Mileage per tank
Hey guys i just picked up a 1996 s10 reg cab with 48k on it. the truck is mint. its a 5-speed with 2.2l and i have noticed that a mix of city and highway only gets me like 310 miles per tank full. everything on this truck has been done already plugs, wires, air and fuel filters. what are you guys getting any anything that will net better gas mileage

Re: Mileage per tank
be happy you get that, i have an automatic ext cab and i get about 230~ miles to a tank with mostly city driving, thats from full to low fuel light, witch is normally 14 gallons used so 16.5 mpg roughly
manuals get better mileage ofc, only things you can do really to try and improve your mileage more is under drive pullys, efan mod and make sure your tires are full of air and all your bearings etc and greased up properly etc. |

Re: Mileage per tank
I can get 400 out of a 16 gal tank. I'm getting 24 city only and 26 city-hwy 50-50 driving and I drive agressively... Lol 70 plus on the hwy
03 2.2 5spd pullies, efan, CAI helps 235X16 tires suck 1-2 mpg on mine |

Re: Mileage per tank
replace your air filter with a K&N, keep up with the small things like tire pressure as said before. switching over to synthetic fluids will help a little bit too. i've never gone down to the low fuel light from a full tank but i've gotten close to empty with around 280 miles on one tank.

Re: Mileage per tank
Its considered a 19 gallon tank but ive never gotten more then 16 gallons in mine. My tank at empty is about 15 and a half gallons. But ive got a 98 ext cab auto 2.2 and get about 22 to 23 on average and about 27 on highway.

Re: Mileage per tank
i usually get a 300-320 to a tank, due to the fact i have removed some factory stuff that it once had, such as egr, and the cat.

idk in my auto ext cab i've never got much more that a little over 15 gallons into it and the low fuel light comes on at 14 gal from full for sure so i'd wager that its only a 16 gal tank

Re: Mileage per tank
i was saying i get 310-320 or whatever due to the fact i removed the cat and egr.. meaning it used to do better and it could do a lot better with that stuff back on, but im not putting it back on as i am getting my computer tuned to remove it all. |

Re: Mileage per tank
I think that 500kms (about 310 miles) to a tank is the best I've ever gotten out of my truck, all highway. I'd love to get that regularly.
Hmm, but I can only fit about 14 gallons. |

Re: Mileage per tank
autos are worse for mileage compared to a conservatively driven 5 spd, and also autos have 4.10 gears which also hurts the mileage compared to a reg cab 5 spd with 3.73 gears

Re: Mileage per tank
I have put 16 gallons before in mine and the gas light wasn't even on. I get about 330 miles per tank usually using 15 gallons all city driving. It is a 5 speed, I don't think that the 5 speeds received a special tank. I'll keep my eye out for this next time to see exactly how much she takes on from a low fuel light status. On long trips I get about 400 miles per tank.

I can go about 500 Km or 312 miles before it is on the E. Although I have only run it to the gas light once.

Re: Mileage per tank
the 4 bangers have smaller tanks, dont know why but they do,i had an '89 with the 2.5 and a 5 speed with a 14 gallon gas tank,i have a '96 with the 4.3 and an auto and have a 19 gallon gas tank,i just bought an '03 with the 2.2 and auto and put 10 gallons in it when it was almost empty and got more than 3/4 tank,i just guess the smaller the engine the smaller the gas tank according to GM

Re: Mileage per tank
yea i dont know what decided who got what tank (may have been random whatever tank was lined up with that frame on the assembly line.) theres what they call a 16 gal tank and a 20 gal tank. on mine since i got the optimal MPG configuration i can get 300 miles to half a tank and about 500 or so to a full tank.(near full usually 3 gallons or so left) i dont like runnin it low because the gas is the coolant for the fuel pump, pump gets hot burns up $300 part i dont feel like fixin ![]() |

Re: Mileage per tank
Should be 18.5 gal tank.
You should be getting at least 325-340 on stock then with mods you'll easily go over 400, I get at least 550 a tank. Me and few other members with mods gotten low 40s on highway For 48k you should be getting more mpg, but make sure spark plugs and plug wires are AC Delco(spark and plug), MSD(plugs) or Taylor(plugs). Coils should be AC Delco or MSD, most are havng bad luck with Accel. ASP Pullies, efan are recommended. Might as well do oil change, trans flush, axle flush, coolant flush(Prestone, not Dexcool). eBay intake are ok, looks better, makes easier for remove/install when in way compare to stock intake setup, best to get known intake filter brand than no name/off brand. Replace fuel filter(AC Delco). Now when you order stuff, you can go thru jegs/summit with same brand you find if its not ac delco or what I list above then can order them and get discounts. Make sure you have even air pressure in tires and check it now and then. That's about it for low budget cost of tune up and upgrades. Welcome to forum and if you have any questions, research and search then ask if answers aren't what you need, make new thread and ask away. |

Re: Mileage per tank
I think my gas guage is messed up cuz it will go down real fast when i'm driving then it won't move for a while then it will move fast again and then stop at one spot again (and repeat). It's really weird but my 01 reg cab 5spd will start to get close to the first orange mark at about 250mi. But now I have brand new plugs and wires so I should be getting better mileage. (was only getting 18mpg)

Re: Mileage per tank
Different years and different models have different tanks, miles per tank isn't miles per gallon, my 94 had a bigger tank than my 03 does and could go farther - over 400 but got worse mpg than my current.

Re: Mileage per tank
This topic has been covered several times. Mileage per tank doesn't mean shit, since different years had different size tanks and some people push the tank further than others. I second Mechnix, my 94 has a 20 gallon, realistically 19.

Re: Mileage per tank
Correct.
MPG is best to use, although 2.2L have similiar/same gas tank. As for fuel gauge giving weird reading, that's your fuel sending unit sensor, replace it or ignore it and fill up within 150-200miles. |

Re: Mileage per tank
I usually let mine go to around 280 miles before I fill up and when I go to fill up I can get about 11.5 gallons in...pushed mine too far when I had my other inline fuel pump and ran out of gas and burnt it up so I don't push it past there anymore. I get about 22-23 mpg(all city) semi conservative driving.

Re: Mileage per tank
Once again, I think it is absolutely crazy to think these 2.2s are even close to being able to get low 40s on the hwy...and if you think that you personally have gotten that, its time for a 'new calculator mod'. A cavy with the same motor and a stick isn't near that and they have lower weight, better aero, less rolling resistance etc and probably better gearing...literally everything on them is better for economy. I honestly think some of you guys need to apply and show your magic at an upcoming engineering seminar or auto industry trade show...you would be rich in no time because the billion dollar auto companies can't do what you are doing.

Re: Mileage per tank
I'm either getting really bad gas mileage or my sending unit is going out because I only have 1/4 tank of gas left according to the guage and i've only gone 180 miles.
It's a 01 reg. cab 5spd 2.2..Not sure the tank size but shouldn't I be going farther than 180mi with 1/4 tank left?? |

Re: Mileage per tank
^Yeah I know..I think my sending unit is going bad because it was a little under 1/4 tank at 180mi now it's at exactly 1/4 tank at 200mi. It's got 190,000 miles on it soo.
