Re: Swapping 95-97 Cam in 98+

well if you look at a sealed power camshaft, there used to be 2 different numbers for 94-97 and 98-02 but now the cam number is cs1579 for the cam, and kc1567 for the cam kit with lifters and such.

94 and 95 cams are not notched for sequential fuel injection.

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

does this mean that a 96,97 cam in a 98+ motor is better than the cam it comes with?

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

omg, way to bring up an old post

heres the deal,
94-97 motors had a big cam with small lifters
98+ had a smaller cam with bigger lifter for "low-end tourque"

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

so... can you use the newer lifters in the older motors? or should i just crawl back into the dark and keep whittling my custom blower cam module....

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

I know this is an old thread but I still don't SEE the answer here. Are you guys putting the older cams in the 98+ trucks or putting the newer into older?

I'm trying to find a better cam for my 2000 so I'd like to know what's happening here.

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

man it is a old thread back from the dead . i don't think they are inerchangeable beacause the notches on the crank are in different places, and your timing will be off or sumthin' like that. from what i've seen and read the only thing u can do is have a regrind done on ur factory cam.

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

I still haven't seen anyone say "96-97 cam will give you power". How much power?

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

may have already been covered... but - would the 96-97 cam add more power than getting a regrind done?

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

it depends on what you had done to your stock cam

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

it wont make more power than a regrind. its basically a very small hp increase. its not worth it unless your engine was taken apart and you happened to have a 96-97 cam sitting in your lap. otherwise the cost/labor involved makes it not worth it at all.

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

its been done but I don't recall the member that did it and said it was well worth the difference. Best to do when you have motor out than to do this mod ONLY

Re: Swapping 96-97 Cam in 98+

Well my motor is completely apart and a stock GM cam for the 96-97 is easy to come by so I may be going ahead and ordering one.

Thanks for clearing this up for me guys.
