
3. Fuel filter ridiculously plugged
4. Timing may still not be correct (what degree of advance did you set it to?)

Re: '93 2.8 TBI- Help!

Not sure if the two of you have the same problem but if it sounds like a "beast" at idle (like it has a cam) you probably have a plug wire off or adjusted at least one valve to tight. I speak from experience on both on my 1993 2.8l v6 with a 5-speed. BTW where the hell do you guys get your fuel that you think any problem is a fuel filter? I know it's cheap to replace but man how often do they really get clogged? I have never had to replace one. "My rear brakes lock up when it's wet out...""It's the fuel filter for sure"

The fuel filter is supposed to be more of a preventative maintenance kind of thing, but a lot of people tend to put it off or forget about it for so long that, regardless of what brand of fuel is getting put through there, it eventually gets packed so full of poo that it inhibits fuel flow. My girlfriend let the fuel filter in her '04 Mustang go until it was almost at 80k miles before I changed it out because the thing was sputtering and bucking at low speeds, and it fixed the issue.

Re: '93 2.8 TBI- Help!

im suprised no one has mentioned the PCV valve yet. very easy to replace and very inexpensive too. It can cause a lot of frustration when those go bad/ get clogged.

Have you pulled the trouble codes yet? What do they say? I would start there. There is a tutorial at the top.
