Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

Hey everyone! I have a question. My truck just hit 90k and about 150 miles before I changed my oil, I threw a little SeaFoam in the crankcase. Immediately after changing my oil, I developed a knock at idle and at light acceleration (~2000-2500RPMs). Could the SeaFoam have possibly washed out my bearings and caused my motor to end up in a horrible sad state, or could it have possibly loosened up some carbon and sludge inside that just needs to be "worked out?" Ever since I developed the knock, I stopped using my S-10 as my daily. I drive it once a week to work which is a 12 mile drive each way. Tonight when I got home, the knocking stopped. I am totally confused. Does anyone have any insight? My 2.2 has always had her oil changed at ~3000 by both myself and her previous owner. I'm totally confused!

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

lets think logically...since sea foam is apparently a god around here

yes....sea foam cleans....but wait....where does all the crap go?? it just doesn't magically leave the engine...most of the time it will sit in the bottom of the oil pan....but yes...it can wash out bearings and the oil pump can def suck some of that crap up and clog it

i have seen a few engines ruined b/c of the stuff.....altho i have used it to clean injectors or anything that will allow the stuff to be burned and pushed ouf of the engine....you wont catch me putting it in the crankcase....sure people do it all the time....but...its not a cure all in a can...it can ruin things

if your engine knocks or ticks...the only REAL way to fix it is to replace the problem

EDIT: ok that came off kinda harsh....wasn't meaning to be...just trying to put a point across..lol

heck i just did it to my truck for the 3rd time in the crankcase at 142k miles.

i dump it in then drive it around (like 20 miles) then come back, pull up on the ramps and then change the oil while its hot so whatever was broken loose didnt have time to stick or settle to the bottom of the pan.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

its not meant as an additive.......... your supposed to pour it in,,,run it ,,, then drain it,,

its not meant to be left in the engine

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

I put 1/3 of the bottle, ran the truck for ~150 miles and then changed the oil. The knock started right after I changed the oil. I don't get it. I always made sure the oil was changed at 3000. Oh well. Update. The knocking started again so I'm at a loss. It sounds like someone shaking marbles in a glass half full of water. It's hard to describe. It honestly doesn't sound like rod knock or a bearing noise, but I don't know what else to think. I know if I take it to a mechanic they're going to try to put one in my pooper.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

I think 150 miles was a little too long to have it in there. From what I've read somewhere on here it breaks the oil down quick..

i wouldn't put seafoam in the crankcase just for that reason, i've run it in the brake booster and gas tank, but i'm a little weary of pouring it in my oil

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

You ran it too long, that's most likely what caused the problem. Get someone with a trained ear (someone you trust) to listen to it and go from there

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

Also I have seen it make lifters stick...causing them to tap loud. When you added the Seafoam for 150miles you can break down the oil enough to cause issues with hydraulic lifters. If they free themself the tap/knock will stop. So it could be minimal...but never the less...I would get someone trained to look at it. I have used Seafoam in dozens of vehicles, but i never run it linger than about 40 miles in the crankcase. Then change as soon as I stop.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

i had this same issue. i was told by my mechanic to run the seafoam in my oil for 500 kilometers. i just had to get my crankshaft reground and get new bearings. had to go 30/60 on my rods/mains. im wondering if this was the issue

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

I am not a fan of using anything in the crankcase other than oil. I have seen stuff like seafoam wash the cylinder walls after someone left it in for a week instead of draining the oil after 5 min like your supposed to. The end result was that he lost compression in not one but two cylinders. So yes it will clean, but use it responsibly.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

Too long imo, I never had it over 50miles(3days)

Is this knocking coming from TOP of motor or BOTTOM of motor, it makes a difference

Other than that, have good mechanic to inspect for you if you cannot figure out

Definitely coming from the bottom of the motor. I just find it odd that it will be there one day and will disappear the next. It happens between 2000 and 2500 RPM's. I'm taking it in to a mechanic this week. If I get bad news, I'll just add Lucas and drive the car until it explodes.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

IMO the fact that it doesn't do it in neutral means nothing. Problems are typically more obvious when there is a load on the engine.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

I know aton of the lt1/ls1 guys run it .. an in fact for the amount of time you left it in , it could have gotten into a lifter a collapsed a lifter by breaking down the oil . I wouldnt think it to be a rod knock with it comming a going . I would say more like piston slap from cylinder wash .That would explain the comming an going of the noise to ..

Thats just my .02

load or no load, the engine still can make problem with or without neutral

have someone go under the truck and check the noise specifically whether more toward engine or tranny/exhaust

Is it sad that sometimes I turn the radio up loud because I'm afraid if I turn it down, I'll hear something bad?

probably thinking do it again, I need the extra money
my advise is never put any "cleaners" in a crankcase. that includes that motor flush garbage.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

in the future drain a quart of oil (before changing it) and add a quart of ATF fluid into your crankcase. Run the engine for 15-20 min and shut off, change the oil. It will do the cleaning and a lot more safely. I have done this in my mustang and sho for years, I learned it while working at Jiffy Lube back in the day.

Almost 2 years old thread, way to go!

Once again, you need to understand that oil pumps through fast, it really isn't needed to be in engine long. 5 minute of it idling is good enough, dump it completely and do another oil change.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

I put the seafoam in thru the vacuum line that goes to the break booster, the next day it started knocking. I changed the oil and it still continues to do it. It only happens when the motor winds up right before i shift, its def not a rod, Im thinking it might be a lifter with sum crud on it making it not seal........

any advice?

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

It's not a silver bullet.. but I know first hand it solves some problems. I failed an emissions test, found out about seafoam on here, ran some through a vaccum line, enjoyed the smoke display, went back 2 days later to the same garage for a second etest, and passed with flying colours. I failed on Nitrous Oxides--seafoam drastically lowered my NOx score. I don't recall it doing much for the other gasses, but those wern't out of line to begin with.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

I don't understand what is going on....I pulled out two of the spark plugs and changed them and they needed it badly. I couldn't get the other two out, gunna have to wait to get to my gradpa's shop since i don't wanna strip the threads out of the head and not be able to re-thread them. It only knocks when the motor winds up right before the shift and when its between 2200 to 2700 rpm, usually when i give it a lil bit of gas it goes away. I have no clue what is going on.....

Any advice anyone?

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

your rod bearing is spun my friend.
mine didn't knock until I revved the engine up. (it didn't do it at idle)

http://www.youtube.com/user/blue03r6#p/u/7/1NPAWF420UQ

don't keep driving it. if you buy a rebuilt engine the core for your old one is about $500. you won't get it back if you put the rod through the block.

Re: Seafoam Ruined My Engine??

it says it's 100%petroleum product, safe in crankcase, doesn't have a time factor.i had a sticky lifter put it in a few months ago in synthetic and so far no problem.the advertised rate to add is 1 1/2 oz per quart.
