Spark plug install

Hi, I went to autozone and got some NGK platinum spark plugs for my 01 S10. It's got 192K on it and the plugs haven't been replaced for a while now..Do I gap them at .040 or no? And what's the easiest way to take out the old plugs? I was maybe thyinking take off the air box that says 2200 or take off the belt and A/C compressor?

Any help is appreciated.
Thanks, Nathan

Re: Spark plug install

I have no idea what happened but my SES light was on. I opened up the hood and one of the boot things was lose. Put it back on and now the SES light is still on??? What happened? I undid the positive on the battery for a min but it's still on? It's still running PERFECTLY so idk if it's just being dumb or if something is really messed up.

I just unplugged the positive part of the battery for 10 minutes and started it now the SES light is off! Runs better. Now I just need to replace the fuel filter and i'll be good to go.

^I'm not sure but they were $3.99 each. Or maybe $2.99 but i'm pretty sure it was $3.99. My dad uses NGK plugs in his cobra so we know they are good.

Re: Spark plug install

NGK is a good brand but like anything their not universal.

At work I sell plugs by OEM application.

GM vehicles - AC Delco
Ford - Motorcraft
Nissan - NGK
VW, Audi, Mercedes (any european) - Bosch
Dodge, Chrysler - Champion
Toyota - I send them to Autozone for Denso. I don't know why my company doesn't carry them.
Autolite - for cheap people or older cars that we can't figure out what they used originally. Their not a bad brand but their not universal.

Using OEM type plugs helps maintain OEM type gas mileage. Unless you add a turbo or supercharger, OEM plugs and ignition systems will work great.

The NGK's shouldn't give you any problems. If something does get screwy, ACDelco platinums will be your best bet.

After owning quite a few cars, and doing more tune-ups than I can remember, OEM plugs are the WTG, though I just tossed a set of Champions in mine. I figured they had to be better than the old eraser heads that were knocking round in there. And hey! I can get n the highway now!!!!:yay:

Re: Spark plug install

IMO Champion plugs are ONLY good for Poulan products, in everything else I regard them as trash/paperweights. I'm an NGK and Denso guy. best plugs on the market for use in 99% of vehicles. I run em in my bike, will be in my truck, and PROBABLY the samurai I'm lookin at.

Re: Spark plug install

How did the old plugs look once you pull them out?

Just curious, I let mine go way over they didn't look too good.

Re: Spark plug install

They were mostly black at the bottom part by the threads (pretty gross). I HIGHLY recommend getting compressed air and blow down where the plugs are to get out all the dirt before you do anything. You don't want anything falling down into the engine.

Also when you are routing the new plug wires through the engine bay, I twisted some metal wire around the rubber part that goes onto the cap so I can feed the metal wire down to someone then they can pull the wire down to get the actual rubber wire. Makes it SO much easier.

Re: Spark plug install

Changing the wires for the first time on it were tricky but once you figure it out it can be really easy.

did you have to remove any parts on the intake when you were doing the wires?

I have been running the G-Power NGK's for about 10 000 km with no problems and at first I noticed it started up easier. Also noticed a small increase in fuel economy. Would recommend these NGK G-Power's too anyone!

Yes I had to take off the big box that says 2200 SFI on it. When you are taking it off make sure you unplug the thing on the back it's easy to miss.

Re: Spark plug install

I agree wit AC Delco plugs and wires.

However, MSD(8.5, not 10.2) and Taylor wires are good as well. I've used both and it was as good as Delco, just nicer looking and a bit bigger.
