ok, its a 2002 2.2L about 136,000 miles on motor, just did a head gasket job about 8,000 miles ago, truck is still running great, real smooth, all the gauges look good although the oil pressure is at 20 psi when its just sitting. problem is today a sound just started coming from what seems to be the front of motor, you know how these 2.2L motors have that lil diesel sound to them, the tick or what ever it is... that sound multiplied by 3 to 4 times it sound... any hell on trouble shooting would be awesome or what you might think the problem is tell me pls. thanks in advance!
if its a loud ticking most likely the timing chain tensioner has either broke, or loosened excessively. basically the chain is slapping around making the noise.
o yeah, i learned a long time ago to ONLY use OEM parts and or new parts... thanks for the advice on the timing chain, guess ill tear it apart and check it out.
I'm having the same issue however off a cold start there's no sound and once the engine heats up after about 15 minutes of driving then it becomes extremely audible.
same here rallyup... anyone you 2.2L fanatics have anymore clues or anything on this issue? id really hate to dig into the timing chain if thats not the problem... lol
the reason why i think it could be something else is bc its running great just loud as hell... is it possible for timing chain problem and motor still run good? if so, could you pls explain how?, thanks
The tensioner wears quickly, allowing slop in the chain. The slop in the chain creates the ticking noise. The truck will still run fine but you should replace the timing set with GM parts to avoid failure and possible engine damage. Mine does the same thing, cause of a napa timing set. Will be replacing with GM parts when I pull the motor back out in a few months.
thanks man, im just making sure before i rip this thing apart and waste all my new oil i just put in 1000 miles ago.. lol and my 96 has 275,000 miles and the timing chain has never been touched, i thought timing chains usually didnt mess up... thanks to all for feedback!
You did a head gasket job. Did you have coolant in your oil ? Would that cause a timing chain to go bad sooner ? Where can I get a genuine GM timing set & tensioner on the net, for cheep ?
this is a long shot from the amount of noise your hearing but since it was a fix for me ill tell you... this loud rattle was coming from a loose bolt that holds the alternator i believe but its in the timing cover area closest to the Alt.
maybe our motors are differnt, mine is in a 2002 but you should only have to unhook fuel line near the fuel rail, ill post a pic of the connection that you need special tool for... i didnt have to unhook fuel rail from intake either... i donot know about the EGR, youll have to start a new tread on that one. i did have oil in my radiator thats how i knew i blew the head gasket which is normal for these 2.2L GM stamped out millions of bad gaskets... and my timing set, if you have time to wait the cheapest iv found was gmpartsdirect.com you can get gears, chain, tensioner, gasket, and seal for around 135$ all OEM parts only!! me i needed my parts fast so i went to gmpartscenter.net and got 2 day shipping for 187$ for everything...
no problem man, thats why im confused wondering what your talking about return fuel line... lol one more thing, iv read on here that the oil orifice behind the camshaft gear needs to replaced as well when doing timing job...
yes its a small hole in a freeze plug and iv heard not to drill it, just replace it, again this is something that requires another thread, im just cleaning out the shit behind the old one and replacing it with new one... lol
if the belt tensioner is built into the timing cover than remove the center bolt, it wont fly apart on you, than there is one more timing cover screw behind the tensioner... if its not built in the cover then 3 bolts hold it on under alternator. i use 2-12" fans a bout at a local store and a 40amp relay switch, dont know what brand, there is a tread on how to: on here somewhere... and i have a 200amp alternator, two "massive" 4 farad capacitors, two "1800 watt amps, truthfully dont know the name brand bc they are painted black but these amps are sick!! and four old school 12" kicker solo baric round speakers... and a custom box, its all about how you wire them up and set them up, mine are allll the way in the back of truck so my how shell is like a bass cannon. i dont have profile for my truck, im new ill make one with more pics one of these days...
How many times did you have to change the oil before all the coolant was out ?
We just finished my head gasket job. Started up, Check engine light was on, forgot to hook up the O2. Smokey motor, oil and cleaner burning off. No more bubbles in the coolant overflow tank. New oil looks milky ?
i changed the oil while doing the head job, then after i was done with the head i flushed the system... that was it for me... i have no clue why your new oil should be milky... you got your head checked and leveled im assuming?
WooHoo !
Dumped it and put in some used oil, same filter and it stayed clean. No smoke or water vapor from exhaust. Drove to DMV and tagged it. Got back home; put in new oil & filter, plugs & wires, new battery. I got a running S10 !
Matt, I appreciate your help with this.
