2.8L check engine soon Clutch?

i have a 92 s10 with a 2.8l 5speed in it. recently the left valve cover was leaking a bit so i bought new valve cover gaskets and put those in. the leaking stoped

now the problem is i was driving and it felt like the clutch slipped really bad and my truck jerked a couple times, and its hard to explain the clutch situation unless you drove it but its very clunky in 1st, 2nd and third, and a little bit in 4th, and when i let the rpm's build up in 1st and 2nd about 3500 rpm it feels like its dragging? something is holding it back from moving? maybe the torque converter? and i also have a check ingine light and i went to schucks to borrow a code reader and the truck is not running an codes? is this just a clutch problem? thanks for any advise you guys can give me in advance

You can have both, the quetion hes asking is do you had a manual or auto tranny.

If you have a manual you don't have a converter you just have a clutch. If you have an auto you have a converter and clutch packs(the packs require major teardown to get to).

oh and if its manual shift then the oil from the valve covers could have contaminated the clutch. I suggest you get a Haynes manual and read up.

i did say i have a 5speed my first post, but yes its a manual. i used the Chilton General Motors Repair Manual when i did the valve cover gaskets. so im sure im going to be needing a new clutch, but does that explain the check engine soon light with no codes? its also running really rich now

Re: 2.8L check engine soon Clutch?

Well your the one that asked if it was a torque converter (auto only item).

Good job getting a chiltons (way better than a crappy haynes). I'm gonna say your clutch is shot. How many miles on the clutch?

As far as codes unless your ECM is shot if the light on the dash is staying on it has a code. Maybe the code reader you borrowed was shot. Have you tried jumping the pins out like the sticky in this section says and see if it tells you any codes?

the check engine light is in no way related to the tranny....light will come on mainly when theres an emission problem...for what you described....prolly an O2 sensor....of which you only have one of

as far as your clutch....you can buy a new pressure plate, throwout bearing, and pilot bushing as a kit for around 150 bux..you'll also have to get your flywheel re surfaced at a shop that does that sort of thing....while the tranny is out....go ahead and replace your rear main seal...it'll save you in the long run

clutch has 120k miles on it, and today i noticed when in 1st and 2nd gear when slowly building up the rpms at a certain point the truck will drag and theres a bit of vibration with a sound that is hard to describe but its like a deep whoop sound under the truck which repeats itsself until pushing the clutch in and changing gears?

Usually a clutch lasts about 100K miles so if you have 120k on it it needs to be replaced
