more E-fan how to....and pics...

first off, the Taurus fan FTW! this is the second electric fan i've had on my truck. the first was a generic 16" (probally a hayaden from autozone). it gave me a lot of trouble because it didnt flow enough CFM's to handle the A/C.

on top of that, my first fan wiring was ugly and stuck out like a sore thumb and i wanted a cleaner look to it.

here's the old setup:

^ notice that you can barley get to the thermostat to adj it...dumb on my part

and now for the new: (pics are kinda blurry and crappy, nighttime pics)

^notice the Taurus fan and shroud completely cover the radiator

^ i moved the T-stat to over by the intake box, much easier to adj and doesnt' stick out too much

^ the cleaned up wiring. when the cover is on, you can't see any of the wiring.

^ homemade upper radiator support. just took a thin piece of sheetmetal and bent it to fit.

the wiring is setup like this:

* the 12V + for the relay/fan is coming from the lead to the fuse relay box (which is on a 50A fuse)

* the ign source for the 30A relay is coming from the oxg sensor fuse spot (20A). (using a neat little fuse doubler piece i picked up from the store)

* the relay is grounded to the fender on the same bolt it's mounted to.

* the fan is grounded to the rad support using an existing ground under the airbox

* the thermostat is wired into the ign source wire before the relay. i did this because i was worried about the T-stat holding up to the Taurus fan's amps.

all the wiring is wrapped in electrical tape and is virtually unnoticeable.

i didn't bother hooking up the high sp of the fan up, the fan has been working more than well enough without it even in this Ga 100 degree weather.

i hope this helps some of yall out, feel free to comment and ask questions.

-Jonathan

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

looks good. The Taurus fan works like a charm. Thats what I had on my 02 and it never gave me trouble. I live in NE Texas, worked good A/C or not

AWESOME!!! THANKS!! Did you notice any extra power from eliminating the fan when you first did this mod?

i grabbed this one from a guy but i believe it's off a '90-'95 3.8 Taurus.

the hp and tq gain is noticable, the motor revs a lil quicker, but the biggest improvement for me was the MPG. i've gone from like 21.5 to 23 mpg now.

the one drawback to wiring the fan like this is that the A/C doesn't blow cold till the fan comes on or till you are up to speed going down the road. but man once it comes on...it'll freeze your butt off. lol

i don't know but i would guess it's less than 30A.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

people dont understand you wont GAIN power from doing this, but you DO take less strain off the motr, it doesnt have to turn the fan anymore, which makes throttle response and gas mileage better

i read 32 amps at intial start up that's why you need at least a 40 amp fuse. total load should be 80% of fuse capacity.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

So what parts do you need for this swap? Just the fan?

And does the fan just swap on? Or do you need to do some mods?

Thanks.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

youll need a fan from an early 90's taurus...and a fan controller...take off your fan clutch and take off the bottom fan shroud, and most people just trim the top shroud...it fits in there really well...

first you need to remove the stock clutch fan, which is a pain in the rear.

then you need to buy:
1. fan
2. wires and connectors (i'd go w/ a 10-12gauge wire)
3. electrical tape
4. 30A relay

5. adj thermostat kit ($20)

6. a pair of wire strippers/crimper
7. a set of pull through radiator ties to hold the fan to the rad ($7)
8. a fuse tap

i believe all of this is available at any autozone, etc.

but don't just use my setup to go by, there are much better ways to do the setup. i believe there is another hayden adj thermostat for $36 that has an A/C input so the fan comes on w/ the A/C is on.

looks like i might need to step up to a 40A relay.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

Please don't run the a/c unless the fan is going. I had my a/c on while just testing my e-fan while parked and apparently not enough air was getting through. I heard a hiss and lost all my freon though one of the service ports, it could have been worse.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

Ok thanks for the help. Wiring will be no problem for me since thats what im experienced at. I guess ill start collecting the parts for it. I still have pulleys to install, so ill just end up doing this all in one shot.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

take a vom to the condensor(i think, im too tired (the big ass metallic cylinder on the rear passenger side of the engine) and find the power, run a jumper (neatly, in wire loom, and in red for power) to the on switch of the aftermarket thermostatic switch and all is all good...

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

The ac not blowing cold is a easy fix with a second relay, just for the ac so it kicks on with the compressor.

dang, that thing has ALOT of amps!

i have 3 fans on my truck. two 12" fans, and one 16" fan. they pull a total of 23amps max. which is pretty good! total 4500cfm.

less strain=more power. if your spinning a fan reguardless if the fan clutch is engauge it is taking away power from the motor. this mod will improve power and fuel economy. dont expect big gains from this mod, it will be small.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

just to give an update. ever since i have done this mod the needle on the gauge hasn't gone past 180 degrees. (i have a 180 tstat).

i got over 25.5 mpg the other weekend (all interstate driving), thats teh best i've ever gotten. (mines an auto btw) it usually averages around 24mpg mixed driving.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

old thread...but is there a better fuse to tap into besides the oxy sensor? I was poking around with a multimeter and a lot of empty fuse spots are with ignition, but there are no prongs to let the mini fuse doublers to stick in there. I just don't want to risk anything to do with the oxygen sensor

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

yea i know what you mean...i used to have a 95 also, and i think the only fuses were on the side of the dash. I'm just looking for something under the hood to tap into that isn't important just if something were to go wrong.

Re: more E-fan how to....and pics...

The fuse/relay box has an aux power stud on the side that is fused with a 30a fuse. (don't hook the power wire to it btw...but thats a differnet story). The main power i have for the fan has a 50a fuse wired to it in the fuse/relay box.

I don't see where tapping into the oxg sensor would be a problem. you are using it just to get a signal to send to the thermostat. and even if it did, it would just throw up an O2 sensor SES light.

This setup hasn't had any major problems since this post. I had a bad ground that would kill the voltage in the truck when the fan kicked in, fixed it. and i took a bar of aluminum stock and built a better bracket for the fan. the pull through ties didn't work well enough for my taste.

The main thing i loved is the throttle response when you have your ac on. Normally its like driving a turtle with a gimp leg with the ac on.

no, experience not necessary but it wouldn't be a bad thing lol
http://4x4icon.com/offroad/headlight...ay_diagram.gif
86 = low amp circuit to tell the switch to turn
85 = ground
30 = ground
87 = power
> interchangeable depending on your auxillary power
87a = ground

thats basically whats goin on,
u need to put your fan on either 87 87a or 30 depending on how you set up your power and ground...its pretty simple if u just look at it
