Re: volant air box on 2.2

I have a Volant cold air intake that is a direct bolt on and is only $99.00 from volant plus shipping, it cleans up your engine really well by deleting the factory restrictive air box.

I was looking at the Volant too. I found the one for the 2.2 for $190 at Jegs. Let me know what you find out. . .

It looks really nice. I'm looking at getting it. I have a '96 and it's so much more for the '94-'97 models than the '98+. You like the one you got on eBay?

Re: volant air box on 2.2

I did a mini "review" on a thread a while back, here's the link:
http://www.s10forum.com/forum/f105/m...review-405837/

Here's the post:

Mini Volant CAI review
I've been sitting on the fence about getting a CAI cause the ebay ones look incredibly cheaply made and who knows if the filter is any good.
The K&N one's are just too much money.

I saw an add at top of this forum for the Volant for $99, so I checked them out. I go to the site and it's $109 so I emailed them and they fixed the price.
So I ordered one. A week later I still didn't get any tracking or shipping notice. So I emailed them again and they apologized and said it was going out the next day.
Never got any notice but it did come 4-5 days later...

Straight forward putting it on...I didn't even read at the directions which looked detailed...

2 minor issues:
1- The rubber flange was cut a little rough on one end (nice factory looking cut on opposite end) so I cleaned that up.
2- I needed to line everything up where it belonged and slightly bend the mounting bar over to bolt up, easy enough.
Very sturdy steel mounting bar (won't break off due to vibration)

I wasn't expecting miracles and I didn't get one. It did make the truck rev easier above 3,000 rpm. I noticed going down the highway I don't have to press the gas down quite as for for the same MPH.

It makes a mild roar which I knew it would but it's not annoying like I thought it would be and you have to be wanting to go fast to make it louder than stock, shift before 3,000 and I can't hear it.

All in all a quality mod, I know I could have gone cheaper but I just didn't like the ebay ones.

Also it's not even close to the A/C pulley

Here's a pic of the intake installed:

I've read a lot of the CAI reviews and no one mentioned removing this piece but taking this out opened a passage to the grill which indeed lets the cold air in while baffling the rain, etc.
Here's a pic of part I took out of the core support.

And here's a pic of the resulting intake opening created to let the "cold air in.

I just don't wanna drop $230 on it. I'm curious to see if the 98+ will be able to be a modified fit for my '96.

Re: volant air box on 2.2

Re: volant air box on 2.2

The volant was only $99 and splits the difference between the K&N and the "cheap" ebay chrome intakes, the pipes and fittings might be alright but I wouldn't have any faith in the filter itself.

Buy what you like & can afford

Werd with some work you can make an air intake that is JUST as good as the K&N ones, it's just tubing + a filter, the important part is that you get the cold air to it . . . which is why I fail for not having put my air scoop into production yet for the budget CAI guys, damn college + moving + life

that thing doesn't "split the difference" this is a 100hp truck, there is no difference in a $50 ebay intake or a $200 k&n intake except you can brag about having a $200 intake. don't like shiny? paint it black

now you get into a more complex system and to vehicles that are making 250+whp with poorly designed intakes and you may be able to... nah even on my cobalt ss i use an $80 ebay intake and it does the same as a $300 k&N or injen.

and i think most of us around here can afford $200 chump change for an intake, it's just that there are much more important things to spend it on like liquor and hookers.

Re: volant air box on 2.2

the volant was only $99

The difference is in the fit & finish

I spent all money on women & booze and the rest I wasted...LOL

my $50 ebay intake fit perfect and came with a heat shield in addidtion to the filter and pipe and the bracket that secures it is almost underneath it at the bottom. that $100 one don't come with anything except a higher price tag

Re: volant air box on 2.2

well that used to be the great thing about being an American , freedom to choose whatever you want. Now that China owns the USA we might all be forced to buy ebay intakes...LOL
