turbo build begins!!!

well i have been telln a couple people about me starting a turbo build and now im getting my thread ready!! i have been on the phone with david from dts this weekend and im excited to get the turbo header built. its going to be different then most the turbo manifolds made on the recent turbo s10's. im goin with a devided t3 manifold, external wastegate with tial38mm flange with the synapse wastegate. im ordering the header next week, and the turbo by the second week of march, buying the big stuff first then its all downhill from there (i hope) and when i get it ill post the pictures as i receive the stuff! i wont be building till the snow is over and its warmer because the shop i use doesnt have heat. but ill be keeping everyone informed and updated on my purchases and everything else!! im excited!!

I wouldnt say electronic ones are a waste of money (since i do have one), you can fine tune the crap outta it. There are alot more options than just to control the boost. and just in case, check your BOV

He is a guy I knew from school, i have bought several from him. Its a nice, cheap boost controller. Works good, I have never had any spiking/leak issues. Hes sold probably thousands of them

Re: turbo build begins!!!

well since its taking longer then expected for the manifold mainly because i am havn it made custom dual scroll with external wg, and hes been swamped i guess, but i should have it pretty soon id imagine! anyway while im waiting for that to be shipped i thought id post a list of everything im ordering for my turbo build so if people have questions!

Turbo Products for build!
  • Custom devided Turbo manifold/w external wastegate by DTS turbo:: 580$ (http://www.dts2.net/turbos-10/)
  • Garrett T3/T4E, 50 trim compressor with StageIII (76 trim) turbine wheel, Oil cooled only, no water lines required. The usual favorite T3/T4 turbo and very common use hybrid turbo used on variety of engines for best overal response and supports power to 450 crank HP. .78 A/R Turbine i know thats a lil big but im lookn for top end power and i have a fix for the turbo lag and i wouldnt have to use nos, ill explain later! T3 devided scroll v-band housing 3" is what it will be!:: 670$ (http://www.aptuning.net/T3_T4E_50Tri...bn-tbo-060.htm
  • 2.5" black powdercoated universal piping kit off ebay:: 100$
  • 2.5" SSQV BOV adapter pipe for the synchronic BOV off ebay:: 17$
  • Synapse Engineering 40mm Universal 2-Bolt Synchronic wastegate:: 290$ (http://www.turbochargers.com/store/p...oducts_id/1630)
  • Universal Synchronic BOV with SSQV Adapter Flange:: 218$ (http://www.turbochargers.com/store/p...oducts_id/1831)
  • Intercooler im gonna buy csxtremes older spearco intercooler when he gets his upgraded!
  • Custom 3" vband downpipe and 3" all the way back:: unknown price yet, local performance shop is gonna do it for me!
  • oil feed/drain lines off ebay:: about 60-80$
  • NSX Manual Boost Controller off ebay. comes with lifetime warranty 20$
  • We are pleased to bring you a revolutionary product for aftermarket turbo kits! We have created a product that had a 25% increase in rear wheel horsepower, while reducing unwanted turbo lag! It\'s like nitrous but you\'ll never have to fill a bottle again.

The Quick Spool Valve has a butterfly valve blocking a scroll of the divided turbo housing making the turbo act as if it were a smaller turbo. The switching solenoid can be wired up to open at a set point and when the valve opens up you have the full potential of your turbo with no sacrifice of peak power

Our Quick Spool Valve is available in T3, T4, and even T6 sizes. practicaly cuts the ar size in half for quicker spool at low end and still keep top end power and boost!! here is a picture of it! this is what i was talking about earlier with the bigger .78 ar i can lower my ar with this in low end and still get my top end power ar def money saved in my pocket instead of nos refills and not to mention safty and blowin up the motor!
Engine and ignition

Tranny (4l60E)
  • Centerforce Dual Friction clutch (summit racing)
  • Stage II shift kit (summit racing)
  • #K19. Alto 4L60E master rebuild kit with an 8 clutch Red Eagle Power Pack and full thickness Kolene steels for the 3-4 clutch and High Energy for the other clutch sets. The 3-4 Power Pack is a multi disk design with sixteen friction surfaces. The 3-4 clutch is the weak point on 4L60E transmissions. This kit will give you a 33% larger clutch apply area on the 3-4 clutch with high performance Red Eagle clutches and Kolene steels to boot. This kit is custom built for PATC by Alto. Thin steels will not work on the 3-4 clutch in a 4L60E with over 400 horse power. Eight clutches are the maximum number you can use in the 3-4 clutch pack with full thickness steels.
Wake your 4L60E up with this Wake Up Kit. You get the Sonnax oversize .490" Mega Valve, the Superior 35% oversize high performance overdrive billet servo & the Superior 50% oversize high performance intermediate billet servo. These three parts will wake up your 4L60E transmission. Also included in this Combo Kit is an Alto Carbonite PowerBand with thicker hardened anchors that holds in second and overdrive. This is the combination we use to build our level 2, 700-E Raptor Junior transmissions, then we added the Red EaglePower Pack to this kit. (http://www.4l60-e.com/#Performance%20Parts)
  • upgrade driveshaft eventually
  • LSD rear end sometime as well instead of posi with disk brake swap instead of drums
well i hope u all have fun reading this this isnt a 100% complete list but its just about all of what im about to do over the next 2 years!

why not over sized valves?
have you priced the pistons out?
that quick spool looks pretty cool. have you seen any feedback from people using it?

jbp wants too much for a cam
my comp custom was like 160.00

the msd dis 2 isn't really needed
AUTOLITE ar103 plugs and a good set of wires do nicely.

As for your trans look at raybestos z pack for your 3-4
my trans still isnt built completely.
just drilled seperator plate, billet servos, and a few other tweaks as well as trans computer programing

dis 2 u dont think i need? but what if i need to advance or retard the timing how would i go about doing it? does hptuners do it? raybestos z pack..hm never heard of that u got any links or info for it?

the quick spool ive gotn some pretty good feedback and its been tested with dyno results! pm me if u want the website and number for it! but the quick spool is designed for dual scroll turbos thats why its made the way it is, i dont know how it will work with ur regular exhuast housing but u can ask the guys at the website about it if your interested! has to be a undevided manifold and devided turbo i guess! so when i get my manifold im gonna have to have it refabricated for undevided lol...wish i woulda found it sooner!

so comp cams did a regrind i take it? see but right now this is my only vehicle so i cant send in my cam i need one i can buy and thats prolly why its cheaper!

where would i get the valves, ive been looking and i didnt find much other then the standard ones!

the dis 2 will only do retard and on based on rpm
I think they have a more expensive unit that will do boost based.
hp will do advance and retard. ans you can semi base it on map
stock map reads 105kpa so a fuzz over atmosphere. this is how I did mine.
I'm looking at adding an aem fic
this will do boost fueling and timing functions

machine work on the engine for new pistons etc will take time.
if this is your only vehicle the best thing to do is get a spare engine to build.

Re: turbo build begins!!!

as for valves I'm pretty sure mine came from si valves.
they had a 1mm oversize stainless.

on the quick spool with a divided manifold wouldn't this shut down half the manifold as well?
I'm going the nitrous route since traction is a big problem below 40 mph anyway.
but at the track on slicks a quick shot will defiantly do the trick.

as for the z pak I found a place to buy and some info for ya.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ZPAK-...QQcmdZViewItem

http://www.raybestospowertrain.com/rpt_prod_f_zpak.php

have you picked a posi yet?
I'm runing a Detroit tru-trac
transfers power to the wheel with the most traction and has no clutches to wear out.

Re: turbo build begins!!!

im not a 100% how it works but the guy i talked to said it had been tested and said it works pretty good so i guess u would just have to talk to the person that i talked to..the the manifold is undevided i wouldnt think it would hurt it any where as mine that is devided when it was first being made for my dual scroll one side would be completly shut off and would do no good as only one side would be flowing in the turbo, undevided because more flow is going only into one scroll so i imagine thats how it spools up quicker! im still tryn to find more about it though! i just found out about it the other day! as for the mitsubishi i have no idea!

yea ive been thinking about just getting a dif block to do work on while i have my daily but i dunno yet!

Re: turbo build begins!!!

Hey IDK what you are doing for tunning BUT. I have a MegaSquirt 2 all built up and I am working on the wiring harness at the moment. BUT it might be a good idea for you to look into that. I am not 100% on the timing yet on my truck, but i think you can retard your timing based on boost. My whole set up should be under 400 for a standalone. not including LC-1 wideband and injectors. You can also set up the MS2 to bias the injectors based on feedback from the o2 sensor.

I hear a lot about megasquirt but from what i've seen on their site. it wasnt anything special.
what will you do for gauges?
since its a stand alone it wont drive your gauges.
I also dont remember seeing anything for controlling the auto.

The megasquirt 2 has quite a few options. You can run the 02 sensor as a direct feedback for your A/F ratio. Also the their site is kinda cryptic, you really have to dig and sign up on the forums to really see what you can do with it. There are Extra code packs plus a few extra boards you can build for launch control and stuff like that. MS2 you can also run multiple maps for a nos system, It has options to run different coil packs, I mean there are pretty much endless options... they keep adding on it.

Basically the best way to use the MS2 is to run your own wiring harness or buy one exactly the same or super similar so you can just hack it and set it up to your engine. The gauges I thought were ran separately through the mini computer in the cab. If This isn't so I would love to get a manual if anyone has one.

Auto transmissions... I have no idea really how a computer would control the shifting... I was under the impression that auto transmissions do all their shifting through pressure changes in hydraulic fluid. Are the S10s set up to shift electronically?

If you want to check out a site for MegaSquirt anything A good place would be http://www.msefi.com Main MS site
And for a seller that can also answer questions that might be easier to talk to would be http://www.DIYautotune.com

Re: turbo build begins!!!

gauges are computer driven.
hvac control are also done through the computer.
the auto is hydraulic shift but electronically controlled by the computer
you would basically need to keep the factory computer to run everything in the truck or go with manual valve body in the trans, manual hvac controls, aftermarket gauges etc.
this is why I'm looking at a piggy back

Re: turbo build begins!!!

Yeah... I didn't plan on running the MS2 fully standalone because of that issue. Where can I get a complete electrical manual on a 1999 s-10?

Re: turbo build begins!!!

awsome!! ill prob do tranny last though! i want to get the basic build first then ill work from that! speaking of i just got a email today from david and he said its all finished!! FINALLY, got to admit it took a lil longer then expected but he said he was havn some trouble since it was dual scroll setup/external wastegate and the flange they had a bit of trouble..so im really excited to see it at my front door soon!!!

another small mod that i finished today too and cleared up alot of space for my intercooler piping! replaced the clutch fan with an electric fan! i got lucky, my brothers old oldsmobile used a 16" electric fan and we are gonna junk it so i decided to look under the hood and i was like sweet dont even have to pay for one or go to junkyard so i pulled that out and put it in my truck today! i dont know what the cfms are on it but it flows really well if not better then the stock pulley fan! hooked up to a switch so i can just use it when i need to when im sitting still or idle! ill try to take a pic of it tomorrow also getting my front bumper painted yes the big white thing in my avatar...lol

Re: turbo build begins!!!

hey, slowly but surely is never a bad thing lol, it only took like a year to finally get some dyno numbers. Its coming along nicely. Do you plan on buying any other engine parts from DTS? Im pretty skeptical about his hp numbers that hes getting

haha yea ive had the idea for turboing for about 3 yrs now before everyone this year all sudden started to do theres...lol, but there are a few things i thought about like patriot head, but i just saw last night a guy selln a used 2.2 head for 65 so im gonna try to buy that and clean it up real good and do a port n polish and build on that a lil with rockers etc, i dont plan on buying anything else from david all i needed was the header! and i think u can get some parts cheaper else where!
