2.8 Oil sending unit location?
New S-10 2.8 owner. Thanks for having me here! Where is the Oil Sending Unit on my 2wd 1991 2.8 S-10 5 speed? I got a new one to install since my gauge quit working at 125xxx miles. Will a bunch of oil come leaking out when I remove it? Thanks!!

Re: 2.8 Oil sending unit location?
you will loose a lit bit of oil (less than 1/2 quart). should be located on back of engine, driver side, bottom area.

Next time shut the engine off first. I have never had more than a couple drops of oil "lost" when removing the OPSU. These drops are just what has stuck to the OPSU. |

Actually my truck would not start and finally found the wires going to the opsu had burnt on the manifold and shorted out, taped them up and tied them back and it runs. Weird but its true

Re: 2.8 Oil sending unit location?
There is one OPSU that can cause starting issues, it's the 2-pin sender. The reason is because it's connected to the circuit that powers the fuel pump. I assume the purpose for this is that in case oil pressure drops too low (i.e. non-existent) then it can ground out the circuit to kill the fuel pump, shutting off the engine and hopefully save your engine before it burns itself out. In some cases the switch can go back causing a no-start condition. When your wires burnt out and shorted on the manifold then the 12v destined for the fuel pump would have grounded out there.

Re: 2.8 Oil sending unit location?
Had the same problem with my '88. Both the canister (3 prong) and 2 prong sending units are under the drivers side wheel, connected to the 3 way fitting on your oil filter housing. My OPSU would work, but would take about 5 seconds average, more with first crank after oil change, and then fire right up. I got tired of waiting, so I installed a killswitch right under the cig lighter, and I just flip it before I get ready to crank, and no problems. Just remember to turn your switch off when you turn your truck off. You'll learn quick if not the hard way, trust me.
