Right scan for the 95 2.2

The newer scan tool reads error, I am told we've got newer type test plugs on and older software version.

Can anyone explain the details?

If you're talkin about the one under the steering wheel you need OBD I for 96 and older and OBD II for 97 and newer. There are several diagnostic machines and I'm guessing this is what tou are talkin about

I'm led to believe it's obd1 software with obd2 plug in for the scan tool. I'm told that 95's are special that way.

Can anyone confirm that?

I have a 95 as well and you need a scanner that will read an obd 1 but uses an obd 2 plug. i know matco carries one that will read it.

Re: Right scan for the 95 2.2

Hey thanks, I'll look into the Matco deal.

In the meantime, I did find out I can jump pins 5 & 6 in the connector and read the codes on the "check engine soon" lite. Tried it, and it worked!

But all I got was the code 12, which is the start and end sequence code.
No fault codes, so I'm on my own.

Thanks for reading , guys.

Re: Right scan for the 95 2.2

So anyways, the reason I took off on this journey, we've got a drivability problem.

If you put more than light throttle on it during acceleration, it will fall on it's face. That's as if not enough fuel is added for the air you're giving it thru throttle position.

No codes stored, so I did a meter check on TPS, it showed bad. Replaced TPS. Test drove, problem still there. Checked MAP sensor, it checked same as full throttle with key on/ engine off. So replaced that, too. Test drove, problem still there.

Next checked coils and coil connections. Coils metered out OK. Pulled plugs and set them at .050" to get a little stronger spark if the air's blowing the spark out if it's weak. Test drove, problem still there.

Took the ground cable off the battery for 15 minutes, and made a ground wire to attach from the body to the engine, hooked the battery back up, test drove, and ....problem got worse! Took that ground wire off, test drove, and it's back the way it was....

Pullin' out what little hair I got left, anybody got any ideas??

Re: Right scan for the 95 2.2

I know the feeling of pulling your hair out... i am chasing the same issue. I have changed my MAP and TPS and still have issues. Have also metered all other sensors and still getting same problem. I have been told i can still have bad coil packs even if they meter correct. I think this might be my next try though. Let me know if you have any luck plz.
